Marquis de Terme - Margaux 2018

Marquis de Terme, a shining Grand Cru

The origins of this wine date back to the 15th century, but its name will be given in 1762, by François de Peguilhan, Marquis de Terme. The Seneclauze family owns the property since 1935. In 2009, Ludovic David is appointed as General Manager of Château Marquis de Terme. This is the starting point of a new era for this 40-hectare large estate, located in on Margaux's typical gravelly soils. Numerous innovations and a new dynamism are brought to enhance the exceptional terroir of the Marquis de Terme wines.

The estate combines with excellence the rigour of work and ancestral know-how with creativity, lightness and open-mindedness. The estate's teams have at heart to create exceptional wines and to radiate the Marquis de Terme state of mind.

The 2018 Marquis de Terme was picked from September 26 to October 15. The nose has opened up since I last tasted it. It is rich and opulent in style, with black cherries and touches of burnt toast mixed with black pepper. A little glossy? The palate is medium-bodied, with layers of toasty black fruit laced with clove and white pepper. It is dense and broad-shouldered, though it misses the elegance of the 2015 and 2016. I tasted it at the Marquis de Terme vertical.

The 2018 Château Marquis De Terme also showed better than on release. Based on 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot, it has a ripe, round, medium to full-bodied profile as well as gorgeous currant and mulberry fruits supported by ample chocolate, truffle, and leafy herb-like aromas and flavors. The tannins here are beautiful, and it has an expansive mouthfeel and a great finish. It's another beautiful wine that I'd be thrilled to drink any time over the coming 15-20 years.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Marquis de Terme comes skipping out of the glass with bright, cheery notes of kirsch, black raspberries and blackcurrant pastilles, followed by hints of aniseed, damp soil and bouquet garni. The medium-bodied palate is delicately styled with just 13% declared alcohol and plenty of youthful, dried herbs accenting red and black fruits, supported by approachable, chewy tannins and bags of freshness, finishing with a lively lift. It's a great example of a fresher style for this vintage.

The 2018 Marquis de Terme is a promising wine. The aromatics are quite expressive while the palate is pliant and racy. At the same time, those components feel like they each live in their own little words, which leaves the wine feeling disjointed. Hopefully time in bottle will help things come together.

Smoke, black raspberries, espresso, wet earth, truffle, plum and currants create a fabulous nose. Lush, silky, polished, soft and sweet, the fruit tastes as good as it feels on the palate and in the finish.

The 2018 Marquis de Terme has an open, nicely defined bouquet of blackberry, tobacco and graphite aromas, though I would like more intensity and depth. It feels quite airy compared to its peers. The well-defined palates delivers crisp acidity, plenty of crunchy black fruit and a touch of pencil lead toward the almost Pauillac-like finish. I like the palate much more than the aromatics at this early stage, but maybe it will improve with bottle age.

Fresh and racy in feel, with a zip of acidity driving through the middle, lending support to the mix of blackberry, plum and cassis flavors. Dried anise, alder and lilac accents add range on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2022 through 2034. 12,165 cases made. –JM

Finale persistante.

Perfumed and polished aromas of stewed blackcurrants, cherries, cloves, dark chocolate, lavender and musk. It’s full-bodied with firm, fine-grained tannins. Sleek, refined finish. Pretty strength with elegance. Try from 2024.

The 2018 Marquis de Terme has a generous bouquet of copious black cherry, cassis and iodine aromas, just missing the delineation and focus of some of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins, rather reserved in style and lacking a little cohesion and depth toward the finish. This is a more understated Margaux considering the growing season, but I would have liked more substance on the back palate. I must admit that I was expecting more from this wine. Maybe it is saving something for when it is in bottle.

Fruité explosif, notes rares de pivoine. Toucher élégant pour une bouche sphérique, pleine de jus, dynamique, juste. Vin à la fois sérieux et hédoniste, c'est très bon.

Flowers and black raspberry permeate the nose, while soft, silky, polished, ripe, red fruits do their work on your palate. The wine is refined, elegant and very Margaux.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Marquis de Terme gives up bold blackberry compote, blueberry pie and crème de cassis scents with nuances of menthol, tobacco and cedar chest. The full-bodied palate is quite serious and stern, with firm, ripe tannins and seamless freshness to support the pure, pronounced black fruits, finishing with a minty lift.

This is very pretty with a dense center palate of dark fruit, toasted oak and spice. Some hazelnut, too. Full body. Flavorful finish.
