Maucaillou - Moulis 2022

The terroirs that make up the 90 hectares of Château MAUCAILLOU, are composed of superb outcrops of quaternary alluvial deposits, largely from the layer of Guntz gravel from the Garonne which is at the origin of the Grands Crus Classés of the Médoc.

It is this gravel, whose gleaming surface reflects the sun’s rays up on to the bunches, that enables the grapes to reach full maturity, which is an essential condition for producing great wine.

According to Philippe Dourthe, owned of Château Maucaillou, the philosophy of estate can be resumed as:

"Grand Cru Classé, cannot,
Cru Bourgeois, deigns not,
Château MAUCAILLOU, is."

Since the 2021 vintage, Château Maucaillou has performed more relaxedly, and the use of oak barrels has become more proficient. The aromas of mocha and coffee are still strong, but the nose structure is more balanced. Thanks to the clay-limestone soil, the once intense body has softened considerably. While the tannins are still a bit firm right after bottling, they will begin to soften and open up after 3 to 5 years of aging.

This is an exuberant vintage at Maucaillou, showing width and depth through the mid palate, with silky tannins. Has charm and impact, raspberry bud and tight tannins on the finish.

The 2022 Château Maucaillou is based on 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot that spent 18 months in barrel. It has a slightly modern, well-oaked nose of darker currants, sappy flowers, and violets. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Moulis that has plenty of richness and depth, building tannins, and a good finish. Give it a few years.

The 2022 Maucaillou has held on to its open and generous nose, featuring finely delineated aromas of red berry fruit laced with scents of spice box and a little cumin. The palate is medium-bodied and to be frank, is a bit of a letdown after the promising aromatics. It's strict, bitter and missing some flair and personality on the finish. Maybe it will improve with bottle age?

A refined Moulis-en-Medoc, showing smoky berries, cassis and a touch of paprika, spearmint, bergamot and licorice. Even and medium-bodied with a nice structure of firm, skeletal tannins and a linear, fine-boned finish of good length. Slightly more bones than fruit flesh here, delivering fluidity and elegance. Balanced but not ambitious. Drink from 2025.

The 2022 Maucaillou offers notable immediacy. Black fruit, leather, chocolate, spice and licorice are front and center. Ideally, It would be nice to see a bit more persistence on the mid-palate and finish, with a touch more freshness as well.

Maucaillou 2022 (Moulis-en-Médoc; 60% Cabernet Sauvignon; 40% Merlot; a final yield of 35 hl/ha; 13.5% alcohol; re-tasted at the UGC press tasting). Quite toasty on the nose, with the oak reinforcing the subtle florality (a little less so at the UGC). Black cherries and mulberries and plenty of acidity, the tannins just a little rustic towards the finish and, if never dry, then shading towards a coarser grain. An impressive wine, but I’m not sure I’d really pick is as coming from Moulis. The oak returns on the finish and dries this just a touch.

Fruit-forward, ripe and plush but also cool and fresh giving a great balance between power and focus. I like the ripe, almost chewy tannins because there's purity and expansion, a wide frame and long length with finesse and a sense of refinement. Clearly powerful and bold but this expression really works and marries the concentrated fruit, high acidity, fine tannins and structure really well. Very enjoyable and captivating even now.

Since the 2021 vintage, Château Maucaillou has performed more relaxedly, and the use of oak barrels has become more proficient. The aromas of mocha and coffee are still strong, but the smell structure and hierarchy are more balanced. Thanks to the addition of clay-limestone soil, the rich body becomes softer. Although the tannins on the finish are a bit abrupt, it is believed that after bottling, it will exhibit a better silhouette.

The 2022 Maucaillou has a perfumed bouquet with blackberry and mulberry fruit, just a touch of spicebox in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft opening that belies a more structured middle. Lightly spiced with black pepper and cloves, I seek more detail to come through on the oaky finish.

Deep crimson. Ripe black cherry, roasted walnut, vanilla aromas. Inky deep with attractive ripe black cherry, mulberry fruits, fine cedary textures and slightly dominant roasted walnut notes. Finishes brambly/ sinewy at the finish. (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot 40-60% new oak)

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2022 Maucaillou offers up delicate notes of crushed red and black currants, warm plums, and pencil shavings, plus wafts of lavender and underbrush. The medium-bodied palate is tight-knit and refreshing, with fine-grained tannins and a mineral-laced finish.

The 2022 Maucaillou is deep, savory and super-complex. Dried herbs, leather, licorice, tobacco, incense and dried flowers give this heady Moulis tons of nuance to complement its intense, resonant fruit. Maucaillou packs a tremendous punch. Drinking window : 2027-2042

Forward, round, sweet, and fruity, with a core of black plums, espresso, cocoa, and tobacco from start to finish. The medium-bodied wine is round, soft, and ready for prime time drinking on release. Drink from 2025-2037.

The 2022 Maucaillou is a Cabernet-driven blend with 42% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot. Its bouquet exhibits aromas of spices, licorice, cherry and blueberry with hints of toasty oak. On the palate, this fruit-driven wine is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and velvety with a slightly austere finish. 87 - 89+
