Lusseau - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2023

Lusseau, the expertise of the Grand Crus Classés

Chateau Lusseau is a tiny property of 2 ha located close to Chateau Monbousquet in AOC Saint Emilion Grand Cru. It is the family estate of Laurent Lusseau who is the technical director of Pavie, Bellevue Mondotte, Pavie Decesse, Monbousquet and Clos Lunelles for many years. During his fantastic career at Gerard Perse vineyards, Laurent Lusseau got exceptional scores from many journalists… among which not less than seven perfect scores (100/100) on Pavie and Bellevue Mondotte.

The 2023 Lusseau feels a bit pinched on the nose, does not quite possess the "flow" of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, a little greenness here, moderate weight with a more Left Bank-inspired finish. Short.

Blackberries, bark, some licorice and dried plums on the nose. It’s full-bodied with plenty of juicy fruit and a long and intense finish. Some dried fruit at the end. Bold and slightly raisiny. A blend of 70% merlot, 20% cabernet franc and 10% cabernet sauvignon. Drink or hold.

From vines on the lower plain, not far from Château Pavie, the 2023 Château Lusseau offers up a medium-bodied, ripe, nicely balanced profile revealing ripe red and black fruits, some leather, tobacco, and spicy wood nuances, building tannins, and outstanding length.

The 2023 Lusseau is a floral, perfumed Saint-Émilion with plenty of near- and medium-term appeal. Strong Cabernet Franc inflections are quite present today, which lends to a feeling of expansiveness throughout.

The 2023 Lusseau has a high-toned bouquet that lacks a bit of amplitude; perhaps it was just a bit forced during the maceration? The palate is better with sapid black fruit and fine tannins, nicely balanced by a grippy, structured, graphite-infused finish. Hopefully, this will soften during its élevage.

A juicy red with plum and light jam character. Medium to full body with round tannins. Straightforward and fruit-driven.
