Maucaillou - Moulis 2010

The terroirs that make up the 90 hectares of Château MAUCAILLOU, are composed of superb outcrops of quaternary alluvial deposits, largely from the layer of Guntz gravel from the Garonne which is at the origin of the Grands Crus Classés of the Médoc.

It is this gravel, whose gleaming surface reflects the sun’s rays up on to the bunches, that enables the grapes to reach full maturity, which is an essential condition for producing great wine.

According to Philippe Dourthe, owned of Château Maucaillou, the philosophy of estate can be resumed as:

"Grand Cru Classé, cannot,
Cru Bourgeois, deigns not,
Château MAUCAILLOU, is."

Ripe plums and berries with hints of flower. Full body, chewy tannins and a long finish. Needs time to soften but beautiful. Better in 2015.

A Burgundian style of wine with notes of sweet and sour cherries, pomegranates, spice box and damp earth, this medium-bodied, pleasant wine should be drunk over the next 5-6 years.

Acidity and fresh fruit are out of balance with smoky wood. The wine will need to integrate in the coming months, although all the elements are there.

2010: The 2010's deep plum/ruby color is accompanied by a subtle note of minerality intermixed with fresh acids, sweet tannin and excellent concentration, suggesting this wine should drink nicely for 10-12 years. Drink 2011-2023

A graceful medium weight wine with nice flavours but slightly weak mid palate and length. It is a well made Maucaillou made for fairly early drinking.

Nicely fragrant Cabernet fruit, quite lifted and elegant but could have more depth. Drink 2014-18. (15.5 points)

Tasted at the Cru Bourgeois primeur tasting. This has good intensity on the nose with blackberry, oyster shell and dark plum, showing nice poise and focus. The palate is medium-bodied, slightly chewy on the entry, good weight with a firm masculine, cedar-infused finish. Fine.

Nez fin, jolie matière, élégance évidente, rien de forcé, soigné et précis mais sans recherche particulière de grandeur. Agréable assez vite.

Mid crimson. Very sweet and voluptuous start and then just the merest hint of sandpaper and great, supple, ripe tannins. The merest hint of greenness on the finish but overall pretty lovely. Fresh and ‘feminine’ though there is no shortage of tannin! What a good Maucaillou. Drink 2017-2026
