Mazeyres (BIO-ORGANIC) - Pomerol 2022

Cha^teau Mazeyres, a living and historic Pomerol wine

Cha^teau Mazeyres is on a Gallo-Roman site with roots dating back to the second century BC. It is surrounded by 25.5 hectares of vines, which have been cultivated using biodynamics since 2012 and certified since 2018. In 2020, a new era began when the Guillard family, who, after acquiring Château Fonroque in 2017, purchased the estate and thus reaffirmed their interest in fine wines. This move strengthens a fruitful and complementary collaboration with Alain Moueix, who has been working at Château Mazeyres for three decades.

Biodynamics made a vital contribution to ensuring that the vineyard’s growth went hand in hand with rising quality levels and increasing fame. The resulting wines were lively and elegant, and enjoyed growing recognition.

The 2022 vintage

2022, the vintage of all extremes.

The frost at the end of March and beginning of April with many days of struggle will cause some damage here and there. The vintage will be exceptionally hot and dry from May. Mid-flowering, rapid and homogeneous, is observed around May 20th.
The first wave of heat is particularly early, In mid-June, when the grapes are getting bigger, resulting in low berry size. On September 1, the very early harvest (almost beating the 2011 record of August 31) began under the sun. The cool nights allow the fruity character of the grapes to be preserved. The small size of the berries and the tannic richness of the skins are markers of the vintage. The teams were very careful to maintain a balance between the richness and quality of the tannins and the freshness which is now the marker of the wines of Château Mazeyres.
2022 will be remembered as the year of all excesses and the wines of Mazeyres will only be more valuable in our eyes.

The biodynamic approach has greatly benefited Château Mazeyres, with intense and delicate aromas of cherry and blueberry, without any sign of over-ripeness. This sandy-soil Pomerol wine does not reveal any weakness in the 2022 vintage, instead winning hearts with its solid yet gentle tannins. This free-spirited and approachable expression is not common in Pomerol. I eagerly anticipate its even more outstanding performance after bottling.

Like the floral aromatics here, followed by raspberry puree, just the right amount of rustic to make it approachable and not overly sleek, has juice and character, and is an enjoyable wine. Guillard family owners since 2020, still with Alain Moueix as director. 18hl/h yield, harvest September 1 to 22, 30% in barrel, 20% in cement edges, 30% in large oak cask and 20% in amphora.Certified organic and biodynamic.

The 2022 Château Mazeyres is solid and well worth purchasing. Based on 78% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, it has a juicy, fresh, lively style in its mulberry and darker plum-like fruit, and it’s forward, medium-bodied, and easygoing. It should drink well for 10-12 years.

The 2022 Mazeyres really seems to have gone into its shell on the nose, missing a little presence. The palate is medium-bodied with sorbet-fresh red fruit, quite citrus-like for a Pomerol. This is open-knit with kirsch and orange rind notes toward the finish. It becomes quite spicy in the glass. This is a fine albeit relatively early-drinking wine.

A nicely structured, savory and textured Pomerol. The nose exhibits blueberries, mulberries, dark plums, dried violets, wet floor and mild spices. It’s medium- to full-bodied with fine, firm tannins. Plenty of graphite character on the palate with a seductive frame of berries and spices mingling harmoniously. Well-driven with a long, focused finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink after 2027.

The 2022 Mazeyres is aromatic, bold and racy. Crushed flowers, sage, mint, spice and licorice race out of the glass. Mazeyres is a blend of sites, many of them in cooler spots within Pomerol, which was certainly a help in 2022. As a result, this retained terrific energy. Lifted floral and savory notes extend the clean, bracing finish.

Spritzy and a bit reductive on the palate, strongly herbal and softly spiced, feels like the vines struggled a bit with tobacco, clove, cinnamon flavours. Harvest 1-22 September. Yield of 18hl/ha.

The 2022 Mazeyres has a sorbet-like freshness and vibrancy on the nose: red plum and cassis scents, becoming more floral in the glass. The palate is sweet and candied on the entry, quite spicy, a splash of balsamic toward the finish that just presents a nagging dryness at this stage.

The 2022 Mazeyres is deep garnet-purple in color. Baked plums and dried mulberries scents open the nose with underlying wafts of fried herbs and unsmoked cigars. The medium-bodied palate is a little thin and chewy with an herbal, rugged finish.

The 2022 Château Mazeyres is a full-bodied, rich, nicely concentrated Pomerol that stays balanced. Ripe black and blue fruits, chocolate, and leafy tobacco are just some of the nuances, and it has quality tannins, and again, a pure, balanced style. It should be outstanding.

Lush, round, and fruity, the wine is on the ripe side of the style range, with a hint of over ripeness in its layers of lush, dark, plums, figs, and black cherries, with their licorice, espresso, chocolate and slight raisin edge. Drink from 2025-2032.

Picked between 1 and 19 September, the 2022 Mazeyres offers up aromas of minty dark berries, licorice and tobacco leaf, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy palate that's supple, gourmand and enveloping. This charming organically and biodynamically farmed Pomerol is produced by Alain Mouiex.

Fresh and bright with juicy fruit and hazelnuts, with a little bit of herbs. Full and layered. Watching the elevage on this.
