Lynch Bages - Pauillac 1999

Lynch Bages: The Distinctive Legacy of the Cazes Family

Nestled on the outskirts of Pauillac, with a commanding view of the Gironde estuary, Lynch-Bages, designated as a 1855 Grand Cru Classé, extends across one of the commune's most beautiful gravelly hilltops. Originally under the ownership of the esteemed Lynch family, of Irish heritage, the estate was purchased in 1939 by Jean-Charles Cazes.

Blending the realms of wine and culture, the Cazes family has positioned Lynch-Bages at the core of a lifestyle. In 2006, Jean-Michel Cazes passed the torch to his son, Jean-Charles, who remains steadfast in upholding the estate's exacting standards. The family has dedicated several years to meticulous vineyard work, pursuing an unwavering commitment to excellence. To further this pursuit, the Cazes family has invested in state-of-the-art facilities that match their lofty aspirations. The inauguration of the new winery in 2020 marked a significant milestone. Designed with a gravity-based approach, it draws inspiration from 19th-century vinification methods while seamlessly integrating modern knowledge and precision.

The wines of Lynch-Bages serve as a testament to the family's generosity and unwavering pursuit of excellence.

The 1999 Lynch-Bages has a deep core with modest aging on the rim. The nose is austere, a little introspective, as undergrowth mixes with black truffle and morels showing fine definition. There is definitely some greenness here. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins that frame the tart red fruit laced with tobacco and smoke. This attenuates a little towards the finish that displays a touch of greenness, though it fades in the glass. Tasted blind at the Lynch Bages vertical at the château.

A charming, lush, round, generous Lynch Bages, the 1999 offers plenty of sweet black currant fruit, damp earth, licorice, cedarwood and spicy herb-like characteristics. Medium-bodied, savory and broad in the mouth with no hard edges, this fully mature effort is a somewhat underrated vintage for this estate. Enjoy it over the next decade. Drink 2011-2021

This dense ruby/purple-colored 1999 is a modern day clone of this estate's wonderful 1962. The 1999 reveals forward, open-knit notes of creme de cassis and earth. It is fleshy, medium to full-bodied, and succulent, with supple tannin, excellent balance, as well as a long, pure, ripe finish. This seductive effort will drink well for 12-15 years, possibly longer.

Berry and tobacco aromas, with hints of spice. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a fruity finish. Slightly one-dimensional, but a good wine. Not a great Lynch, but very good. Best after 2004. 35,000 cases made.

A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by sweet, fat, creme de cassis aromas and flavors intermixed with leather, underbrush, and cedar. Displaying a gorgeous texture, full body, and a precocious, sexy, low acid personality, it will drink well upon release and over the following 15 years.

Lynch-Bages has fashioned their sexiest, most succulent effort since the hedonistic fruit bomb produced in 1990. Displaying a dense purple color as well as low acidity, this blackberry and cassis-flavored 1999 possesses a fat, juicy mid-section, and outstanding purity, ripeness, and glycerin in the long finish, which oozes over the palate with no bumps. The tannin is well-concealed by the wealth of chewy fruit. A blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot, approximately 75% of the production made it into the final wine. Anticipated maturity: now-2015
