Lynch Moussas - Pauillac 2022

Lynch Moussas, a flagship wine of the Castéja family

The history of Château Lynch Moussas goes back to 1610, when Domaine de Moussas-Bages belonged to the Jehan family, who were wine merchants and owners of several estates. Since 1919 it has been intimately linked to that of the Castéja family. Château Lynch-Moussas, ranked as a Grand Cru Classé in Pauillac in 1855, has been one of the jewels of the family. Over the decades, each generation has been dedicated to develop, modernise and enhance this Grand Cru.

Its vineyard covering 62 hectares (153 acres) in the heart of the Pauillac appellation, produces grapes of the finest quality. It is adjacent to plots belonging to a certain number of other Grands Crus Classés, such as Château Latour, Château Lynch-Bages, Château Pichon-Longueville Baron, Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste and of course Château Batailley.

The 2022 vintage

"This 2022 vintage will mark our memory due to its exceptional climate.
Spring is marked by 5 days of heavy frost, happily our own Estates haven’t been hit. Flowering mid-May is quick and homogeneous for all grape varietals.
June sees very high temperatures, heavy rains, important storms, all this followed by a very dry July with grapes turning colour very rapidly during the middle of the month. This Summer was extremely dry and warm. The warmest since 1947. Picking started early September and finished before the end of the month. It was very concentrated grapes with extremely small berries which have given these wines with deep dark colours, this beautiful maturity, and extreme richness, all these stamps of this Exceptional Vintage."

Château Lynch-Moussas 2022 is a Pauillac full of energy, with its soft and finely textured palate placing it among the finest vintages. The toasted oak aromas are more subdued than in previous years, with hints of violet that lend an extra touch of elegance. The tannins are relatively refined, with a powdery texture lingering on the finish. The licorice, graphite, and star anise spices in the aftertaste add complexity, showcasing the depth and heritage of this classic Pauillac.

2027-2039 92/100 ?

The 2022 Lynch-Moussas has developed well on the nose since primeur, offering a mélange of red and black fruit, pencil shavings and light forest floor scents that are all well defined and focused. The oak here is neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid black fruit mixed with cedar and white pepper tones, building nicely toward a structured cracked pepper finish that lingers in the mouth. This is promising. It is a more refined Lynch-Moussas compared to prior vintages.

Very clear and transparent with blackcurrant, blueberry, lead pencil, mint and violet aromas that follow through to a medium body with ultrafine tannins that go on and on. Such polish and beauty. Crunchy at the end. 74% cabernet sauvignon and 26% merlot. Try this after 2028.

Cool blue fruits on the nose, a little shy at this point. Intensely fruited, really rich and ripe but clean and clear, giving a depth of ripe blackcurrants but juicy, fresh and alive. Almost sharp, it’s intense with bite to the fruit and such lean tannins that give a firm but light grip to the mouth. I like the attack, it’s bold and confident but refined at the same time. Good fruit profile, balancing acidity and lovely lean, mineral tannins. Well structured, nothing too much or overdone with freshness throughout. Well worked with precision. Spicy, black pepper, cedar, tobacco, liquorice, a touch of coffee, but all giving nuance underneath the fruit, tannins and acidity. It’s concentrated no doubt, this has power, but is presented carefully with such a lifted, juicy finish. This will be a beauty.

Château Lynch-Moussas 2022 is a vibrant Pauillac, with a soft and creamy texture that I believe makes it one of the best vintages in its history. The toasty aromas of oak barrels are more subdued than before, delicately adorned with violet scents and a touch of elegance. The tannins are as silky as threads, with a powdery texture on the aftertaste. The hints of licorice, graphite, and star anise on the finish cleverly enhance its complexity, highlighting the depth of this venerable Pauillac winery.

Deep crimson. Refreshing minerally wine with attractive blackcurrant, mulberry hint mocha aromas. Grainy and bittersweet on the palate with ample dark berry fruits and fresh brambly/ leafy tannins. Cedary at the finish. Very good inky density and mineral length. (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot 55% new oak). 93-94+

The 2022 Lynch-Moussas, 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot, is deep garnet-purple in color. It charges out with bold notions of blackcurrant jelly, baked black plums, and fruitcake, plus wafts of tobacco leaves, powdered cinnamon, and wild sage. The medium-bodied palate has bags of energy, with plenty of freshness and a backbone of grainy tannins providing support, finishing long and savory.

Smoky dark fruits and leafy tobacco are just some of the notes in the 2022 Château Lynch-Moussas, a medium to full-bodied, nicely balanced, beautifully layered Pauillac. The tannins here are ripe and polished, and it has plenty of mid-palate depth as well as outstanding length. It's a seriously good wine, if not the finest I've tasted from this château. It's clearly in the same ballpark as the 2018, 2019, and 2020.

The nose shows its tobacco leaf, cedar, lead pencil and currant side with a single swirl. On the palate, the wine is soft, polished, and fresh, with black raspberries, currants, licorice ,and most importantly, sweetness, and lift to the red berries as well as a nice licorice accent on the back of the finish. Give it a few years in the cellar before pulling a cork, and it will be even better. The wine blends 74% Cabernet Sauvignon with 26% Merlot. 14% ABV. 3.7 pH. The harvest took place September 8 - September 27. Drink from 2026-2050.

Exhibiting aromas of rich cassis, berries, licorice and loamy soil, the 2022 Lynch-Moussas is medium to full-bodied, firm and somewhat austere.

Extremely well done with a full body and nicely integrated tannins that give this tension and power. The structure is wonderful. Minty. Chocolate-covered coffee beans. Serious but fun.
