Pagodes de Cos - Saint-Estèphe 2011

Les Pagodes de Cos, an initiation into the style of Cos d'Estournel.

Property of Michel Reybier since 2000, Cos d’Estournel pursues its destiny, between audacity and humility.

Since its creation in 1994, Pagodes de Cos is made from grapes grown in a dedicated terroir whose vines are 40 years old on average.  Seductive, balanced and voluptuous wine, each vintage is an excellent introduction to the style of Cos d'Estournel.

This estate’s second wine, the 2011 Les Pagodes de Cos reveals reasonably broad, round, black currant and black cherry fruit notes, medium body, surprisingly good texture and a soft finish. An attractive, plump effort, it will drink well for a decade.  It mirrors its grander sibling as it is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot.

This is delicious second wine from Cos d’Estournel, with spice, meat and currant character. Full body, round tannins and a clean finish. Needs two or three years to soften but it’s already very good.

Ripe and friendly in feel, with black licorice-framed plum, boysenberry and blackberry fruit flavors that are open and accessible. A twinge of plum skin provides the only support on the finish, so drink up sooner rather than later. Drink now through 2018.

(65% cabernet sauvignon, 33% merlot and 2% petit verdot; 70% of total production; 3.4 g/l total acidity; 3.55 pH; 71 IPT; 13.3% alcohol): Bright ruby. Very fresh aromas of blackcurrant, minerals and cinnamon. Fresh and pure wine in a polite style, with sneaky concentration of flavor. Finishes with very good length. Pagodes has been on a roll of late.

The 2011 Les Pagodes de Cos is a stylish, elegant, mid-weight blend of two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest mostly Merlot with a small dab of Petit Verdot. It offers attractive berry fruit, licorice, underbrush and spice box notes in a finesse styled format. Drink it over the next decade.

The 2011 Les Pagodes de Cos is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. It has a lifted, floral bouquet with ripe Merlot filling in the gaps of the Cabernet nicely. The palate is oaky on the entry with a touch of vanilla inflecting the ripe black fruit with hints of espresso towards the tannic but well-balanced finish. This is commendable for the vintage. Tasted April 2012.

The Pagodes is perfumed and attractive with cedar box, spices and anise in the finish. Full bodied and supple wine. The extraction has a light touch which allows the lovely aromatics to surface. A balanced Pagodes with a drinking window of at least a decade.

Drink 2018-2030 Intense cherry red. Spicy dark cherry. Then sweet dark cherry on the palate. Dry and bright too. Supple, lithe but full tannins. Cool fresh elegant, classical finish. (JH) 13.3%

High pitched today, with bing cherry, floral and incense notes allied to a creamy texture and a long, suave finish. There's ample stuffing here but it's restrained right now, with a twinge of iron buried deeply on the finish. Tasted non-blind.—J.M.

With all the freshness of the year, this wine is ripe and soft. It has acidity and juicy black-currant flavor. The wine is spiced, with its ripe tannins well integrated. —R.V
