Lynch Moussas - Pauillac 2023

Lynch Moussas, a flagship wine of the Castéja family

The history of Château Lynch Moussas dates back to 1610, when Domaine de Moussas-Bages belonged to the Jehan family, who were wine merchants and owners of several estates. Since 1919, it has been intimately linked to that of the Castéja family. Château Lynch-Moussas, classified as a Grand Cru Classé in Pauillac in 1855, has been a valuable asset to the family. Over the decades, each generation has been dedicated to developing, modernising and enhancing this Grand Cru.

The vineyard, covering 62 hectares (153 acres) in the heart of the Pauillac appellation, produces grapes of the finest quality. It is situated in close proximity to a number of other Grand Cru Classé vineyards, including Château Latour, Château Lynch-Bages, Château Pichon-Longueville Baron, Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste and, of course, Château Batailley.

2023: An Unusual Vintage, A Revolution

This year's vintage was marked by very particular climatic conditions, which allowed us to create a new style of wine. The Cabernet Sauvignons are exceptional and the Merlots are very well balanced, resulting in a surprising wine for the consumer.

The 2023 Lynch-Moussas offers quite tertiary-driven black fruit, melted tar and cedar on the nose. It doesn't quite have the delineation or ambition of the previous vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, an appealing roundness and approachability here, although there is plenty of stuffing on the back end. Quite peppery on the aftertaste, this will require three or four years in bottle. Promising.

Very good density here, with deep notes of graphite, cassis, dark cherries and a touch of black olives and cigar box. Structured, with medium to full body and tight, fine-grained tannins. Long and compact. 78% cabernet sauvignon and 22% merlot. Drink from 2027.

Smoky red and black fruits, spicy oak, savory herbs, and cedar all emerge from the 2023 Château Lynch-Moussas, a medium-bodied, nicely balanced, elegant 2023 that has ripe, integrated tannins, moderate overall density, yet solid length on the finish. It's a solid effort in the vintage that's going to shine with just a few years of bottle age.

Lynch-Moussas (Pauillac; 78% Cabernet Sauvignon; 22% Merlot; a final yield of 49 hl/ha, with half of the production making the selection for the grand vin; tasted at the UGC press tasting at the Cité du Vin and at Batailley). A little less engaging when tasted after Lynch-Bages, which I guess is the cross it must bear, but soft, gentle, easy and lithe. Raspberry. A little sloe and damson. Lithe and quite plush if not exactly plump. The tannins are a little less refined on the finish, but the progress here needs to be underscored. A much stronger wine than it used to be and an impressive showing from a wine that used to be rustic and even a little coarse.

Tobacco leaf, licorice, espresso currants, cherries, and flowers. The medium-bodied palate is loaded with soft, fresh, ripe, round, black cherries, and juicy, currants. There is length, freshness, complexity, and loads of classic character here. The wine blends 78% Cabernet Sauvignon with 22% Merlot. 13.5% ABV. Drink from 2027-2050. 92-94 Pts.

Lynch Moussas is classically one of the lighter-styled Pauillac classifieds, and its intensity in both colour and tannic architecture in this vintage reflects just how well this appellation has fared in 2023. There is balance to the blackberry fruits set against tobacco leaf and liqourice, although the levels of ripeness are not as fully in evidence as with Batailley. But honestly, this small group of wines, under the ownership of Philippe Casteja, can be relied up for offering typicity and great quality at still-reasonable prices. 49hl/h yield. 58% new oak for ageing, 50% 1st wine.

The 2023 Lynch-Moussas is super-expressive right out of the gate. The lifted, expansive bouquet is enticing. Red-toned fruit, blood orange, cedar, new leather and sweet pipe tobacco build over time, adding layers of complexity and overall dimension. This stylish, mid-weight Pauillac is a delight.

The 2023 Lynch-Moussas was picked from September 12 to October 5 and matured in 58% new oak according to Frédéric Castèja. Quite lucid in color, the concentrated nose opens immediately with blackcurrant, cedar and violets, albeit lacking the precision of the Batailley. The palate has a velvety entry and a fine line of acidity, cohesive with a finish that seems to glide. Maybe it doesn't have the density of a great Lynch-Moussas, but this will be a very drinkable Pauillac. It will benefit from three or four years in bottle.

The 2023 Lynch-Moussas is deep garnet-purple in color. Notes of redcurrants, kirsch, and juicy raspberries pop from the glass, followed by hints of rose oil, wild sage, and forest floor. The medium-bodied palate delivers alluring tension and firm, fine-grained tannins to support the red berry and savory layers, finishing with a skip in its step. The blend is 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot.

This really takes off at the end. It’s medium-bodied with excellent tannins that run the length of the wine. Very solid. 78% cabernet sauvignon and 22% merlot.
