Peter Michael - Les Pavots - Sonoma County 2020

In 1982, Sir Peter Michael and Lady Michael purchased 630 acres of volcanic ridges on the western face of Mount St. Helena in Knights Valley. Following Sir Peter’s '100 by 100' vision, 100% family ownership for at least 100 years and drawing inspiration from the great wineries of Burgundy and Bordeaux, the family hired like-minded viticulturists and winemakers to help them create terroir-driven wines that would stand the test of time. Today, with the support of his son, Paul and his wife, the Peter Michael winery still adheres to its original founding principles of mountain vineyards, classical winemaking, and limited production.

Grown on the slopes of Mount Saint Helena in Knights Valley, the distinctive aromas and flavors of their blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot display their hillside origins. Rocky, rhyolitic soils created through volcanic activity millennia ago contribute a mineral richness and add to the wine’s complexity. Spanning 46 acres, the red Les Pavots blocks ascend to an elevation of nearly 1,400 feet. Merlot and Cabernet Franc grow on the cool upper slopes, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot below.

Weather conditions

2020 saw the first February with no rainfall in recorded history. The rains eventually arrived, with some particularly late storms into May and even the very beginning of June, which resulted in a good water profile in the soil at the beginning of the growing season. The weather during bloom was temperate and resulted in good fruit set and fairly normal yields. During most of the growing season, 2020 was fairly cool, punctuated by a series of heat spikes in late August and early September, then fairly warm temperatures through harvest.

Tasting notes

The complex bouquet of blackberry, boysenberry, black cherry, crème de cassis, and dark chocolate with floral notes of dried rose petals and violets exude from the glass of the captivating, shimmering deep red-robed 2020 ‘Les Pavots.’ A plush, graceful entry builds to a broad mid-palate supported by very fine tannins. Black tea, dark chocolate, graphite, caramel, and savory notes culminate in a late mid-palate burst before resolving in a long, smooth finish. This is a classy, refined ‘Les Pavots.’

Soft, caressing and stylish on the expressive nose. There’s a lovely delicacy to the violet and peony florality generously woven around and intermingling with the blue and black berry and stone fruits. A little touch of wild rosemary too. All very enticing. In the mouth the tannins are incredibly gentle, ultra-fine-grained and yet not inconsiderable. The wine is deceptively dense and compact with the softness of the tannins serving to disguise the power at first. But in the end, and with more air, there’s no mistaking the sheer depth and concentration of this wine. It’s rather more Margaux aromatically and Pauillac on the palate! Refined and elegant despite its power and concentration, this is a most exciting new release on la place.

The 2020 Les Pavots is 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and pours an inky red. It reveals a wonderful herbaceous profile of forest herbs, with a more mountainous feel and aromas of pine, menthol, ripe black cherry, and cedar. Full-bodied and more muscularly structured, with dark earth, turned forest floor, blackberry, and tea leaf, the tannins on the finish feel a touch drying at this stage but balanced out with sweet fruit to cushion it. Drink 2025-2040.

The 2020 Les Pavots, a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot, is deep garnet-purple in color. Notions of plum preserves, creme de cassis, and fruitcake slowly emerge with swirling, leading to hints of pencil lead, charcoal, and garrigue. The full-bodied palate has firm, grainy tannins and just enough freshness to support the rich, generous fruit, finishing with a peppery lift.

The 2020 Les Pavots is made up of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 3% Petite Verdot and includes fruit from some of the oldest vines at Peter Michael, planted in 1989. Unusually, there is no Cabernet Franc in the blend this vintage, as it was affected by the wildfire smoke. Deep ruby-purple in color, it is shy to begin, taking time to reveal pure red plums, chocolate, graphite, green bell pepper and tobacco leaves. The medium-bodied palate offers generous, alluringly herbal fruits, a luxurious, silky frame and seamless acidity, finishing long and latent. It develops dramatically in the glass, suggesting it will require a few hours in the decanter to show at its best. 1,910 cases were made; this will be released in February of 2023.

The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Les Pavots is a delicate, understated wine. The 2020 shows a bit less mid-palate density than in most years, but its balance is impeccable. Dried flowers, spice, leather, tobacco and incense are all nicely layered in this attractive, mid-weight Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The blend is, unusually, high in Cabernet Sauvignon and low in both Merlot and Cabernet Franc because of the stringent selection required in 2020.

Offers a rich, welcoming set of cocoa, singed vanilla, sweet tobacco and black tea aromas followed by mulled plum, boysenberry and black currant flavors that cruise through slowly, all carried by a velvety structure. Ends with hints of espresso crema. For the hedonist crowd. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2036. 1,910 cases made.

This is a powerful red with blackberry, black olive and a hint of mint. Some brown sugar, too. Full-bodied and dense, with lots of fruit and velvety, plush tannins. Crushed-stone and wet-earth character, too. The higher percentage of merlot (14%) and no cabernet franc makes this unique for Les Pavots. Give it three or four years to open.
