Malartic Lagravière rouge - Pessac-Léognan 2022

Malartic Lagravière, a modern day adventure

In 1996, the ship "Malartic Lagravière" took a new course with the arrival of the Bonnie family. Jean-Jacques and Séverine Bonnie, the new generation, are now at the helm of this Grand Cru Classé de Graves and are bringing the estate into a new era with dynamism. Under their leadership, the wines have been shining.

Protected by the pine trees of the Landes forest, the vineyard of Château Malartic-Lagravière is mainly located on one of the most beautiful gravelly hillsides, dominated by soils composed of fine gravel, mixed with shell limestone and clay.

The 2022 vintage

Jean-Jacques Bonnie tells you about the vintage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1BjuQ_JZZ8&list=PLez2o_cjTYvjsySqCHnCZInBCJKEJAAQC&index=69

An astonishingly resilient vintage with a truly exceptional quality. A magnificent vintage that, contrarily to expectations, triumphed over spring frosts, drought and heatwaves to offer superb balance, density and freshness. This was a year in which the terroir demonstrated its extraordinary capacity for resilience when it is well cared for and the surrounding ecosystem is preserved.

Tasting notes

For the reds, the key to this vintage lies firstly in the exceptional maturity of Malartic’s Cabernet grapes. The result is then a sumptuous wines with superb substance and a silky texture supported by a dense structure. Malartic 2022’s tannic balance is thus particularly interesting: With plenty of freshness, the slender Merlot brings volume and softness. The spectacular Petit Verdot, with remarkable fruitiness and creaminess, contributes with the Cabernet Franc to a global freshness and aromatic richness

The 2022 Malartic-Lagravière has a more outgoing and expressive nose than Domaine de Chevalier or Smith Haut-Lafitte, yet it too has impressive complexity and convincing terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. A lovely, fleshy mid-palate, quite caressing in style, with fine acidity and a healthy dose of black pepper on the finish. Excellent, a Malartic-Lagravière that pushes some of the pricier names of the appellation. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting in London.

Though Château Malartic-Lagravière’s production was limited, the quality is undoubtedly exceptional. Their wines are renowned for their sweetness and vibrance even when young. But in 2022, it builds upon this foundation by incorporating greater depth and intensity, much like a piece of obsidian shrouded in a mysterious glow. It may seem understated, yet very dynamic. If the structure remains balanced after bottling, it has the potential to become one of the most outstanding vintages in its history.

The Bonnie family is on a roll at this excellent property. Dense and concentrated but with finesse and acidity, this has a beautiful balance, and a creaminess to the fruit that is superb. Appealing pulses of white pepper and sage spice, well drawn out through the palate, exceptional skill shown during ageing at controlling the oak impact. Yields in the low 30hl/h, but maintains freshness. Vinified in a mix of small wooden casks and stainless steel vats, aged in oak.

A blend of 56% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2.5% Petit Verdot and 0.5% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Malartic Lagravière reveals a classic, elegant bouquet of cassis, mulberries, flowers and spices. Medium to full-bodied and round, it's elegantly juicy with a generously extracted structure leading the way to an assertive, structured tannic frame, concluding with a spicy, long finish. Notably, the blend has shifted since the en primeur tasting, lending the wine a more introverted character.

Awesome levels of blackcurrants, darker cherries, roasted herbs, chocolate, and scorched earth all emerge from the 2022 Château Malartic-Lagravière, an incredibly concentrated, rich, layered beauty that has velvety tannins, a deep, layered mid-palate, and a blockbuster finish. It's easily the finest I've tasted from this château and is a riveting 2022 that deserves 4-6 years in the cellar and will keep for two decades or more. The 2022 is based on 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, with the élevage spanning 20 months in 60% new French oak. There are a little over 8,000 cases of this brilliant wine.

2027-2047 96/100

The 2022 Malartic Lagravière has a graceful and delineated bouquet that shows more precision and nascent vibrancy than most of its peers. It has blackberry, raspberry and light violet petal scents and an underlying marine influence that becomes more vocal with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, offering impressive balance. This "cool" Pessac-Léognan has a sapid finish that draws you back for more. It is excellent.

