Mont-Pérat - Bordeaux 2022

The estate

"Humbled by mother Nature that guides us, let us capture the signals that she sends and follow her rhythm so that every move is done at the right time, in the right place." That is the motto of the Despagne family, a family of winegrowers from the Entre Deux Mers region and owners of Château Mont-Pérat. 

This very old estate, located in the village of Capian is composed of 4 little «mounts» in Capian, in the Entre Deux Mers appellation. The vines benefit from a patchwork of soils and orientations. The red wine of Château Mont-Pérat became famous worldwide when it appeared in the famous manga Les Gouttes de Dieu. 

Mont Pérat red 2022, another hot year

A mild and dry winter with a very early budburst.The spring is mild with very little rainfall, the flowering takes place serenely and we know that the harvest will be early: beginning on September 15th for the Merlots and we quickly move on to the Cabernet. At the end of September, all the reds were in the cellar. A new record for earliness. The harvest is abundant, healthy and beautiful. 

Tasting Notes 

A pure nose of delicate red fruits with smoky touches. The wine is silky, ample, balanced and harmonious. It expresses all the complexity of its terroir with aeration.

The 2022 vintage of Château Mont-Pérat is particularly impressive, offering more freshness than many other white wines from this vintage. With none of the heaviness or overripe fruit typical of some whites, it shows honeyed pears on the entry of the palate. The 25% Semillon imparts a beautiful roundness, while the limestone terroir adds a touch of subtle salinity, giving the wine both a refined dimension and satisfying depth. A truly recommendable white from the 2022 vintage.

Well judged, savoury edge to the fruit here, with white pepper and sage spice running through - this is a good value wine, one to look out for.

80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon Que de fraîcheur, d'enthousiasme et de précision dans le bouquet de Mont Pérat 2022 ! Le vin a un éclat fruité captivant appelant la fraîcheur ! En bouche, le vin se distingue par sa finesse et son harmonie. Il est soutenu par des tannins puissants, parfaitement intégrés, qui assurent non seulement son assise, mais également son tempérament et sa persistance. Un vin salivant, désaltérant et entraînant ! 2026-2037 92/100

The nose on the 2022 Mont-Pérat still needs to cohere and offer more fruit—this is a bit surly and backward. The palate is medium-bodied, spicy and peppery, with a touch of sapid black fruit and a finish that deserves better aromatics. Give it a year in bottle and keep fingers crossed.

A juicy, fruity and spicy red, showing cherries, strawberries and warm spices. Medium-bodied, this has velvety tannins and finely grained texture with a delicious stream of purple berries and a flavorful, persistent finish. Drink from 2026.

The 2022 Mont-Perat is soft, fruity and very easy to like. Succulent red cherry, spice, new leather, pipe tobacco and mocha are all knit together. This easygoing, charming red is a winner.

Supple and generous, this is full of crisp and gently sweet blackcurrant, cherry and plum fruits with a smooth, silky tannic structure that feels so effortless on the palate. Still concentrated and tannic no doubt, but balanced. This feels well worked and lifted with lively acidity keeping the fun factor and clear menthol freshness on the finish. Juicy and succulent, lots to enjoy. 3.65pH. Rolland & Associés consultants.

The 2022 vintage of Château Mont-Pérat boasts a mature and well-structured body, a testament to the winemaker's profound skills. Although the fruit aroma is slightly restrained in its current state as a young wine, the aroma structure is highly stable. With a gentle swirl of the glass, the rich scents of pine nuts, roasted sunflower seeds, and hazelnuts waft through the air. Undoubtedly, this is a superb Bordeaux Supérieur of exceptional quality.

The 2022 Mont-Pérat feels a bit disjointed on the nose, lacks a bit of cohesion. Dark plummy fruit and a touch of seaweed. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy tannins, pliant and smooth, with much more cohesion than the aromatics with silky finish. I suspect that the nose will cohere during barrel maturation and my score reflects that.

A great value and consistent estate from the Despagne family, this has an attractive ruby-plum colour, and ripe fruits that head towards black cherry and fresh fig, intense and shot through with liquorice and cocoa-bean. Flash of heat on the finish, but enjoyable.

La fraîcheur, l'intensité fruitée et la précision du bouquet signalent d'entrée une belle prestation de Mont-Pérat… ce qu'il a l'habitude de faire d'ailleurs ! Le vin se révèle de manière élégante. Il a du corps, des tannins qui se révèlent en crescendo et une fin de bouche rafraîchissante grâce à une pointe de salinité. Un vin fiable, réjouissant et sapide.

Always a good value, the 2022 Château Mont-Pérat sports a deep ruby/plum color as well as a perfumed bouquet of red and blue fruits, spring flowers, violets, and a chalky, mineral-like character. It's medium-bodied, has wonderful fruit, ripe tannins, and a good finish.

The 2022 Mont-Perat shows all the ripeness of the year in its racy personality. Super-ripe red cherry, mocha, spice and new leather all run through this decidedly exuberant Bordeaux. Nicely done. Drinking window : 2025-2032
