Deep, bright ruby-red. Rather medicinal aromas of cassis, licorice, dark chocolate, menthol and shoe polish went into a shell in the glass. Then suave and surprisingly ripe in the mouth; classically dry but not at all austere, with well-judged extraction to the fla vors of black raspberry, graphite and minerals. Rich, structured wine with a slow-building finish featuring substantial but harmonious tannins and terrific sweetness for all its backbone.

Among the more tannic and backward wines of the vintage, the 2007 is another outstanding effort from this estate. Already somewhat closed, it is a candidate for one of the longest lived wines of the vintage. Beautifully pure black currant and black cherry fruit interwoven with notions of cedar and wood are found in this medium to full-bodied, structured, masculinestyled St.-Julien. The attack reveals sweetness and softness, but then the wine shuts down. It will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring, and should keep for 15 or more. Drink 2010-2027 (91+)

Offers mineral and berry aromas, with hints of dried fruits. Fullbodied, with chewy tannins and a long finish. Racy and refined. Very beautiful and polished. Best after 2012.

(a blend of 82% cabernet sauvignon, 10% cabernet franc and 8% merlot) Good full ruby. Very pure aromas of blackberry, black cherry, violet and licorice. A sweet, juicy midweight with supple, attractive fruit and lovely inner-mouth floral character. Serious and firmly structured in the style of Las Cases but harmonious from the start and not at all forbidding. Finishes with sweet tannins and very good length.

Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, opaker Kern, violette Reflexe.

A very deep purple/garnet hue. The nose is very closed at first, with scents of black cherries, blackcurrant, cassis, violets and a faint hint of blood orange. The palate is full-bodied, very well-balanced with incredibly pure fruits. Filigree tannins, cohesive, superb weight and here, one of the few wines with that peacock’s tail of flavours on the finish, really lingering to reveal hidden nuances. Lush black cherries, vanilla, blueberries and again that tang of sweet, juicy blood orange. Great length. A wily, feminine Las-Cases. Très bon. Tasted April 2008.

Mid crimson. Tingly fruit. 15% press wine, as in 1995. Good energy. Cuts off quite suddenly after a rich, sweet start. So soft with flattering black fruits on the front palate and then tough and tarry on the finish. A bit toughened up. Not fine or gentle. Very tough compared with the Clos du Marquis. Not in the spirit of the vintage but certainly in the spirit of Las Cases. An interesting comparison with that other wine which usually has no shortage of tannin, Ch Latour.

This is layered, with sweet tobacco, currants, berries and dried flowers. Full and silky, with a long finish. Beautiful already. —J.S.
