Magnum Château Angélus - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2004 6b11bd6ba9341f0271941e7df664d056

The rather worrying weather conditions at the start are stabilized at the end of August and become exceptional until mid-October. 6b11bd6ba9341f0271941e7df664d056 Slow maturation promotes the expression of finesse. 6b11bd6ba9341f0271941e7df664d056 The tasting brings out an opaque robe and aromas of black fruits. 6b11bd6ba9341f0271941e7df664d056 The tannins are sumptuously refined. 6b11bd6ba9341f0271941e7df664d056 The balance and freshness express at the end of the mouth all the elegance of this vintage. 6b11bd6ba9341f0271941e7df664d056 Guard: 2025. 6b11bd6ba9341f0271941e7df664d056

Tasted at Farr Vintners and then at Bordeaux Index's 2004 tasting. The Château Angelus 2004 has a "correct" foursquare but well-defined bouquet with lively blackberry, cedar and tobacco scents that suggest a healthy percentage of Cabernet Franc. The palate is medium-bodied with powdery tannins. It feels conservative and masculine although it retains admirable freshness and composure towards the succulent vanilla-tinged finish where the fruit really shines. This being Angelus it is lacquered with a modern sheen but whether that is your style or not, it is one of the most finest Saint Emilion wines of the vintage. Tasted March 2014.

Flamboyant.

Deep ruby. Wild aromas of plum, redcurrant, game, underbrush and flowers; hints of liqueur-like superripeness. Supple and suave but also rich and large-scaled; seriously concentrated and deep for the vintage but less sweet than the 2005. This boasts lovely texture and broad, ripe tannins but I find more intensity and incipient complexity-not to mention purity and lift-in the young 2006.

This 7,500-case blend of 62% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Franc is one of the strongest wines of the vintage. A deep blue/purple hue is accompanied by classic aromas of smoky blueberries and blackberries as well as incense and floral notes in the background. A beautiful texture, opulence, flamboyance, and purity characterize this stunningly deep, full-bodied effort, another great success from proprietor Hubert de Bouard. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2022.

Dark ruby in color, with coffee bean, meat and berry aromas. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a medium finish. I love the texture. Balanced and stylish. Best after 2010. 8,330 cases made.

One of the top wines of the vintage, the 2004 Angelus (a 7,500-case blend of 62% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Franc with a natural alcohol of 13.5%) is a classic, tannic, structured wine exhibiting a saturated dense purple color as well as a big, sweet nose of blackberries and blueberries intermixed with mocha, licorice, and new oak characteristics. Aged eight months sur-lies, this should be an extremely long-lived vintage for this cuvee. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025.

A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, all harvested between October 5 - 14, this is a wine of considerable precision, elegance, and purity. A deep purple color is accompanied by a vibrant, fragrant bouquet of blue and black fruits intertwined with flower, herb, and mineral scents. Medium-bodied and pure, with a charming texture, an undeniable mineral character to the fruit as well as a clean, long finish, it is not the most powerful wine proprietor Hubert de Bouard has made, but it is stylish, savory, and ageworthy. There are 7,500 cases of this beauty. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020.

This shows wonderful ripe fruit with plum, berry and hints of sweet tobacco. Full-Bodied with a wonderful velvety texture. This has 40 % Cabernet Franc and the rest Merlot. This is the same quality level as 2000 but less exotic in style. Almost 95-100.
