Monbousquet - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2021

Perse Latitudes

After a first life in retail marketing, Gérard Perse decided in the 90's to satisfy his passion for wine. His future will be written in Saint-Emilion, his favorite place. He acquired the châteaux Pavie, 1er grand cru classé "A" of Saint-Emilion, Pavie-Decesse, Monbousquet, grands crus classés of Saint-Emilion and then Bellevue-Mondotte, still in Saint-Emilion, and Clos Lunelles in Castillon, Côtes de Bordeaux.

Because wine is enhanced both by the location and the dishes associated with it, the Perse family bought the Hostellerie de Plaisance, a mecca of gastronomy and lifestyle, which later became the Hotel de Pavie and its double michelin-starred restaurant, the Table de Pavie. Since 2020, the collaboration with Yannick Alleno, a leader of French gastronomy, symbolizes a new dynamic and the great ambition carried by the family.

The 2021 vintage, a show jumping for experienced rider

Control of pace, lenght of stride and the trajectory necessary to guarantee a clear round.. the 2021 growing season often felt like taking part in a show jumping event. While anticipation and flexibility were essential factors, knowledge and experience in the vineyard were required to get through this vine cycle's tricky climatic episodes of this vintage. Just like the rider who trains and prepares his mount for a jumping event, it is also the result of precise and regular work carried out over time by loyal and passionate teams.

Château Monbousquet, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé

In 1993, Chantal and Gérard Perse bought this historical estate. Its 34-hectare large vineyard is located on an exceptional terroir which, like Cheval Blanc or Figeac, has the characteristic of having partially gravelly soils. This typicity, offering warm soils, allows the Cabernets to flourish. Thus each vintage of Monbousquet has a significant proportion of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet-Sauvignon (30% in total in the blend of 2021).

The vineyard, impacted by the frost in 2021, required the full attention and expertise of the teams. In order to guarantee an optimal concentration of the berries, only the first buds were kept, despite the low volumes of wine produced in the end. Thanks to their high standards and their commitment, the Perse family has produced a balanced wine with fruit and freshness.

The 2021 Monbousquet is a very pretty wine. Crushed flowers, red cherry fruit, plum, mocha, licorice and rose petal are nicely lifted. In 2021, Monbousquet is delicate, savory and super-expressive, with a saline-tinged finish. Give it a few years.

Rather firm and dry throughout, the oak seems to be more under control than of late, and the feeling of tannin and skin-derived tension is also somewhat more relaxed. The fruit is a little muted, but there is a decent core of concentrated black cherry fruit, and this will inevitably even out over time. 16

A good amount of blackberry and black olive with a medium body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. Balanced and rather delicate.

An incredible achievement from this team, the 2021 Château Monbousquet comes from the lower plain, which was devastated due to frost and mildew, yet they've nevertheless brought more fruit and texture than those with the best terroirs in the appellation. Dark fruits, cassis, chocolate, and spice all give way to a medium to full-bodied, round, opulent beauty with solid tannins and a great finish. It's a gorgeous wine in the making.

The pure floral and fruity aromas, the full body, and the juicy taste, are all the beauties Monbousquet offers in the vintage of 2021. Unlike the berry notes of the hot vintages, the orchid aroma presented in this vintage is clearer, the alcohol is gentler, and the wine is smoother and easier to gulp. ???????????????????,???Monbousquet ?2021?????????????????????????,?????????????,??????,???????????

Fresh, juicy and sweet, with accents of flowers, black cherry, plum, creamy coffee and leafy herbs. The wine is medium-bodied, soft, forward and fruity, with a bit of dust in the tannins and in the chewy fruit finish. Close to 50% of the crop was lost to the frost. The wine blends 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13.67% ABV. Drink from 2023-2037. 90-92

The 2021 Monbousquet was picked from 29 September to 6 October and was the only property impacted by frost; therefore, they deselected the second generation buds at the end of August, so yields are just 18.55hL/ha. It has a clean, pure and perfumed bouquet with violet-infused black fruit, floral and more intense than many of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with a bit of hardness on the entry. Moderate depth, more compact than the aromatics suggest with a touch of black pepper towards the finish. This will need three or four years in bottle. 13.67% alcohol

The 2021 Monbousquet offers lovely fruit density in the mid-weight, slightly nervy style of the year. There's terrific energy and vibrancy running through the 2021. Rose petal, lavender, spice and mint perk up the finish. The 2021 is delicate, nuanced and super-classy.
