Pavillon rouge - Margaux 2006

Château Margaux, a founding Premier Cru

Château Margaux is more than a major or even essential growth. It is a founding growth, since the imagery around it had such a decisive influence in shaping the very idea of how a Grand Vin should exist over time and space. Château Margaux’s renown stem equally from the intrinsic genius of the location as from the contributions made by the people who have served it for five centuries. Corinne Mentzelopoulos is one of those personalities that will leave a indelible mark on the great history of Château Margaux.

Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, the story of a great second wine

Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux took its name in 1908. After an eclipse between the thirties and the mid-seventies, its production restarted on the arrival of André Mentzelopoulos in 1977 and at first greatly increased in order to improve the quality of the first wine. From the mid-90s, the creation of a third wine in its turn, allowed for a more rigorous selection for Pavillon Rouge.

The quality of Pavillon Rouge has become very close to that of the first wine because all the plots involved contributed to the blending of Château Margaux not so long ago. It may not have the same “magic” as its elder brother, but it definitely shares its flavours, its balance and the same subtle senses of power and softness.

Looks quite evolved. A green note on the nose. Some subtlety but an awful lot of acid and tannin. No suggestion of fighting the vintage chacter here! A second bottle seemed a bit richer. Drink 2015-2028

Tight and solid, with currant, raspberry and light tobacco. Full-bodied, chewy and fruity. Closed and slightly hollow. The second wine of Margaux. Best after 2014.

The light, fresh, sensual, round 2006 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux exhibits moderate levels of dark cherry and red currant fruit accompanied by background herb and spice characteristics. Drink it over the next 5-7 years.

2013-2022. Aufhellendes Grant-Purpur. Pfeffriges Bouquet, rote Johannisbeeren, Rosentöne, erfrischend. Im Gaumen sehr fein, cremig, charmante Textur, reife Tannine, im Finale rote Pflaumenschalen, dezente Biterkeit, was noch vom Presswein stammt, schöne Länge.

Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, jugendliche Reflexe, violetter Rand.

Tasted at Margaux. A bright ruby/purple hue. A very lush, voluptuous, alcoholic nose, with well-integrated new oak and a sense of minerality. Cassis, violets and blackberries, all with good definition. The palate is full-bodied, quite tannic and masculine but with a nice tension. Very focused but rather abrupt on the finish. Still, very fine.

Mid to light crimson. highly aromatic. Very lifted and fragrant. Relatively light and even a bit skinny. Nervy and a little bit green even. Only medium weight. Light dry sandy tannins. Pretty fast fade on the finish. Seems to me a relatively weak Pavillon rouge.

Very fruity, mineral and raspberry character. Full and silky, with fine tannins. Slightly hollow midpalate. Yet long and sweet fruit and firm tannins.
