Pavillon blanc - Bordeaux 2021

Château Margaux, a fascinating 1st Grand Cru Classé

Château Margaux’s renown stem equally from the intrinsic genius of the location as from the contributions made by the people who have served it for five centuries. Corinne Mentzelopoulos is one of those personalities that will leave a indelible mark on the great history of Château Margaux. She has been presiding over the destiny of the estate since her father tragically passed away in 1980. She has honored this heritage, vintage after vintage, all the while questioning herself with the aim of projecting Château Margaux into the future.

Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux

Sold in the 19th century under the name « Château Margaux vin de sauvignon », it has existed under the brand name « Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux » since 1920 and its label has not changed since that date.

The eleven-hectare vineyard is located on a very old parcel and planted only with Sauvignon Blanc. Today it benefits from the new wine cellar’s ultra-modern installations designed by Norman Foster.

The finesse, complexity, richness and the length in the mouth of Pavillon Blanc are incomparable for a wine produced only from Sauvignon. The recent vintages have opened up new horizons in quality, ageing capacity and style which has become more mineral and much more complex.

2021, a sumptuous vintage

The harvest took place from September 7 to 13, a little later than the ten-year average. The grapes were perfectly healthy and, above all, the concentration of the juice was excellent.

The 2021 vintage is sumptuous: a perfect balance, a rich and complex concentration, a creamy mouthfeel, an acidity and fresh aromas that give the wine an endless length. It is probably on a par with the 2017 vintage in terms of quality.

This is very tightly wound, with dried apples, limes, blossom honey, flint, light mangoes and some lemon curd, as well as hints of stone. Medium- to full-bodied with tangy acidity and white peaches, Meyer lemons and minerals. It is focused and very refined. There's plenty of compact fruit, and the energetic acidity is phenomenal. Drinkable, but give this three or four years.

The 2021 Pavillon Blanc is likely to be remembered as a reference-point vintage for the new racy, incisive style that Château Margaux has favored with this cuvée for several years now. Wafting from the glass with notes of lime, pink grapefruit and pear mingled with white flowers, green almond and mint, it's medium-bodied, bright and racy, with tangy acids and a penetrating, saline finish.

Aniseed, quince, fennel, sage, lime zest and slate grip, this slides along the palate, building to mouthwatering finish. A great white wine that pulls you up short, it was brilliant En Primeur, and is better now. Intense cut grass and steel, just enough tension to kick up a little drama, stretching out over the palate, with plenty of lees stirring over ageing to round out the mid palate. One of the wines of the vintage. September 7 to 13 (unusual in recent years for white harvest to start in September rather than August).

The 2021 Pavillon Blanc is fascinating to taste next to the 2020, as the two wines represent total stylistic opposites. Bright citrus, mineral and saline notes are at the heart of the 2021, a Pavillon Blanc that sizzles with tension an energy.

Since I reviewed the 2020 last year, I tasted the bottled 2021 Pavillon Blanc during my visit. The nose is a little stubborn at first, opening with discrete white peach and yellow plum scents, a touch of jasmine. It's certainly less flamboyant than the barrel sample. The palate is well balanced with a lively entry, citrus fresh with lemon verbena, menthol and pineapple notes. Strangely, it's got something…Chardonnay about it! Vibrant, maybe a little exotic compared to previous vintages, full of joie-de-vivre on the finish.

Superbly defined and Ninja-like with its expressive fruit and combative acidity, this is as keen-edged as Pavillon gets, and it is seriously challenging with brittle acidity and amazing deft citrus flavours over lighter moments of lantana and honeysuckle. Crisp pear, ginger and white peach notes swirl, but citrus holds fort making this a superstar in 2021. 19

This is a really serious white. Vibrant and tangy with fantastic energy. Plenty of lime zest, pineapple, crushed stone, cedar, anise and white lavender. Grapefruit, too. Medium body. So much tension at the end. Focused and precise and it just keeps on going. The pH is 3.04, yet it has intense ripeness. A masterpiece of sauvignon blanc. The chateau says it is the best Pavillon Blanc ever. 100% sauvignon blanc.

While the red gets all the love at this heralded address, don't miss their white, which has hit incredible heights over the past 7-8 years. Coming from a selection of 52% of the production and all Sauvignon Blanc, the 2021 Blanc De Margaux offers a vivid perfume of white grapefruits, salted citrus, and honeyed minerality. This carries to a medium-bodied, vibrant, vivid white with bright yet integrated acidity, plenty of mid-palate concentration, and a great finish. It needs 2-3 years of bottle age, but it's a brilliant wine in the making.

White flowers, yellow citrus and orange rind with a hint of white peach. green apples and spice nuances are all over the place here. The wine shows a lushness and rich character that is equally fresh, crisp and vibrant on the palate and in the finish. In fact, it is almost racy in its attitude. The wine is produced from 100% Sauvignon Blanc. 13.3% ABV. Drink from 2024-2037. 95-95

The 2021 Pavillon Blanc, picked between 7 and 13 September, before the rains, has a well-defined bouquet with scents of pineapple, kumquat, touches of white peach coming through with time. The palate is very concentrated with sour lemon that counterbalances the fatness and density. Touch of lemongrass on the finish.

The 2021 Pavillon Blanc is a fabulous example of how compelling the vintage is for the best dry whites. It marries the nervy freshness that has characterized the Blanc of late and yet also has quite a bit of textural richness. I was pretty shocked by its weight, to be honest. Lemon confit, white flowers, sage and mint gradually unfurl in the glass. Quite simply, the 2021 is one of the finest Pavillon Blancs in recent memory.

The 2021 Pavillon Blanc is one of the finest recent vintages of this cuvée, combining complete maturity with incisive acids to striking effect. Offering up aromas of confit lemon, citrus zest, crisp orchard fruit and wet stones, it's medium to full-bodied, chiseled and tensile, with striking concentration and chalky structuring dry extract, concluding with a long, mineral finish. It was picked between September 7 and 13 and attained 13.3% natural alcohol.

Gorgeous peach tone on the nose, with bright lemon, clementine, green apple skin and crushed stones too. Super sharp and fresh straight out the gate, this is searing, focussed and neat with a shot of lemon juice, so zingy on the mid palate giving a green apple and peach freshness towards the end. Fruity and extremely lively. It has an unctuous texture, not weighty but delectably textured with a silkiness. You have the acidity but also the opulence, it’s both sharp and immensely layered. A joyful combination of freshness and power - supremely impressive with vibrancy and mass appeal.
