Marjosse - Bordeaux 2022

Marjosse, the magic of the place.

Château Marjosse is a historic estate built in 1782 and located 14 km south of Saint-Emilion. Its history took a major turn in the early 1990s when the Deleuze family decided to lease part of the parcels to a young ambitious winemaker named Pierre Lurton, who would become the current General Manager of Yquem and Cheval Blanc. Little by little, he bought back the different parcels of the estate and opened a new chapter in 2017 with the arrival of Jean Marc Domme as technical director. The rest of the story is still being written as Pierre and Jean-Marc dive deeper and deeper into the subtleties of this magnificent terroir seeking to capture its essence vintage after vintage.

Its 35ha vineyard is located on exceptional clay and limestone soils. Pierre Lurton's "Secret Garden" is a patchwork of young and old vines, almost a century old.

The 2022 vintage

The past spring, very dry and unseasonnally hot, was a clear sign to Pierre Lurton and technical director Jean-Marc Domme that the weather, in 2022, would be extreme. How right they were: temperatures broke all records and the summer heat sped up the ripening of the grapes, forcing the team to kick off harvest earlier than ever.

The clay-limestone gives Château Marjosse 2022 a surprisingly calm and composure. The aroma profile is clear and distinct, with ripe cherry and redcurrant berries intermingled with hints of clove and licorice-like sweetness. The entry is exceptionally smooth, with impeccable acidity that persists until the finish, leaving behind a pure fruit fragrance. The tannin structure is delicate, almost powdery, giving the finish a captivating quality.

Ripe cherry aromatics, firm tannins that are holding everything in place, but generous enough to get things revved up and keep focus on the fruit. This is exactly what you look for in a smaller chateaux in a vintage like 2022 - it's easy to drink with plenty of personality. 20% barrels for ageing, the rest in vat. Frost at the beginning of April, reduced the quantity and meant they focused a little more on Merlot this year, but there is still black pepper and spiced violet notes from the old Malbec. Jean-Marc Domme winemaker since March 2018, Pierre Lurton owner. A value buy.

2026-2036 90/100

This is pretty and vibrant, showing subtle cream to the red berries, currants and citrus on the nose. Quite firm and juicy on the palate with lightly chewy tannins and a fine, medium-long finish. Merlot, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. Drink from 2025.

Ruby plum colour, this has structure and gentle tannins, appealingly succulent raspberry and blackberry fruits, with waves of sage and cofee bean alongside. Good quality, should be good value, and is one to look out for. Pierre Lurton's home estate.

The 2022 Marjosse is fabulous. Rich and sumptuous to the core, the 2022 offers up copious blue and black fruit, lavender, spice, licorice and a kick of spice. This extroverted, juicy red delivers the goods. Drinking window : 2025-2037

The 2022 Marjosse is a blend of 75% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Malbec. Owner Pierre Lurton commented, “We have a lot of chalk and clay at Marjosse, so we never have a problem with freshness. We recently bought a small plot of Cabernet Franc, which did very well. It was a long harvest starting on 5th September and ending at the beginning of October. We had to go very light on the extraction and we couldn't use any of the press juice because it was too powerful.” The wine has a deep garnet-purple color and shoots from the glass with energetic notes of fresh, juicy blackberries, warm plums, and kirsch, followed by hints of cardamom, dusty soil, and crushed rocks. The medium to full-bodied palate is coated with bright, expressive black fruits, supported by a lively backbone and plush, velvety tannins, finishing long, with a spicy lift. Well placed to succeed in these hot, dry vintages and with a good proportion of very old vines, which tend to handle these climatic conditions very well, this is likely to be one of the best bargains of the vintage.

Black cherries, currants and flowers show in the nose. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, soft, forward, elegant and fruity. This should deliver pleasure with ease on release. Drink from 2025-2030.

A really delicious Bordeaux with lovely silky tannins that are well-integrated. Blackcurrant and orange peel with some stone undertones. It’s friendly and delicious already.
