Pedesclaux - Pauillac 2022

The Lorenzetti family, a committed family

Jacky and Françoise Lorenzetti purchased in 2009 this Grand Cru Classé in 1855 in Pauillac. Now, together with Manon, their daughter, they work as a family, and the atmosphere they have created on their estate is both rigorous and convivial. They are driven by the love of high quality work an the respect for the land and for the men who work it.

2022, the first certified-organic vintage

The 2022 vintage marks a milestone for Château Pédesclaux, thanks to it being the first that received certification for organic viticulture. This is the result of an ambitious project led by the Lorenzetti family since their acquisition of this Pauillac Grand Cru Classé in 2009, informed by their commitment to eco-responsible practices.

In 2022, the bottle of Pedesclaux is adorned with a new label, proudly mentionning "organic wine".

Tasting notes: complexity, depth, freshness and tension

Despite the extreme and warm weather conditions, 2022 surprises us with its balance and freshness. A unique blend of the best qualities from the last three great vintages of Pédesclaux, 2022 combines the energy of 2018, the concentration and freshness of 2019, and the linearity of 2020.
An exceptional vintage, 2022 illustrates a rare depth of color, while the concentration and fleshiness of Merlot creates sapidity on the palate. The Petit Verdot imparts a floral touch and a notable tannic finesse, while the Cabernet Franc lends spicy notes and further enhances the depth of the wine. The Cabernet Sauvignon is beautifully integrated, providing a certain dynamism and a strong Pauillac identity to the 2022.

The 2022 vintage marks a significant chapter for Château Pédesclaux as its first to receive organic certification. While the label has taken on a fresh new look, the wine’s pure and unaltered soul remains untouched. Before the glass is even swirled, a breath of wisteria blooms rises to greet you, followed by the lively fragrances of blueberries, cherries, and bayberries, fluttering like butterflies in a gentle dance. On the palate, a tender sweetness flows seamlessly into a savory, saline finish, revealing a beauty that is both pristine and intricately layered. Though more intense than the 2020 vintage, it retains an irresistibly fresh, silky texture. If this isn’t the “little fairy of Pauillac,” what else could it possibly be?

Bright black cherries, violets, leafy tobacco, and some meaty, iron, and mineral notes all emerge from the 2022 Château Pédesclaux, a beautifully textured, layered Pauillac that has medium to full-bodied richness, ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish. I think it’s certainly as good as the 2018, 2019, and 2020 and is a classic Pauillac from this team that will benefit from 4-5 years and evolve nicely over the following two decades.

2027-2042 93/100

The 2022 Pédesclaux, matured in 60% new oak, has a very floral bouquet with violet and peony infusing the blackberry and blueberry fruit aromas. There is just a little jamminess when juxtaposed against its peers. The palate is medium-bodied, ripe and bold, with a fleshy opening and just a touch of sucrosity on the finish that detracts from its nobility.

Fascinating aromas of blackberries and blackcurrants with some dried-herb undertones. Medium- to full-bodied, this has a solid core of fruit and a long and flavorful finish. Focused and tannin-driven with a lovely integration and intensity. A blend of 68% cabernet sauvignon, 22% merlot, 7% cabernet franc and 3% petit verdot. Give this three to four years to soften, but I am impressed with the energy here already. Try after 2028.

The 2022 Pédesclaux is packed with black cherry, plum, new leather, licorice and chocolate. This sumptuous, bold Pauillac has plenty to offer in a decidedly flamboyant style.

Floral and fragrant, really perfumed and scented, inviting, deep and cool. Sleek and silky, the fruit has gorgeous purity and cleanliness, with tannins that are filling and ripe but also have bite and grip. The wine has power but delivered so delicately with tannins that give a sculpted element to the profile with precision and definition. Feels extremely polished, on the tense and straight side, the Cabernet is not so expansive or plush but this feels like it has that Pauillac swagger with lots of life and energy. Very drinkable and impressive from director Vincent Bache-Gabrielsen. 16% press wine, usually 12-13%. New label as of 2022 celebrating organic certification. 3% completes the blend. Total acidity: 3.7. 65% new oak barrels. 3.86pH.

In 2022, Château Pédesclaux received its first organic certification. Though the label has been rejuvenated, the taste remains the familiar Château Pédesclaux I know. Before I could even swirl the glass, a captivating wisteria greets my senses, while blueberries, cherries, and bayberries transformed into tiny bees, playfully dancing around. The sweetness on the palate and the savory notes in the aftertaste harmonize, displaying ethereal beauty. Despite being richer than the 2020 vintage, this wine maintains a delicate presence; if this isn't the "fairy of Pauillac," then what is?

The 2022 Pédesclaux was picked 12 to 27 September and aged in 65% new oak. This has far more fruité than the Deuxième Vin, plush black cherries and boysenberry fruit, more floral in style with neatly integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chalky tannins, good tension, gentle grip with a graphite infused, powdery-textured finish. A hint of brine on the aftertaste. Very fine, though I would like to see it develop a little more sustain.

A blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot, aging in 65% new oak, the 2022 Pedesclaux has a pH of 3.86 and a TPI of 70. The yield was 37 hl/ha and this is the first year that it has been certified organic. The color is deep garnet-purple and the nose needs a fair bit of swirling to coax out evocative notes of blackcurrant cordial, juicy black plums, and black raspberries, with touches of violets, licorice, and wood smoke. The full-bodied palate is concentrated, yet possesses impressive tension and a firm backbone of ripe, grainy tannins, finishing long and layered.

The 2022 Château Pédesclaux is a beautiful wine, with an almost bloody, iron-like character in its cassis and blue fruits as well as notes of leafy herbs. It's medium to full-bodied, has a layered, silky texture, and terrific purity.

The 2022 Pédesclaux is terrific. It shows a level of finesse that has not always been present here. There's plenty of richness and power, but also better balance than in some years. Spice, leather, menthol, rose petal, licorice and a discreet touch of oak are beautifully woven together. This is a fine vintage for Pédesclaux. Drinking window : 2028-2047

On the floral edge, with black currants, black cherries, licorice, cigar box and forest floor in the nose, the palate is round in texture. The fruits are fresh, creamy, sweet, ripe and lively, with a finish that is long, and layered with red, black and blue fruits. Give it a few years in the cellar, and enjoy over the following 2 or more decades. The wine is blended using 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. 14.44 % ABV, 3.86 pH. Harvesting took place September 12 - September 22. Yields were 37 hectoliters per hectare. Drink from 2025-2050.

Now certified organic, the 2022 Pedésclaux exhibits aromas of dark berries, plums and pencil shavings, followed by a medium to full-bodied, suave and refined palate that's a touch lean on the finish. As it fleshes out with élevage, it should come into better balance.
