Madame de Beaucaillou - Haut-Médoc 2019

MADAME DE BEAUCAILLOU, A TRIBUTE TO MADAME EUGÈNE-BORIE

This new wine comes from our vineyards located in the Haut-Médoc; plots brought by Madame Eugène-Borie on her marriage and more recently by the acquisition of plots from Madame Fort-Pradère.
A tribute to the woman who chaired the Supervisory Board from 1998 and until this year 2020, but also to an attentive and loving mother. To the muse too. The opportunity to put the spotlight on this great lady who, out of discretion and humility, was content to stay in the shadows. Gently, calmly, her image will join the long line of female owners of Ducru-Beaucaillou, equally inspiring and demanding, Marie Desjean, Marie du Luc Ravez, Lucie-Caroline Johnston, Princesse Marie Karadja de Constantinople, Mary de Burke... All of them had an essential role in the rise to fame of Ducru-Beaucaillou. Strength and grace.

Vinified in our cellars by the Ducru-Beaucaillou SA teams, this wine receives the best care: the technical winemaking process, very selective blending, and careful ageing for 12 months in barrel (including 20% new oak). Technique at the service of purity of expression. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon rub shoulders without ever competing; one brings opulence, the other brings structure. In blends, as in marriage, it is complementarity, mutual exaltation that counts.

MADAME DE BEAUCAILLOU is an invitation but also an introduction to the Borie signature, to the philosophy of the house. A reasonable price for an ambitious wine. Pleasure that goes right to the soul. Delicate, fruity, playful, charming, with a restrained tannic presence. Intrepid youth is caressed. That’s how this women’s wine looks. Those who whisper in our ears that when we don’t love too much, we don’t love enough.

Really floral and pretty with currants, cherries and some violets and stones. Medium-bodied with a creamy texture. Attractive tannins and stony undertones. A large percentage of merlot with the cabernet, making it fresh and firm. Sophisticated. Better after 2024.

Coming from the Haut- Médoc and bottled in May, the 2019 Madame De Beaucaillou reveals a deep ruby/purple as well as a great nose of red and black cherries, leafy herbs, damp earth, and flowers. Medium-bodied, mouth-filling, and balanced, it has the vintage's purity and focus front and center yet still brings plenty of fruit, texture, and pleasure. Drink this beauty over the coming 4-6 years.

From fully 50 hectares of vineyards in Listrac and Cussac, planted with a majority of Merlot, the 2019 Madame de Beaucaillou offers up aromas of blackberry and cassis, framed by a deft application of creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, bright and lively, with powdery tannins and a saline finish, it's a hearty, chunky, flavorful wine that will round out with a bit of bottle age.

The 2019 Madame de Beaucaillou has turned out beautifully. Bright, floral and effusive, the Madame offers up crushed red berry fruit, spice, new leather and licorice. This effusive, charming red offers tons of immediacy and sheer appeal. I would prefer to drink it over the next handful of years. The Madame is a blend from vineyards that previously informed Bruno Borie's Listracs, plus other parcels just outside Saint-Julien.

The 2019 Madame de Beaucaillou is the first vintage where 100% of the Haut-Médoc went into the blend. It has a light, well-defined nose of black currant and light briary scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm, quite masculine and peppery entry, moderate depth and an austere finish that will need a little time. Given how fleshy it was in barrel, I am surprised how grippy this has become, but I suspect it will fill out with bottle age.

A new wine in the range, made from the vineyards that Ducru-Beaucaillou owns in the Haut-Medoc, the 2019 Madame de Beaucaillou is a blend of 68% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. The alcohol is 13.92% and the pH is 3.62. It is set to age for 12 months in French oak barrels, 20% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it sails out of the glass with notions of plums preserves, blueberry pie and Morello cherries plus hints of cinnamon stick, clove oil and candied violets plus a waft of Sichuan pepper. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with rich black fruit and a plush texture, offering oodles of freshness to lift the spicy nuances to a long finish.

The 2019 Madame de Beaucaillou is a new wine dedicate to Bruno Borie' mother, Madame Eugène-Borie, as Ducru celebrates its 300th anniversary. Madame de Beaucaillou is made from an assortment of vineyards that previously informed Bruno Borie's Listracs, plus other parcels just outside Saint-Julien. I would prefer to drink it on the young side, while the sweet floral, tobacco and cedary flavors remain fresh. The tannins are a bit strict, at least today. Tasted from a 100ml screwcap sample bottle. According to Bruno Borie, ideal weather in September balanced the heat of the previous summer months. Readers will note a re-alignment of the range, with the two Listracs now gone and two new wines in the lineup. I tasted all of the 2019s in 100ml bottles that arrived in a very attractive package in less than 48 hours from Bordeaux. I applaud the desire to be respectful of the environment and not wasteful of wine, but I am not convinced this bottling system works yet. I found the 2019s all very hard, something that time did not help, with less of the fleshy and sumptuousness I am used to finding in these wines. I won't be surprised if the wines show better from a full bottle, but at the same time, I can only review and comment on the wines that were sent to me.

The 2019 Madame De Beaucaillou comes from a vineyard in the Haut-Médoc, south of Saint-Julien, and is a blend of 68% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc brought up in 30% new French oak. It has lots of juicy black cherry and leafy herbs as well as a medium-bodied, elegant yet also concentrated style on the palate. My money is on it being an outstanding wine as well as a smoking value. Drink it over the coming 7-8 years.

The 2019 Madame de Beaucaillou offers attractive blackcurrant pastilles mixed with pressed iris petals and orange blossom on the nose that is well defined and contains plenty of joie-de-vivre. The palate is medium-bodied with a succulent opening. Fleshy and round, it offloads plenty of black fruit laced with white pepper exerting a gentle grip on the finish. I suspect this will be an approachable 2019 that will give a decade's worth of drinking pleasure.
