Bright cassis and graphite notes as well as spicy wood, dried herbs, and tobacco all emerge from the 2023 Château Cheval Blanc Le Petit Cheval, the second wine of this reference point estate that was pulled from healthy yields of 39 hectoliters per hectare. Based on equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc from the more sandy parcels and aged 16 months in once-used barrels, it's a juicy, gorgeous wine in its own right. I love its complex, supple, elegant style, and it's medium-bodied, has ripe tannins, and a great finish. There are roughly 1,300 cases produced, and it hit 13.5% natural alcohol with a pH of 3.77. Drink 2027-2038.

The 2023 Le Petit Cheval represents 10% of the estate's production. It's a blend taken from four parcels with a bit more sand than what is commonly found at the property. Floral top notes, red-toned fruit, blood orange, mint, spice and cedar lend notable aromatic intensity. Pliant and expansive on the palate, the Petit Cheval is superb in 2023.

The 2023 Le Petit Cheval represents 10% of total production this vintage. It has a fragrant bouquet that is very pure, black cherries and wild strawberry, hints of cassis with peony and violet scents that percolate through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine sapidity, quite assertive in terms of grip toward the finish with a touch of brine on the aftertaste. An upstanding Petit Cheval.

The crunchy second wine of Cheval Blanc with a good tannin backbone. Aromas of red currants, blackberries, cedar and hints of pepper and paprika. Medium-bodied with chewy tannins and a spicy finish. Firm and racy. 50% merlot and 50% cabernet franc. Needs three or four years to come together. Try after 2028.

5 Parzellen sind dem Petit-Cheval gewidmet; 3 mit Merlot und 2 mit Francs. Die Reifung erfolgt zu 100% in Barriques zweiter Belegung. "Das Jahr war großzügig für Cheval-Blanc", erklärt Nicolas Corporandy, der Kulturchef des Weinguts. "Wir hatten eine sehr gruppierte Blüte, ebenso wie die Véraison und am Ende einen Ertrag von mehr als 40hl/ha". Das Bouquet zeigt viel Frische bzw. Nuancen von Eukalyptus, Pfingstrosen und Süßholz. Die seidige Textur unterstreicht die Eleganz des Weins. Seine Tannine sind bestens eingebunden und bieten ein zuverlässiges Fundament mit Kraft, aber vor allem viel Harmonie, die sich übrigens wie ein roter Faden durch den Wein zieht. Ein schlanker und frischer Wein.

Brought up all in once-used barrels, the 2023 Château Cheval Blanc Le Petit Cheval is based on equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It offers loads of Cabernet character in its deeper currants, tobacco, darker chocolate, and leafy herb-like aromatics, with a kiss of background violet and floral nuances. It's no lightweight and has plenty of structure, medium body, ultra-fine tannins, and a gorgeous finish. It's a singular, unique expression from this terroir that will benefit from 5-6 years, if not more, of bottle age.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Le Petit Cheval storms out of the glass with powerful earthy/savory notes of tar, tapenade, and underbrush giving way to a core of ripe black plums, boysenberries, and iris bulb with a fragrant touch of dried Provence herbs. The medium-bodied palate is satin-soft and refreshing, with a well-sustained mid-palate of savory flavors, finishing with a cheeky red berry lift. The blend is 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc, aged in 1-year barrels with no new oak. Le Petit Cheval accounts for 10% of production.

Petit Cheval (Saint Émilion; 50% Merlot (from 3 plots); 50% Cabernet Franc (from 2 plots); this is a true second vine, with every one of the 56 plots ‘interviewed’ blind, in effect, for its potential part in the grand vin; Pierre-Olivier’s aim is to bring the vineyard into the bottle and make it representative of Cheval Blanc itself as a vineyard; of the 56 plots, 9 are currently being replanted with 41 plots of the 47 used for the grand vin, only one was unused in either; tasted at Cheval Blanc with Pierre-Olivier Clouet). So much cedar. I love it. Dark and intense and voluptuous unlike any other second wine of the vintage. Violets and a concentrated parfumier’s essence of violet. Sumptuous, succulent, juicy, radiant. This really could be Cheval Blanc, so expressive of the identity of the property is it. Juicy, intensely salivating and hyper-fresh with the acidity brilliantly distributed and integrated. Wow. Incredibly refreshing, with a little mint and aniseed on the finish.

Cherry blossoms, chocolate, plums, black cherries, and flowers create the aromatics. Medium-bodied, silky, elegant, and fresh, with a voluptuous texture that sets the table for the chocolate-covered black cherries, plums, and truffles. The wine is perfectly balanced between its freshness, and its opulent, nature. There was a time when second wines were simply second wines. Clearly, that is no longer the case. You can enjoy this on release and for the following 2 decades after that. The wine blends 50% Cabernet Franc, with 50% Merlot. Drink from 2027-2042. 93-95 Pts.

The 2023 Le Petit Cheval represents 10% of the estate's production and is a blend of equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc. In a way, that results in a Petit Cheval that is very Cheval, meaning very expressive in the bouquet but less giving on the palate. Crushed red berry fruit, cinnamon, star anise, pomegranate and blood orange lend an exotic flair. Bright acids and persistent tannins appear on the finish to give the wine shape, closing with a burst of energy. Superb.

The 2023 Le Petit Cheval, which sees no new oak, offers blackberry and raspberry fruit on the nose, with hints of fireside hearth and light Earl Grey aromas, all finely delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with expressive Cabernet Franc that imparts subtle bell pepper notes in the background. Cohesive, silky-smooth and moderate in length, this is an attractive Le Petit Cheval that will give a decade's drinking pleasure.

There are only 15,000 bottles of the 2023 Le Petit Cheval, a blend of equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc that didn't have quite the plenitude of the grand vin. Offering up an attractive bouquet of minty berries, cherries, plums and petals, it's medium-bodied, pillowy and vibrant, with polished tannins and a bright core of fruit. I suspect that a bit of patience will be rewarded by more fat and texture.

There’s depth of fruit, good structure and freshness in this black-cherry and chocolate-scented wine. It’s full-bodied, yet it tightens up on the finish. Toned, muscular and crisp. 10% of the production of Cheval. 50% merlot and 50% cabernet franc.
