Mauvesin Barton - Moulis 2019

The Barton dynasty, a fascinating story

What makes the history of the Barton family so fascinating is how each generation has left its mark and added its stone to this exceptional heritage. Settled in Bordeaux since 1722, the Barton family is one of the only families left in the Médoc that is still at the head of its properties since the 1855 classification.

Lilian Barton-Sartorius, the worthy successor of her father, Anthony Barton, now manages the three estates: Château Léoville Barton (2nd Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Julien), Langoa Barton (3ème Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Julien) and Mauvesin Barton (Moulis en Médoc). Her children, Mélanie and Damien, representing the 10th generation, are involved in the development of the family properties, thus keeping this remarkable legacy alive.

Château Mauvesin Barton, the passion of the Barton family

Château Mauvesin Barton has a 47-hectare vineyard located in the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation. Its parcels, offering extraordinary diversity, each allow the grapes to reveal their most subtle aromas: A clay-limestone soil for the Merlot and then fine gravel for the Cabernet Sauvignon.

In 2011, Lilian Barton-Sartorius brought Château Mauvesin Barton in to the family estate's portfolio. In 2013, Mélanie Barton Sartorius, the family's first winemaker, joined the adventure. With a solid background, she took over the technical direction shortly after and launched a replanting program of the vineyard. Today she produces elegant and balanced wines.

The 2019 Château Mauvesin Barton has more dark fruits, structure, and length, and it's a little more serious as well. Still, the tannins are nicely polished, and the balance is spot on. It's going to benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and keep for a decade.

The 2019 Mauvesin Barton is gorgeous. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, tobacco, mint and spice lend nuance to this gracious, beautifully lifted Moulis. The 2019 is understated yet wonderfully expressive and very tasty.

The 2019 Mauvesin Barton has a straightforward, classic, slightly leafy bouquet that unfurls nicely with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a piquant entry, fine acidity and a supple finish that feels more Merlot than Cabernet Sauvignon.

Delicate florality to this, smells wonderful, bursting with flowers and black fruits - incredibly welcoming. Lovely acidity on the palate, you can feel this is lively with great energy and drive pushing the red fruit flavours across the palate. The tannins are soft but they are mouth coating and really do mask a lot of what is going on right now. A big mouthful but with brightness and verve underneath. Lovely long length and good persistency and freshness. One to seek out and hold on to.

Fruits frais, belles notes florales, des épices également. Bouche sur la tension, une belle gestion de l'acidité et des tanins un peu fermes en finale. Reste toutefois une très belle réussite dans le millésime.
