Meyney - Saint-Estèphe 2023

Château Meyney, the "Virtuosity"

Since 1625, the estate has known only 4 owners in 400 years. In 2004 Crédit Agricole purchased this estate, ideally located in Saint-Estèphe, between the vines of Calon Ségur and Montrose.

In 2021, the "Virtuosity" project is launched: Contraction of 3 ideas at the heart of the estate's commitment, Green - Virtuous - Virtuoso, this project is symbolized by the launch of the conversion to Organic Farming. It also allows the recognition of many virtuous initiatives: the viti-pastoralism with the housing of 4 oxen, the planting of hedges and the installation of beehives.

The 2023 Vintage: Delicate, Juicy and Generous

Although the vineyard teams were challenged throughout the vegetative cycle by changeable weather, our third year of conversion to organic farming for Château Meyney remains a success in terms of both quality and quantity. The new optical sorting system enabled us to make a demanding and precise selection of the Merlot and Petit Verdot grapes, while the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes benefited from magnificent weather conditions, in particular the wide temperature variations between night and day during the harvest.

Tasting notes

Château Meyney's 2023 vintage is generous, juicy and delicate on the palate. This wine subtly combines delicacy, intensity and elegance.

The 2023 Meyney has an open, expressive nose with more red fruit than its appellation peers, raspberry and wild strawberry mixed with loam, later hints of blackberry. The palate is medium-bodied, with grainy tannins on the entry. Fine density, showing more grip than in barrel, with an earthy and quite sustained finish. There is promise here.

Crunchy dark fruit with elderberries, herbal notes and licorice. The chiseled palate is medium-bodied, showing linear acidity complemented by a crisp edge. A blend of 50% cabernet sauvignon, 38% merlot and 12% petit verdot. Drinkable now with some aeration, but better from 2028.

Séduisant par son velouté de texture digne des meilleurs crus, avec une grande longueur. Comme d’habitude, Meyney est une priorité pour l’amateur.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Meyney needs a lot of shaking to wake up scents of cassis and fresh raspberries giving way to an undercurrent of sassafras, cedar, and dried herbs. The medium-bodied palate is lively and light on its feet, with soft, well-managed tannins and a spicy kick to the finish. The blend is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, and 12% Petit Verdot.

Meyney (St-Estèphe; 58% Cabernet Sauvignon; 29% Merlot; 13% Petit Verdot; tasted from a sample sent to me in Bordeaux). A super wine from Meyney, with grace, elegance, charm, appellation and terroir typicity, and substance. A lovely harmony between red and darker berry fruits, a little plum skin too. White and black pepper, a little saffron, beeswax and petunia. On the palate this has quite a broad frame for the vintage. This helps to reveal the crystalline purity of the mid-palate. Long and glossy on the finish, where a nice graphite mineral note intermingles with the sensation of chewing on grape skins. Cool and refreshing. Another great success from an habitual over-performer (though it’s less surprising when you look on the map and see where the vineyard is located!).

Black currants, flowers, tobacco, and mint add to the perfume. The fruits are chewy, dense, ripe, and lifted. There is a vibrance in the blackberry, tobacco, and herb-filled finish. Drink from 2028-2045. 91-93 Pts.

Often a benchmark wine for me in a vintage, and it is a good sign for the Left Bank in 2023 that Meyney is tasting great. A punch of inky plum and blackberry fruit, good lift and freshness, plenty of tannic grip, an excellent wine. A buy. CA Grands Crus owners.

The 2023 Meyney is terrific. Silky and polished, the 2023 shows a side of Meyney I have not seen before. There's also terrific freshness and overall brightness. Dark red plum, blood orange, chalk, mint and dried herbs are all beautifully delineated. More than anything else, I admire the wine's poise.

The 2023 Meyney is surprisingly backward on the nose with blackberry, kirsch, touches of black pepper and loamy aromas. It remains understated in the glass yet gains purity. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins. Maybe a little conservative in style, it stays within the confines of the vintage yet feels harmonious. What is missing is just a bit of grip and density on the finish. Fine.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Nuanc- es of cassis and mint, fresh black cherry, fine herbal savouriness, inviting bouquet. Medium body, fine red heart cherry, round tannins, mineral-salty finish, lively style.

Aromas of dark berries, cassis, vanilla pod and spicy new oak introduce the 2023 Meyney, a medium-bodied, lean and compact wine with a somewhat drying finish.

A very solid Meyney with a firm tannin frame that holds the wine together. Medium body. Juicy finish.
