Paul Hobbs, Cristina's Signature - Napa Valley 2020

Pioneering winemaker Paul Hobbs established his eponymous winery in Sebastopol, Calif. in 1991. Guided by his vision and dedication to showcasing terroir, the winery is continuously refining the art of winemaking utilizing minimal intervention practices and meticulous vineyard management. Today, Paul crafts some of Napa Valley’s highly sought after cabernet sauvignons, in addition to world-class pinot noir and chardonnay from cool-climate, coastal influenced sites in Sonoma County. The rocky, volcanic soils prevalent throughout our site and the Coombsville AVA lend a distinct minerality to wines produced from this region. Nathan Coombs Estate contains volcanic tuff which is a sedimentary rock made of compacted volcanic ash, and igneous rock, which is formed by the cooling of magma. Cabernet Sauvignon thrives in these rocky, well-drained soils, developing complex, elegant fruit.

The 2020 vintage is the inaugural vintage of Cristina’s Signature. This wine was created by Paul Hobbs’ wife, Cristina.

The 2020 vintage

Weather conditions

A dry winter started the season with less than half the region’s average rainfall leading to a mild spring and early season bud break. Summer began with relatively moderate temperatures resulting in good phenolic development, allowing fruit to ripen and mature slowly on the vine. Consecutive heat spells coupled with a rare mid-August lightning storm accelerated the start of harvest two weeks earlier than average. All fruit was hand-harvested within seven weeks, and although challenging on many fronts, our highly skilled team persevered at every stage and excelled in their meticulous picking, sorting, and barrel selections. While some wines will not be produced as they did not meet our standards for quality, those that were are in very small quantities, ensuring the limited remaining bottlings showcase their full character with great energy, depth of flavor, and focus.

Tasting notes

Exhibiting a deep garnet hue, our 2020 Cristina’s Signature captivates with a lush bouquet of crushed blackberry, wild sage, fresh cigar box, and a delicate tobacco leaf note. The palate is remarkably balanced with elegant, supple tannins and fresh acidity that wraps around red currant, dark chocolate, and boysenberry alongside subtle notes of dried herbs and vanilla. The seamlessly layered mid-palate provides tension through the long, complex finish.

A new wine (or at least a new identity for this wine) and an exciting new release for la place from this Napa (and Mendoza) superstar. Oaky, yes. But. wow, what complexity! The parfumier’s essences of flowers – a little like Morley Coeur de Vallée – but with more rose and less peony. Incredibly concentrated. Very cassis. Liquorice – red and black. Earthy notes. A touch of sous bois. Raspberry purée. Very fine-grained and supremely gentle tannins. Tight to the spine and hyper-structured. Lovely grip, rippling the edges of the wine as it courses over the palate triggering, as it does so, the release of an intense sapidity. A truly exceptional wine, above all in the context of this vintage. It manages an almost delicate finish which is remarkable for a wine with such power. Vanilla in the empty glass.

The single-varietal 2020 Cristina's Signature Cabernet Sauvignon is deep garnet-purple in color. Notes of stewed black plums, fruitcake, creme de cassis, and Chinese five spice jump from the glass with hints of tobacco and dusty soil in the background. The full-bodied palate is jam packed with black fruit, with sturdy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing a little chewy.

This Napa wine is brand new to the Place de Bordeaux this year joining Paul Hobbs' Argentinian wine. Clean blueberries and dark plums on the nose - smells ripe, full and fragrant but fresh too with menthol aromas and soft wood spicing. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is ample and vibrant with richness and purity. The tannins are amazing - meltingly soft yet this is full bodied with signature plushness and weight. The gorgeous texture expands in the mouth while the clean, pure and fresh flavours give an enjoyable metallic, iron and stone tang which lingers alongside liquorice, clove and mint. Very Napa but very modern, precise and well defined giving just the right amount of strength, confidence, sunkissed currant fruit with elegance, finesse and style. Ageing 20 months in French oak barrels, 71% new.

Blackcurrant and graphite, like lead pencil. So aromatic. Intense, perfectly ripe fruit. Full and polished with delicious fruit and tannins that melt into the wine. Rich, yet fresh. Better after 202

Showcases the purity and bright Cabernet fruit of Coombsville, with floral, graphite, smoke, thyme and sage along with blueberry and cassis. Aromatically fresh without sacrificing concentration, grip and tension. A brilliant first vintage, for a wine that is only being sold through the Bordeaux négociant system. Just 200 cases for this vintage. 71% new oak, harvest September 24 to October 1. Unfiltered and unfined. 100% estate fruit. This is the southernmost winery in Coombsville, bought by Paul Hobbs in 2012, located just in front of the mountains so protected from winds from the San Pablo bay while still being cooler than most of Napa, offering a counterpoint to valley fruit and particularly useful in extreme years like 2020. Label painted by Paul's wife Christina.
