Mauvesin Barton - Moulis 2021

The Barton Dynasty

What makes the history of the Barton family so fascinating is how each generation has left its mark and added its stone to this exceptional heritage.
In 1722, Thomas Barton left his native Ireland to settle in Bordeaux. He founded a wine trading company and, above all, a family, or rather a dynasty, which to this day remains the longest family continuity among the classified growths.
In 1821, Hugh Barton, Thomas's grandson, bought Château Langoa, then in 1826, Château Léoville. Thanks to his talent and efficiency, the two Saint-Julien estates, renamed Léoville Barton and Langoa Barton, were respectively classified 2nd and 3rd Grand Cru Classé in 1855. The Barton family is today one of the only families in Bordeaux that still owns its properties since the 1855 classification.

Many generations have succeeded one another, like guardians of the vineyards, but it is Anthony Barton, the gentleman of the Médoc, who has raised the reputation of Château Léoville-Barton to its current international level.
Lilian Barton-Sartorius, the 9th generation, now manages the different properties. In 2011, she brought Château Mauvesin into the family fold, which was later renamed Château Mauvesin Barton. Today, Mélanie and Damien, 10th generation, are involved in the development of the different family wineries, thus perpetuating the legacy of Thomas Barton.

Château Mauvesin Barton, the elegance of a wine, the passion of a family

Château Mauvesin Barton has a 47-hectare vineyard located in the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation. Its parcels, offering extraordinary diversity, each allow the grapes to reveal their most subtle aromas: A clay-limestone soil for the Merlot and then fine gravel for the Cabernet Sauvignon.

In 2013, Mélanie Barton Sartorius, the family's first winemaker, joined the adventure. With a solid background, she took over the technical direction shortly after and launched a replanting program of the vineyard. Today she produces elegant and balanced wines.

The 2021 Mauvisin Barton has a well-defined bouquet with brambly red fruit, crushed iris flower and a hint of cinnamon. Very classic in style, it’s nicely focused with neatly integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with more tension than the Deuxième

A fresh, unadorned style, with red currant and damson plum notes infused with black tea and sandalwood accents. Stylish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2029. 5,300 cases made.  –JM

This classic Mauvesin has generous, pure, resonant fruit and a seamless palate. You are treated to a smooth, ripe mid-palate that shows no sign of introversion nor of a willingness to be bigger, wider, hotter or longer. It is perfectly balanced and nicely refreshing, and the fruit theme of black cherries and plums is enticing. 16.5

Nez précis, fruit défini, jolies notes florales et grillées, trame élégante, fondante, avec un grain fin et beaucoup de fraîcheur en finale. Bien vinifié et harmonieux. Aucun excès, très naturel.

Medium-bodied, the wine is earthy, savory and herbal, with strong underbrush and roasted, herb leaning on the palate and in the crisp finish. Drink this on the young side. Drink from 2023-2029. 86-88

The 2021 Mauvesin Barton was picked from 30 September until 11 October and aged in one-third new oak. There is more Cabernet this year (52%) due to frost damage. It has a vibrant nose with black cherries, bilberry and perhaps more floral scents than I have encountered apropos previous vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, not a deep or powerful Moulis, yet well-balanced and surfeit with freshness, a pleasant bitter swerve on the finish.

The 2021 Mauvesin Barton, the Barton family's Moulis, is a soft, fruity wine to drink now and over the next decade. Sweet red cherry fruit, cedar, pipe tobacco and incense give this mid-weight Moulis lovely aromatic presence.

Mittleres Rubinrot.
