Penfolds, Grange - Barossa Valley 2021
Penfolds, 180 years of innovative winemaking.
Since 1844, Penfolds has been grounded in experimentation, curiosity and uncompromising quality. It is a pioneering spirit which still rings true after nearly two centuries, that has helped Penfolds become one of the most celebrated winemakers in the world today. Over its 180-year history, only four winemakers have helmed Penfolds, each serving as a steward of a distinctive philosophy and style—what we might refer to as the 'House style'.There is a strand of shared DNA throughout Penfolds family of wines, yet each clearly expresses its unique persona.
Grange, the Australian iconic wine
Grange stands as Penfolds' iconic flagship red wine. It is crafted from carefully selected Shiraz grapes, mainly sourced from the Barossa Valley, with a small quantity of Cabernet Sauvignon. Born in 1951, Grange showcases Penfolds' exceptional blending expertise. Widely regarded as Australia's top-tier wine, Grange holds official recognition as a Heritage Icon of South Australia.
Tasting notes:
The Penfolds Grange 2021 Shiraz shows a deep mauve-red color with a dense black core. The nose is intense and complex, blending dark chocolate, Copha, marbled meats, soy, balsamic glaze, spices, and smoky, earthy notes.
It’s powerful, youthful, and unapologetically bold.
On the palate, it’s rich and expansive, with deep structure and dark fruit intensity drawn from Barossa, McLaren Vale, and Clare Valley.
Flavors include dark plum, star anise, liquorice, menthol, and savory notes like Worcestershire sauce and peppered beef. Tannins are sleek and firm, with subtle oak influence. A wine built for long aging, revealing more with time — classic, monumental Grange.
