Mondotte - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2010

The Von Neipperg Family, a history intertwined with winegrowing

The custodian of some 800 years of winegrowing tradition, the talented Stephan von Neipperg manages the Bordeaux estates acquired by his fatherin 1971: Château Canon La Gaffelière et La Mondotte, 1er Grands Crus Classés B de Saint-Emilion, Clos de l'Oratoire, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé, Clos Marsalette, Pessac-Léognan, et le Château d'Aiguilhe, Castillon - Côte de Bordeaux

Ably assisted by a team of professionals, he has brought the wines from these châteaux to the pinnacle of quality. The upcoming generation, also deeply attached to the terroir, is preparing to perpetuate the family vocation...!

La Mondotte, the distinctive signature of an exceptional terroir.

La Mondotte's 4.5-hectares of vines grow on the clay-limestone plateau east of Saint-Emilion. This small gem of a vineyard possesses all the natural attributes of a Premier Grand Cru Classé. The terroir consists of very silty clay overlaying a rocky subsoil. This shallow, meagre soil induces excellent water regulation and is propitious to deep rooting. Fine natural drainage combined with outstanding sunshine make for early and complete ripening. The quality of La Mondotte's clay and the age of the vines (60 years on average) result in a wine that is profoundly marked by its terroir. It is silky, powerful, incomparably elegant, and has enormous minerality.

The 2010 La Mondotte has an open, airy bouquet with lifted red cherries and blackberry fruit, crushed rose petals and a touch of Chinese 5-spice. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, fleshy and slightly ferrous. What I appreciate is the harmony and silkiness towards the finish, something missing in some other Saint-Émilion crus. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal. Drink 2022-2035

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 La Mondotte has a lifted nose of prunes, baked black cherries and balsamic with touches of spice cake, hoisin and smoked meats. The concentrated, full-bodied palate has compelling freshness, sporting a firm, grainy texture and loads of earthy/savory layers, finishing with epic length.

Very lush, with roasted fig, dark boysenberry preserves and Black Forest cake flavors woven seamlessly together, stitched with bold spice notes and backed by a very racy graphite finish. Plenty big, but matches that easily with lovely purity and refinement through the finish. Best from 2015 through 2035. –JM

The 2010, a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc cropped at 20 hectoliters per hectare, is showing incredibly well, combining elegance, extraordinary creme de cassis and kirsch-like fruit, and notes of licorice, incense and vanillin in a fragrant, full-bodied, massively endowed style that is neither heavy nor overbearing. The freshness and overall precision of this wine reminds me stylistically of the brilliant 1998 as well as the 2000. This wine normally drinks well reasonably young, but I suspect the 2010 is going to require 5-7 years of cellaring and keep for 25-30+ years. This 12-acre vineyard was recently promoted in the 2012 St.-Emilion classifications from a grand cru to a premier grand cru classe, which was entirely justified by its performance since 1996. The estate is owned by the ever-reliable Stephan von Neipperg.

Gorgeous nose with a great concentration of aromas such as chocolate, blackberries and licorice. Opens up with wild strawberries and lots of orange blossom. Full and concentrated on palate with super silky tannins and beautiful dark fruit. Lots of new wood in the finish that needs to integrate. This shows the essence of Mondotte. Drink from 2017

2010: Owner Stefan von Neipperg and winemaking consultant Stephane Derenoncourt have fashioned a prodigious wine in 2010. This 11.5-acre gem of an estate sits on clay and limestone soils above Pavie and Pavie Decesse. The 2010's final blend was 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. It offers unctuously-textured mulberry, boysenberry and blueberry fruit intertwined with notions of espresso roast, toast, smoke and graphite. Full-bodied with a skyscraper-like mouthfeel, silky tannins and a tremendous finish, it will be drinkable in 3-4 years and evolve for 20-25 or more. Drink 2014-2029 (96-98+ points)

This is a rich, dense, concentrated style with gobs of tannins that coat one's mouth. Clearly a modern style St Emilion that will appeal to those who enjoy density and weighty flavours. For my palate, this wine is too dense with a thick texture and flavours that are over-ripe. There is enough substance there to conclude that it is a very good wine but more freshness and lightness would improve it substantially.

Full-bodied and powerful but beautifully textured. A touch of the 'iron fist in a velvet glove'. Dense, ripe fruit on the nose with minerally lift. Suave texture and bags of tannin. Long finish. Drink 2020-2035. (18.5 points)

This takes my breath away with dark fruits, blackberries, chocolate and spice. Full bodied, with super silky tannins and loads of beautiful dark fruits. Super silky and long. Made from 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.

Shows the density of the vintage, with the charcoal, cocoa and melted black licorice notes holding sway over a core of plum, fig and blackberry fruit. Dark and brooding now, but the core of fruit remains succulent and visible through the end, with serious minerality lurking in the background. Power combined with great cut. —J.M.

Toujours moins charmeur à ce stade que canon-la-gaffelière, le micro-cru de Stéphane von Neipperg en impose par son extraordinaire potentiel. Vin intense et volumineux, dense, ferme et structuré, grande allonge racée.

La Mondotte comes from a 4.5-hectare vineyard that produced wine in this vintage from the ridiculously low yields of 20 hectoliters per hectare from vines that average 70 years of age. 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc formed the assemblage that will be aged in 100% new oak. The wine reached 14.% alcohol, but with one of the lowest pH numbers I found in this vintage, 3.2, there is a lot of freshness and pop to this wine. Inky black with purple accents, licorice, stone, black fruit, jam, spice and mocha aromas rocket from the glass. Concentrated with luscious, ripe, opulent berries, this tannic wine is expansive on the palate, finishing with waves of fresh, pure black cherry liqueur, licorice and minerality. I asked Neipperg if producing a wine like this was risky. He responded with a smile saying, “No risk, no fun.” 96-98 Pts

Couleur sombre et belle. Le nezfin sent bon les fruits noirs. Bouche dense, très fruitée, avec un beau milieu et des tannins pleins de douceur. Sèveux et aromatique le vin s'achève puissant et long. Très réussi.
