Pavie Macquin - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2008

Château Pavie Macquin is named after the grandfather of the current owners: Albert Macquin (1852-1911), who Saint-Emilion has to thank for the use of grafted plants designed to save the vineyards devastated by phylloxera.

In 1994, Nicolas Thienpont was appointed as manager. Along with Stéphane Derenoncourt, they refine Pavie Macquin’s personality and have developed high-quality viticulture which has elevated the château to the prestigious rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé wine in 2006, and once again in 2012. Recently, his son Cyrille Thienpont has begun to play an active role in Pavie Macquin's management.

The Pavie Macquin vineyard is characterized by its location on a plateau, next to Mondot hill and on the edge of the Fongaban fault. In one unique holding, it borders Troplong Mondot to the east and Château Pavie to the south, and overlooks Trottevieille to the north.

The 2008 Pavie-Macquin is fabulous. An exceptionally beautiful wine, the 2008 is positively stellar. In the glass, the 2008 is aromatically deep, silky and vibrant. The year was marked by an extremely long growing season with an early start and a late harvest that kept getting pushed back because of unusually cool nights. The Cabernets came in only at the end of October.

Sliced plums and almost peaches on the nose. Love it. Mineral and truffles too. Full bodied, and powerful with a long, long finish. Sneaks up on you. Give it three to four years before trying.

Consultants Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt have produced a beautiful St.-Emilion that tastes like the quintessence of crushed rocks intermixed with blueberry, blackberry, black raspberry, licorice, camphor and truffle notes. This full-bodied effort should drink well in 4-5 years, and last for two decades or more. It achieved 14.5% natural alcohol. Drink 2015-2035. 94+ points

Quite flattering, with ripe, almost showy fig, boysenberry and blackberry fruit layered with velvety tannins and backed by notes of anise and violet, which linger gently on the suave finish. rather bright and defined for the vintage. A classy wine. Drink now through 2015. -J.M

Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, fast opaker Kern, violette Reflexe.

Glass-staining purple-black. Very pure, complex merlot-dominated nose offers deep scents of plum, black cherry, smoke and minerals. Black cherry syrup and bay leaf flavors coat the palate, leaving a long and suave trail of flavor on the back. The still-youthful tannins are anything but shy but not so powerful that they would detract from the pleasure of drinking this wine after a couple years of cellaring. This solidly built Pavie-Macquin should go on in bottle for at least 15 or 20 years.

I tasted this wine on four occasions, on one of which I was convinced it was still going through malolactic fermentation. It is another superb effort from this property that was elevated to premier grand cru classe status until a judge in Libourne, for unknown reasons, threw out the classification, a decision beyond belief, that is now under appeal. A number of exceptional wines have emerged from Pavie Macquin, which is managed by Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt, and the 2008 boasts a whopping 14.5% natural alcohol, higher than in 2005, 2000, or 1998. While extremely high in tannin and very unevolved, for those with patience and cold cellars, or who plan to pass on their wines to their children, this is a worthwhile choice. It is that backward, concentrated, and impressive. It exhibits a black/purple color in addition to stunning notes of graphite, black fruits, underbrush, chocolate, and roasted coffee beans. Full-bodied, powerful, and rich, the high but sweet tannins, combined with the freshness of the acids make for a remarkably youthful, nuanced wine that should easily age for three decades.

Monumental mais avec la pointe de rigidité dans le tanin qui va avec le monument, serré, nerveux, soutenu par une acidité presque mordante qui va certainement conserver l’éclat de sa saveur un bon demi-siècle !

This has a very precise nose, tense black cherry and blueberry, wonderful definition. Not trying too hard – very natural. The palate is just superb: very pure, extremely fine tannins, immense focus and definition. Dark cherries and a touch of blueberry. Precise finish – this is top class. Bravo! Tasted April 2009.

Bright healthy crimson. Rich, juicy, succulent fruit. Really appetising. Lots of ripe fruit plus lots of acid and ripe tannin. Truly a youthful, but promising, package. Well done! Maybe just a tad too tart? Or maybe this will keep it going splendidly for the long life it deserves. Drink 2017-30

Iron fist in a velvet glove. Seductive ripe fruit (cherry notes) coating a powerful tannic frame, the minerality of the terroir evident on the finish. A unique style. Drink 2018-2030.

Flowers such as violets galore on the nose. Ripe fruit too. Full-bodied, with bright fruit and citrusy acidity. Long and racy. Really bright and wonderful.
