One of the top successes of the vintage, this blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot was harvested between October 8 and 24. The late harvest ensured perfect ripeness as evidenced by the sweet bouquet of black cherries, lead pencil shavings, cassis and subtle barbecue smoke. Well-balanced with good acidity, ripe tannins, medium to full body and a layered mouthfeel, this excellent 2008 can be drunk now and over the next 15+ years. Drink 2011-2026

(a blend of 55% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot, 3% petit verdot and 2% cabernet franc) Deep inky red. Profound but reticent nose suggests at ripe blackcurrant, plum and black pepper, as well as a hint of sawdust. Very full and rich but nicely balanced thanks to harmonious acids, with persistent blackberry and plum flavors and a strong spine of tannins that will take years to resolve. Still, this strikes me as a potentially superb vintage for Pape-Clement.

Not far off the quality of the monumental 2005, Pape Clement’s 2008 was cropped at a lowly 30 hectoliters per hectare. The final blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot, and there are approximately 7,500 cases. The 2008 displays a dense purple color as well as a classic northern Pessac-Leognan nose of truffles, asphalt, scorched earth, charcoal, creme de cassis, spice box, and spring flowers. Super-pure and medium to full-bodied with stunning concentration, admirable purity, slightly more acidity than usual, and formidable depth and length, given the sweetness of the tannins and the ripeness of the fruit, this wine should be approachable in 4-5 years, but the vintage’s crisp style suggests it will last for 25-30 or more years.

Perfectionniste, Bernard Magrez met tout en oeuvre pour réaliser les meilleurs vins possibles. Pour cela "no limit" est sa deviste! Son nouvel axe est la recherche de l'élégance maximum. "J'aime beaucoup ce 2008, c'ets l'un des trois millésimes de la décennie! Il n'a pas la masse tannique des 2005 mais il possède plus de fraîcheur que les 2003", commente Bernard Margrez. C'est indiscutable! Pape Clément 2008 offre un nez magnifique au fruit superbe, éclatant, très mûr et très frais à la fois. Un fruit que l'on retrouve dans une bouche riche, aux tanins mûrs et gras, au boisé très élégant et aux arômes complexes très persistants.

A blend of 39% Merlot, 56% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. The bouquet is fleshier with more fruit intensity than the Clarence Haut-Brion: blackberry, boysenberry, a hint of green pepper (not too much) and good definition. The palate is medium-bodied, austere on the entry but with some decent fruit in the middle. There is a slight dustiness to the tannins, chalky texture towards the finish, but there is sufficient fruit here to balance it out in the long-term. Tasted April 2009.

Very dark purple. Unusually ripe purple berry aromas. Very sweet and luscious and not especially bordeaux but capable of giving lots of pleasure. Fine, dry tannins. Difficult stylistic question, rating this wine. It’s almost more right bank than Graves but so long as you know that in advance and aren’t expecting a classic refreshing Graves, you could find it rewarding. Drink 2014-24