Pale gold in colour, intense white flowers and citrus on the aromatics, delicious peach pit and quince on the opening, concentrated and luscious with serious grip. 7ha of vines for the whites, harvest August 2 through to September 1. 18hl/h yield after a dry season.

A fascinating Malartic-Lagraviere from this hot vintage, but the wine is surprisingly fresh, showing depth, innate balance and complexity. The mineral-etched fruit turns glossy, with fine aromas of cassis, berries, plums, spices and a hint of violets. Almost full-bodied, with a complete package of fruit and chalky tannins. Long, juicy and posh. One of the best ever. Drink from 2027.

The 2022 Malartic Lagravière is a pretty sexy wine, its considerable tannins notwithstanding. A blast of dark cherry, plum, licorice, chocolate, new leather and spice makes a strong opening statement. The 2022 is dense and packed to the core, with formidable intensity of fruit and equally imposing tannins. This is a brute.

Warm plum, black currant and black cherry compote notes cruise through slowly, inlaid with singed alder and black tea. Warm earth, bay and burnished leather hints keep the finish nicely grounded. Very solid. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2026 through 2038. 8,330 cases made.

Round, concentrated, vibrant and dynamic, a lovely burst of intense red and black fruits before quite serious tannins take hold in the mouth. Fine but full, they give the frame and the structure, setting the tone for a serious wine while the fruit and freshnes softly expand giving an aerial element to the finish. A lovely wine with intensity and detail, not the most demonstrative or juicy and appealing right now, but really well made and delivered. Supple, bright, chalky, chewy, this wine has intensity and precision. A little bit serious towards the end, the fruit just losing some focus, where it becomes more about the tannins and freshness but lots to like here with good potential. 1.5% Cabernet Franc. A yield 27hl/ha. HVE3 certified.

The 2022 Malartic Lagravière was picked 5 to 29 September at 27hL/ha and matured in 60% new oak. Blackberry, iodine and incense aromas unfurl in the glass, nicely focused and delineated, quite airy in style. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. Cohesive and powdery in texture, with black fruit, crushed stone and light ash-like notes toward the finish. This is an excellent, quite "swarthy" Malartic that will age with style, though it will only repay the patient.

Medium deep crimson. Fragrant black cherry, blueberry cedar aromas. Richly flavoured and vigorous with plentoful dark berry fruits, fine chalky/ al dente tannins and udnerlying ceary/ bitter sweet notes. Finishes firm, long and sweet fruited. (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Aroud 50% new oak)

Pale gold, excellent grip, white pear and citrus, luscious lemon and green apple, this is a good walking the line between full exotic fruits and fleshier green apple and sage. Great stuff from this excellent property.

The 2022 Château Malartic-Lagravière does incredibly well in the vintage and offers a beautiful sense of freshness and elegance while still staying concentrated and textured. A blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, it has an up-front, expressive style in its red and blue fruits as well as spring flower, tobacco, and graphite-like aromatics. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has ripe, polished tannins, fabulous overall balance, and a great finish. The purity and precision here are top-notch.

The 2022 Malartic Lagravière exudes class. Bright, layered and wonderfully vibrant, the 2022 is so alive. Rose petals, lavender, crushed rocks, mint and red/purplish fruit race across the palate. All the elements are so well balanced. Malartic Lagravière has all the potential to be one of the great wines of the year. This is a fabulous showing. Tasted two times. Drinking window : 2030-2047

With a depth of color, the wine pops with nuances of flowers, cherries, cedar, tobacco leaf, black currants, spice, cocoa, and mint tea. Even better on the palate, the concentrated, showy display of spicy, black cherries, blackberries, plums, white pepper, and dark chocolate is perfectly balanced with length, freshness and creamy, silkiness in the finish. The wine is a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, 2.5% Petit Verdot and 1.5% Cabernet Franc. 14.2% ABV pH 3.58. Harvesting took place September 5 - September 29. Drink from 2026-2050.

This is very, very fine with wonderfully polished tannins that are silky in texture. It’s medium- to full-bodied with lovely length, lasting a minute or two. Hints of crushed stone and fine sea salt. Finesse with structure. Could move up a notch with the elevage. 53% cabernet sauvignon, 43% merlot, 2.5% petit verdot, and 1.5% cabernet franc.
