Pavillon rouge - Margaux 2008

Château Margaux, a founding Premier Cru

Château Margaux is more than a major or even essential growth. It is a founding growth, since the imagery around it had such a decisive influence in shaping the very idea of how a Grand Vin should exist over time and space. Château Margaux’s renown stem equally from the intrinsic genius of the location as from the contributions made by the people who have served it for five centuries. Corinne Mentzelopoulos is one of those personalities that will leave a indelible mark on the great history of Château Margaux.

Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, the story of a great second wine

Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux took its name in 1908. After an eclipse between the thirties and the mid-seventies, its production restarted on the arrival of André Mentzelopoulos in 1977 and at first greatly increased in order to improve the quality of the first wine. From the mid-90s, the creation of a third wine in its turn, allowed for a more rigorous selection for Pavillon Rouge.

The quality of Pavillon Rouge has become very close to that of the first wine because all the plots involved contributed to the blending of Château Margaux not so long ago. It may not have the same “magic” as its elder brother, but it definitely shares its flavours, its balance and the same subtle senses of power and softness.

The 2008 Pavillon Rouge de Margaux has a bright raspberry pastille and strawberry scented bouquet with just a slight copper piping aromas tucked underneath that personally I found distracting. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite edgy tannin. I admire the fruit here, tobacco-tinged blackberry and bilberry, more graphite scents surfacing towards the finish. It feels persistent in the mouth and should offer another five or six years in drinking pleasure. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 10-Year On tasting.

This is absolutely ready to drink now, showing some lovely perfume that runs through the extremely well balanced palate. It's one of the few that was hard to spit out because the juice grabs you right from the first attack, but it's not in any way a blockbuster. Enjoy this with simple food, don't crowd the flavours, as this is delicacy personified. A great second wine for lovers of gentle elegance, this tiptoes along nicely.

The 2008 Pavillon Rouge didn’t show quite as well as I had hoped, but is still an elegant, berry-scented, spicy, soft Pavillon Rouge with good depth, sweet tannins, and an attractive finish. It can be drunk now or cellared or 12-15 years. Drink 2011-2026

On the firmer side, with a cherry pit edge up front, followed by red currant, floral and iron notes. Yet this fleshes out a touch with air, showing an extra cedar hint as well. Drink now through 2013. –JM

Delicate and refined with aromas and flavors of berries, cedar, and tobacco. Medium to full bodied, fine tannins and fruity, chocolatey finish. Second wine of Margaux. Try it in two years.

(68% cabernet sauvignon, 26% merlot, 5% petit verdot and 1% cabernet franc; 47% of the estate's total production) Medium-full red. Enticing strawberry and pomegranate aromas of modest complexity. Then supple and fresh on the palate, with pleasant, pure red fruit flavors and a somewhat compact mouth feel. The extremely fine tannins are a thing of beauty: though this very smooth wine finishes slightly short, you'll have no trouble draining a bottle far too quickly!

Recht dunkles Rubin. 2013 – 2022

The second wine, the 2008 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux, represents 47% of the crop (keep in mind that 17% of the total crop was sold off in bulk), and is composed of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, and the rest mostly Petit Verdot with a tiny dollop of Cabernet Franc. It is a beautiful wine exhibiting classic purity along with red and black fruits intermixed with licorice, tobacco leaf, and floral nuances. Sweet, round tannins, and a lovely forward freshness suggest this stunning second wine should drink well young, yet last for 15+ years.

68% Cabernet Sauvignon. Second wine which soaked up most of the 2008 Merlot. Mid crimson. Quite delicate and fragrant but no sign of unripeness. Quite angular. Lots of fine tannin. Much less fleshy than Pavillon usually is – lighter rather than softer than the grand vin this year. Drink 2015-21

Moderate intensity on the nose, quite earthy, perhaps less exuberant than previous vintages. Dark fruit – touches of boysenberry and wild hedgerow. A faint hint of thyme. The palate has an understated entry, leading to a rounded, softer Pavillon, texturally like Merlot but with more Cabernet flavours: cedar, sous-bois and a touch of tar. Moderated length. It almost has a Pauillac-like austerity towards the finish, which is an attractive virtue but not in the same class as recent vintages. Tasted April 2009.

Dense red, clear and elegant, less seductive than in previous year, great aromatic purity and density more to do with Cabernet than Merlot. Drink 2014-20.

Currant and berries on the nose, with hints of vanilla and coffee. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and lovely fruit. Refined and pretty, but short.
