Nénin - Pomerol 2011

Great vintages improve over time...
In this year of 2021, the 2011 vintage should be considered with great interest: the Château Nénin team is proud to present to you, ten years later, these bottles sealed with wax that have been stored in optimal conditions in the heart of the estate's cellars.

THE 2011 VINTAGE:
2011, one of the hottest vintages of this century, was above all marked by an exceptionally hot and dry spring leading to an extremely early flowering date. The very strong hydric constraints at the beginning of the summer season were moderated by a well distributed rainfall. The final maturity was thus reached with a high phenolic potential, whichever the grape variety.

A terroir in the very heart of the Pomerol appellation..
Château Nénin is one of the most beautiful estates in the appellation. The Grand Vin du Château Nénin is produced on the 8 hectares of the best clay and gravel parcels of the famous Pomerol Plateau.
As soon as he bought the estate in 1997, Jean-Hubert Delon immediately undertook major work. Aware of the extraordinary potential of this estate, the vineyard was extensively restructured with new parcels planted with massale selection of the Cabernet Francs from the Léoville Las Cases enclosure. The production equipment have been completely rethought, extended and developed in order to produce the best wines out of the splendid grapes born on this exceptional terroir.

This is balanced, graceful, white pepper spice, complex and concentrated with pencil lead and grilled oak. Plenty of raspberry leaf and violet flowers, showing precision and grace - less Pomerol signature than the warmer vintages, but it is a delicious wine with plenty of life ahead. 35% new oak. This is the Right Bank outpost of the Delon family that also owns Leoville Las-Cases. While they have made major improvements to Nenin, I feel it still has a Medoc-like personality in spite of the fact it is about 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. The 2011 Nenin displays an attractive, clean, raspberry and black currant-scented nose, good richness, and a Medoc-like firmness. It is a medium-bodied, pleasant 2011 to drink over the next 7-8 years.

Fresh and tangy with citrus, berry and currant character. Full to medium body with firm tannins and a mineral finish. Better in 2017.

Direct and lightly firm, with a cherry pit note guiding the core of raspberry and cherry coulis flavors. Light spice and sandalwood shadings course through the lightly taut finish. Best from 2015 through 2020.

(a 78/22 blend of merlot and cabernet sauvignon): Purple-ruby. Perfumed aromas of cassis, coffee and minerals. Bright, juicy and suave, with pure black fruit and mineral flavors complicated by a touch of chocolate. High but harmonious acidity gives this wine a graceful mouthfeel, which I find to be a welcome dimension if a bit atypical of Nenin. Finishes smooth and persistent. One of the most promising young Nenins in quite some time.

A blend of 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc, the 2011 Nenin reveals a Medoc-like style of nicely delineated, medium-bodied black cherry and black currant fruit intermixed with hints of flowers and earthy/mineral notes. Impressive purity, good texture and a decent finish suggest it will drink well for a decade.

Environ 45% de la propriété, 78% merlot, 22% cabernet franc. Fruité dense, même style primeur que Fugue mais avec plus de fraîcheur et de profondeur, allonge très fruitée.

With 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc at 13.7% alcohol, the wine will be aged in 25% new oak. Truffle, floral and black raspberry perfume notes with a masculine fresh, ripe black cherry and cocoa finish. This Pomerol requires time for the tannins to soften. 89-91 Pts

Tasted at Leoville Las-Cases. The Nénin 2011 is a blend of 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc with 17% pressed wine cropped at 44 hl/ha. I do like the nose of this Nénin that has fine delineation and more purity and focus than exhibited upon recent vintages; the minerality more tangible. The palate is fresh and vibrant with silky smooth tannins, good acidity, lovely crescendo of flavours and great tension on the finish. This is a very fine Nénin, one that perhaps finally realizes the potential of its terroir. Tasted April 2012.

Drink 2016-2028 22% Cabernet Franc, 78% Merlot. 25% new oak. Intense black cherry colour. Again that graphite fragrance but really juicy and alive and fluid. Bright and full of life. 'Médoc style of Pomerol' suggests Steven Spurrier and that's quite a good description. Upright and tight and fresh. Very scented on the palate, long but elegant too. (JH) 13.7%

Powerful tannins and a distinct, solid core distinguish this very dark wine, showing sweet fruit notes with a blackberry juice flavor. It’s very fruity at the end. —R.V
