This estate's second wine, the 1995 Pavillon du Chateau Margaux, may turn out to be one of the most delicious examples the property has made. The wine is forward, sexy, round, and generous, with gobs of black fruit and a subtle dosage of new oak. It should drink well for 10-15 years.

Lots of violet and berry in this wine, lively toasted oak character, too. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a medium, smoky finish. An amazing second label from a top estate. Best after 2002.

As I indicated last year, Chateau Margaux's second wine, the 1995 Pavillon de Chateau Margaux ($28.00-33.00) is outrageously good, and certainly the best second wine I have ever tasted from this estate. I rated it 89-91 points. Readers will find it to be a dark ruby/purple-colored, sexy, opulently-textured wine with outstanding purity, and great fruit. A significant amount of Merlot was declassified from the grand vin for this cuvee, which is irrefutably seductive and silky-textured. It should drink well for a decade.

At Chateau Margaux, July and August, 1995, were the driest in over 40 years, but the weather was not as hot as in 1989 and 1990. The Merlot, which was harvested in mid-September, came in at a whopping 13.5-14% natural alcohol. The Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested between September 27 and October 3. According to Margaux's manager, Paul Pontallier, it was far riper and richer than in 1994. Chateau Margaux's second wine, the 1995 Pavillon de Chateau Margaux, appears to be one of the finest I have tasted. Fifty percent of the crop went into the second wine, including the most alcoholic cuvees of Merlot. The result is a seductive, lush, heady wine that is a candidate for a nearly outstanding rating - if it holds the quality it was exhibiting in late March.
