Pavie - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 1995

Appellation Saint-Emilion Grand Cru
Millesime 1995
Contenance Bouteille (75 cl)

A brilliant dark purple color lacks the opacity of most 1995s. Some cranberry and red cherry fruit emerge from the wine's earthy nose, but this is a compact, attenuated, cleanly made but restrained, astringent, tannic wine. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2012. Last tasted 11/97

Medium plum/ruby in color, with a distinctive peppery, leafy, spicy nose with vague hints of red cherry and currant fruit, this is a rigid, austere wine with an angular personality and severe tannin. There is some ripe fruit on the attack, but that is quickly dominated by the wine's structural components. This may turn out to be a pleasant wine, but my best guess is that it will dry out. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2010.

Elegant and refined. Floral and fruity, with roses and blackberries. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a fruity, chocolate aftertaste. Best after 1999.

As readers may have noted, I have been critical of recent efforts by Pavie because of their lean, austere, malnourished personalities. The 1993-95 efforts offer little evidence that things have taken a turn for the better.

The 1995 is a significant improvement over the 1994. The wine exhibits a medium to dark ruby color, an elegant, cherry, spicy, mineral, and wood-scented nose, medium body, sweet suppleness to its attack, and a smooth, elegant, measured finish. It should drink well for 10-12 years.
