Maucaillou - Moulis 2009

The terroirs that make up the 90 hectares of Château MAUCAILLOU, are composed of superb outcrops of quaternary alluvial deposits, largely from the layer of Guntz gravel from the Garonne which is at the origin of the Grands Crus Classés of the Médoc.

It is this gravel, whose gleaming surface reflects the sun’s rays up on to the bunches, that enables the grapes to reach full maturity, which is an essential condition for producing great wine.

According to Philippe Dourthe, owned of Château Maucaillou, the philosophy of estate can be resumed as:

"Grand Cru Classé, cannot,
Cru Bourgeois, deigns not,
Château MAUCAILLOU, is."

A little lean but some pretty dried fruits and spices. Full body, chewy tannins and a medium finish. Disjointed now, but will improve with age. Better in 2015.

Rounded and plush, but focused, with supple red currant, blackberry and plum fruit, offset with hints of vanilla and a nice tug of earth on the finish. Drink now through 2014. 29,280 cases made. –JM

A one-dimensional, simple, straightforward wine with good red and black fruits, some herbs and earth, the superficiality of this wine is apparent on the palate as it lacks concentration and should therefore be consumed over the next 7-8 years.

Bright purple-ruby. Highly floral nose offers scents of lavender, lily, violet, blackberry, cedar and graphite. Lush, rich and sweet on entry, with rich black fruit and smoky underbrush flavors given adequate lift by lively acidity. Finishes pure, clean and long, with a trace of warmth, lingering notes of minerals and coffee, and a healthy dose of youthfully aggressive tannins. This wine will need at least a few years to resolve its tannins but should prove to be a splendid Maucaillou.

Tasted at Vintex. This has a well defined red-berried nose with just a hint of apricot and orange sorbet...very Margaux like and it improves with aeration. The palate however, is delectable from the start: beautiful balance at the core of which are filigree tannins and a supremely well poised red-berried finish. This is a superb Maucaillou. A second sample flirted with over-ripeness, but showed sufficient delineation on the finish to remain positive about its development. Tasted March 2010.

Smoothly polished wine, lovely blackberry jelly flavors and sweet fruit. Ripe, juicy with wood and a potentially good structure.

Relatively pale. Very obvious sweet oak on the nose – something one rarely comes across nowadays. Sinewy and jagged – very much a sum of disparate parts. Jagged tannins on the finish. Drink 2016-2024
