Mazeyres (BIO-ORGANIC) - Pomerol 2023

Cha^teau Mazeyres, a living and historic Pomerol wine

Cha^teau Mazeyres is on a Gallo-Roman site with roots dating back to the second century BC. It is surrounded by 25.5 hectares of vines, which have been cultivated using biodynamics since 2012 and certified since 2018. In 2020, a new era began when the Guillard family, who, after acquiring Château Fonroque in 2017, purchased the estate and thus reaffirmed their interest in fine wines. This move strengthens a fruitful and complementary collaboration with Alain Moueix, who has been working at Château Mazeyres for three decades.

Biodynamics made a vital contribution to ensuring that the vineyard’s growth went hand in hand with rising quality levels and increasing fame. The resulting wines were lively and elegant, and enjoyed growing recognition.

The 2023 Vintage: 

Climatic conditions: 

In 2023, the winter was slightly warmer than usual with normal precipitation. Budbreak occurred at the end of March and frost damage in early April was limited. Flowering was observed at the end of May, but phenological stages were heterogeneous. From June, heat and storms favored high mildiou pressure, but the team was able to preserve the harvest through biodynamic practices. In July, dry and hot conditions set in, and veraison was slow. Harvesting began in early September under the sun and was done plot by plot for perfect maturity. The first juices were rich in phenols and acidity, and grape volumes were satisfactory. 2023 represents a high-quality vintage.

The 2023 Mazeyres is missing a little presence and depth on the nose, quite "airy" in style with blackberry and smoky scents. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly disjointed, angular tannins, and there is an element of greenness that crops up on the finish. This showed far better from barrel, so I wonder what happened?

Plums, berries, roasted spices, wet leaves and a lactic undertone on the nose. Juicy and fluid, with a medium body and a firm finish. 88% merlot, 10% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. From biodynamically grown grapes. Try from 2027.

Mazeyres hat sich der Frische verschrieben und zeigt dies mit Noten von Kräutern und roten Beeren, ergänzt durch einen Hauch von Holunder. Der Wein ist charmant und leicht cremig im Auftakt, wird aber von seinen Tanninen und einer strukturierenden Säure gestützt. Die Säure verleiht dem aromatischen Ausdruck und dem lang anhaltenden Abgang Nachdruck. Ein schmackhafter, feiner und frischer Wein!

The 2023 Château Mazeyres checks in as 86% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot. It's another medium-bodied, charming, nicely balanced wine in the vintage that has perfumed cherry and red plum fruits, some spicy, savory herb nuances, ripe tannins, and a beautiful finish. This charming, supple, satisfying Pomerol has plenty to love, and I suspect it will drink nicely right out of the gate.

Black cherries, espresso, plums, and chocolate show easily here in the perfume. The wine is medium-bodied, forward, fresh, round, edgy, and vibrant, with a bright, red pit fruit, and chocolate note, with a refreshing touch of spearmint in the finish. Drink from 2027-2035. 89-91 Pts.

The 2023 Mazeyres has an elegant bouquet: scents of raspberry and wild strawberry, with veins of sous-bois and truffle emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with comparatively light tannins. This has a pinch of black pepper toward the finish—quite a cerebral Pomerol that will drink young, yet it has the substance to age.

Dark ruby, purple reflections, brightening at the rim. A hint of bergamot, dark for- est berries, fresh cherries, inviting bouquet. Juicy, elegant, sweet berry fruit, fine tannins, good freshness, mineral and persistent, salty and lemony, good length and certain ageing potential.
