Michele Chiarlo - Barbaresco Faset - Barbaresco 2020

Michele Chiarlo, the iconic winemaker of Barolo

Michele Chiarlo has played a key role in the production of Italian fine wines and the international recognition of the Barolo appellation. His story as a wine producer began in 1956. From early on, he was convinced that the emancipation of the Piedmont hill has to be found in quality wines that highlight the greatest terroirs. In 1988, he bottled his first Cru of Barolo. Since then, he has never stopped fighting for this appellation and its great wines.

During his career, Michele Chiarlo has always followed his father's advice: "to be patient, make sacrifices but buy only vineyards in important positions". This led him to purchase the most prestigious crus in the Piedmont, in Barolo but also in Barbaresco.

Faset is among the most recognised areas of Barbaresco. The cru used to belong to the Conti Cocito di Neive in the 1900s. Now it is divided between various owners. The south facing vineyards form a large and steep slope, with the west side facing towards the Tanaro River. The parcel from which Michele Chiarlo's Barbaresco Faset is produced covers only 1ha of vines and is located on the top of the hill.

The 2020 Vintage:

Faset 2020 is charasterized by a very expressive nose with notes of dried rose petals, small red fruits and an elegant hint of minerals combined with fine spices. It has a great structure, elegant and welcoming with minerality and the dense texture of fine tannins.

The 2020 Barbaresco Faset is packed with wild cherry, mocha, new leather and sweet spice. This round, caressing Barbaresco offers tons of immediacy, making it a fine choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years. Lifted floral and spice-infused aromatics give this supple, silky Barbaresco plenty of appeal.

The Michele Chiarlo 2020 Barbaresco Faset delivers a pretty ensemble of wild berry or raspberry aromas with rose, lavender bud, light cinnamon stick and licorice root. These various elements are well integrated and balanced, showing smoothly over a polished, mid-weight mouthfeel.

The 2020 Barbaresco Faset expresses a more amplified personality, with aromas of licorice, cracked peppercorn, leather, and raspberry liqueur. Angular and medium bodied, it has snappy notes of sour cherry and turned soil, with ripe tannins. I would hold off another 6-12 months and drink 2025-2037.

Wild flowers and red summer berries on the nose, smells expressive and lively, open and appealing. Bright and shining in the glass, clear and clean, this is direct and sleek with a scintillating acidity that stays the right side of being too sharp. Tannins come in pretty quickly and just shut down the fruit persistence at this point but they're well integrated with a juicy, sapidity as well as firmness that gives the overall life, structured and frame. Cheerful and characterful with a really gorgeous freshly-picked strawberry acidity and lovely lick of wet stone, graphite salinity that gives the chalky, tongue scraping feeling towards the end. I like this a lot.

Vibrant light ruby colour, welcoming and delicate in structure, with savoury broth and soy along with brushed leather, raspberry and red cherry fruits and gentle spices. This is elegant and charming, can be enjoyed now or over the next five to 10 years, fresh acidities give an oyster shell mouthwatering signoff. Vines planted 1965, harvest October 1, just 1ha of vines so completed in one day. Winemaker Stefano Chiarlo.
