Mission Haut Brion Blanc - Pessac-Léognan 2021

La Mission Haut-Brion, a sacred charm

Crossed by the road that goes from Pessac to Talence, in the heart of the Graves appellation, the two properties stand facing one another like twin sisters, extremely close yet so very different. Linked by their history since 1540, these properties share also an remarkable terroir. La Mission Haut-Brion stands opposite Château Haut-Brion and shares the same vast terrace of superb gravelly soils, ideal for cultivating vines, already referred to as “Haut-Brion” on ancient maps and deeds. Its vineyard covers a total area of 29 hectares (approximately 72 acres). Almost 25 hectares are planted with red grape varieties and just over 4 hectares are devoted to white grape varieties.

The Dillon family purchased the estate in 1983 and immediately set to work on an ambitious renovation program for the property, including a number of technical enhancements designed to preserve and perpetuate its exceptional terroir as well as other embellishments, while taking care not to interfere with the special aura, charm and spirituality inhabiting the place.

Previously known as Château Laville Haut-Brion, Château La Mission Haut-Brion is a wine for the initiated. This dry white wine expresses all the distinctive features of a Graves wine, specific to Sémillon grown on these renowned terroirs.

The 2021 vintage

2021 has once again shown magic of La Mission Haut-Brion's terroir: after a cool Spring, its gravelly soils provide the vines with indirect sunshine, by their capacity to reverberate. In August, thanks to a warm, dry turn in the weather and cool temperatures at night, eagerly awaited ripeness gradually reaches all the early-ripening plots of La Mission Haut-Brion.

Every year, it is a decision-making process that takes into account the grapes’ ripeness and weather conditions which determines the date for the start of the harvests. In 2021, after a season of changeable weather, these two factors reach a fine balance and enable us to pick the grapes serenely. The berries are of extraordinary quality, both in terms of ripeness and aromatic characteristics, for all the grape varieties and they herald a truly magnificent vintage in white.

Tasting note

A magnificent colour that wavers between yellow and pale green. A very concentrated, fruity nose on aromas of lime. Swirling the wine increases the sensations and makes them more complex.
The first taste is very precise and flavoured. The wine progresses on the palate, full and clear-cut. It leaves a fleshy, deep and quite smooth sensation on the second taste and up to the finish.
This Mission Haut-Brion white is an incredible combination of tactile sensations on the palate, flavours and fragrances.

"The overall impression is of a Mission Haut-Brion Blanc that will live forever." Matthew Jukes

The 2021 La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc marries the natural energy of this cool year with lovely mid-palate creaminess and texture. Understated yet persistent, the 2021 presents a gorgeous display of pear, white flowers and mint, along with a subtle touch of oak that frames the finish. Today, the 2021 is quite a bit less expressive than it was en primeur. It was also bottled in May 2022 (versus May 2023 for the reds) and may be in a closed period, which is not unusual for wines from cold years. We shall see.

A fresh, incipiently complex bouquet of pear, grapefruit, freshly baked bread and wet stones prefaces the 2021 La Mission Haut-Brion, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy wine with a satiny attack that segues into a taut, structured mid-palate built around chalky dry extract, which lend this a more tightly-knit, mordant profile than the broader, fatter and more enveloping Haut-Brion Blanc. 94+

La Clarté was superb in 2021, but this wine possesses another level of intensity and also depth of flavour. The sensational weight of fruit is followed by epic acidity and an insanely long finish. The overall impression is of a wine that will live forever. Still, I am determined that, while it has the battery pack to do so, I want to impress on my readers that this wine ought to be drunk while it still has this prodigious spine-tingling acidity and rapier-sharp finish. This is an excellent vintage for elite dry whites, and this wine and its siblings are totally captivating. 18.5+

Peach and waxed-lemon character here. Some fennel and aniseed, too. Very fresh. Medium to full body with a round, creamy palate. A little closed for now at the end. 55.2% semillon and 44.8% sauvignon.

The 2021 Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc is a powerful, medium to full-bodied beauty with straight racy acidity as well as beautiful notes of tart melon, chalky minerality, charcoal, and white flowers. I love its mid-palate depth and balance, but it's going to require bottle age. It will be very long-lived. The blend is 55.2% Semillon and 44.8% Sauvignon, aging in 53% new barrels.

Pale colour. Bitter lemon, grapefruit aromas with verbena toasty notes. Sweet fruited wine with ample grapefruit, tonic water, leesy flavours, fine loose-knit chalky textures, some mid-palate viscosity and fresh linear acidity. Oak dominates the back palate but should settle. Attractive minerally wine with fresh chewing tobacco notes. Very tactile. 55% semillon, 45% sauvignon blanc. 55% new oak. 14% alc

The La Mission 2021 white is a historic masterpiece. I assume that this wine will prevail over the 2019 after aging. It smells like the Pulighy but tastes like the more powerful Meursault Les Perrières. The jelly-like fruity fragrances complement the beautiful scents of sophora flower, peach blossom, and apricot blossom. Even the high acidity of 2021 is harmonized by such complex flavors, making it more balanced and gentler. The oily texture of Sémillon seems to be milder and more elegant in this vintage, and the crispy mineral notes on the finish serve like a sharp arrow hidden behind the unctuous texture, the arrow of love from Cupid. Yes, you are bound to fall for it because it is so tempting. 2021???La Mission??????????????????????,??????????2019????????????Pulighy,????????????????Meursault Les Perrières????????????????????????????,??2021????????????????????????????????,?????????????????????????,????????????… ??,??????,?????,“??”?????

It takes no time at all to be reeled in here, starting with the nose. Crushed rocks, lemon verbena, flowers, pears, green apples, pears and tangerine rind pack the perfume. As good as the nose is, the palate is equal to the task of keeping you focused with its 60 second plus blast of sweet, juicy, rich, creamy, fresh, vibrant, energetic waves of fruits. This is clearly in contention for one of the best vintages of La Mission Haut Brion Blanc ever produced! Made from a blend of 55% Sauvignon Blanc, 45% Semillon, picking took place September 3, finishing September 10. 14.1% ABV. Drink from 2023-2060. 98-98

The 2021 La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc has a much more nuanced bouquet than the Haut-Brion Blanc this year with scents of Japanese yuzu, crushed stone, apple blossom and a touch of elderflower. The palate is very well balanced with a fine line of acidity, taut and fresh, vibrant and focused. This is more linear than the Haut-Brion and stricter, yet the precision on the finish is a wonder to behold. Fabulous.

The 2021 La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc is another super-expressive white in this range from the Clarence Dillon properties. Effusive floral and citrus notes lend brightness to this creamy, wonderfully inviting Blanc. Deep and textured, the 2021 finishes with real substance. Its a positively gorgeous wine by any measure. The Sémillon is especially vibrant in 2021.

55% Semillion, 45% Sauvignon Blanc.

Aromas of crisp orchard fruit, grapefruit oil, white flowers, pastry cream and freshly baked bread preface the 2021 La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc, a medium to full-bodied, ample and incisive wine that's satiny and chiseled, concluding with a long, mineral finish.

White chocolate, satsuma, lemon peel, peach and white flowers on the nose. So much intensity on the palate but in the purity of detail so you get the expansive flavour, succulent lemon and orange, zest grapefruit, crisp apple and delicate creamy patisserie elements all underpinned by a salinity and crushed stone texture. It's focused but so expansive as well, chiseled and detailed. A great combination where you get so much flavour in such delicate and defined packaging. Really very delicious and moreish.
