Since 1844, Penfolds has been grounded in experimentation, curiosity and uncompromising quality. It is a pioneering spirit which still rings true after nearly two centuries, that has helped Penfolds become one of the most celebrated winemakers in the world today. Over its 180-year history, only four winemakers have helmed Penfolds, each serving as a steward of a distinctive philosophy and style—what we might refer to as the 'House style'.There is a strand of shared DNA throughout Penfolds family of wines, yet each clearly expresses its unique persona.
Grange, the Australian iconic wine
Grange stands as Penfolds' iconic flagship red wine. It is crafted from carefully selected Shiraz grapes, mainly sourced from the Barossa Valley, with a small quantity of Cabernet Sauvignon. Born in 1951, Grange showcases Penfolds' exceptional blending expertise. Widely regarded as Australia's top-tier wine, Grange holds official recognition as a Heritage Icon of South Australia.
The 2020 Vintage:
Tasting notes:
The 2021 Grange is dense and deep red, with a nose of intense Shiraz character—anise, licorice, wintergreen, and fennel, underpinned by crushed plum and hints of pan juices. The 100% new oak is seamlessly integrated, adding complexity without overshadowing the fruit. On the palate, red fruits and maraschino cherry lead into darker notes of blackberry, black cherry, and Black Forest cake. Velvety, talc-like tannins blend with cocoa dust for a lush, round texture. Oak nuances of sandalwood complement this assured, distinctive wine.
