Medium red. Musky aromas of currant, licorice, mocha and nutty oak. Sweet, broad and pliant for the vintage, with accessible fla vors of currant, smoke and tobacco. Finishes with seamless, silky tannins and lingering sweetness. Not especially complex but offers a nice combination of size and precision.

Bright red-ruby. Cassis, blackberry, licorice and violet on the nose, with a minty treble tone. Smooth, sweet and juicy, with modest depth of flavor. Finishes with dusty tannins.

Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, jugendliche Reflexe, violetter Rand. In der Nase zart blättrig, zarte rotbeerig-weichselige Frucht, eher vegetal. Am Gaumen etwas spröde Tannine, schlanke Struktur, etwas austrocknend, zarte Kirschenfrucht, etwas weitmaschig, mittlere Länge, zart adstringent.

This has a little dryness on the nose, more savoury than usual, a touch of sous-bois and damp moss. Moderate definition. Good entry on the full-bodied palate, wellbalanced, some dense black fruits that seem more merlot than cabernet franc but there is some dryness on the finish. Hopefully barrel ageing will round this out. Tasted April 2008.

70% Cabernet Franc, 30% Merlot. ‘Our Cabernet Franc was very even compared with Merlot,’ according to Kees van Leeuwen at Cheval. Lots of Cabernet aromas and even a little wild and furry. Big and supple and juicy. Spicy. SO different from the St-Émilion norm! pH 3.9 but no shortage of acidity. They picked Merlot in the last week of Sep and Cabernet Franc first week of Oct. (Late for them.) Lovely and charming and really superior. Very ‘feminine’.

Capsicum, hebaceous, Sichuan dried chilli, red chilli. The tannins are smooth, fresh and elegant. Much like the fruit. (This is the second wine of Chateau Cheval Blanc).

Clean and fruity, with mineral and light plum aromas and flavors. Medium-to-light body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. —J.S.
