Lilian Ladouys (BIO-ORGANIC) - Saint-Estèphe 2024

Lilian Ladouys, the Lorenzetti family's favourite

In 2008, Jacky and Françoise Lorenzetti bought the estate after falling instantly in love with it. They brought passion and ambition to this new project. In 2018, the handover began with the arrival of Manon Lorenzetti. Guided by the same ambition as her parents, she brought new energy to their project. Manon wants to keep pushing towards best practices in the vineyard, that her parents initiated in 2009 alongside Vincent Bache-Gabrielsen and his team.

The 2024 vintage at Château Lilian Ladouys was defined by a significant achievement: the long-awaited certification in Organic Certification.

The 2024 vintage

2024 began with a mild, rainy winter that encouraged the spread of downy mildew, which was kept under control thanks to rigorous vigilance in organic viticulture. Heavy rainfall in May led to significant coulure, reducing yields but promoting more even and optimal ripening. A drier summer allowed the grapes to develop beautifully, and a rapid acceleration in ripening led to an intense harvest period from late September to early October.

Driven by Merlot and Petit Verdot, this vintage stands out for its richness, freshness, and complexity — a true reflection of the estate’s values: resilience, passion, and excellence.

Floral elements and some ripe dark berry fruit aromas on the nose. Softly juicy - strawberry and cranberry - with a clean and focussed expression. It’s lightly framed, sleek and straight but enjoyable. 3% Cabernet Franc complets the blend. Ageing 30% new wood, 20% 400L barrels, 10% amphorae. 3.7pH. Organic.

Deep garnet-purple colored. Features notes of fresh black cherries, red currants, and lilac, with underlying hints of graphite and fragrant soil. The light-bodied palate has zippy red berry flavors with herbal accents and grainy tannins, lifted by a racy backbone, finishing on a mineral note.

Darker cherries, mulberries, spicy wood, and graphite notes define 2024 Château Lilian Ladouys. Medium-bodied and nicely balanced on the palate, it has fine tannins and solid length. This could easily be an outstanding wine.

Sehr gelungen.

The bouquet of Lilian-Ladouys is refined and diverse, revealing scents of cherries and blood oranges, complemented by spicy nuances. The wine has good density, is structured, and is supported by well-integrated tannins in a fairly rounded context. An elegant, juicy, and flavorful wine! 2029-2044

The 2024 Lilian Ladouys, which has slightly higher levels of Merlot and Petit Verdot, has a touch of dark chocolate and espresso on the nose that marginally obscures some of the fruit and slightly detracts from its delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with light and grainy tannins, simple with a somehow "generic" finish. I'm not sure the composition of the blend really suits this Lilian Ladouys, and that is reflected in my score.

The 2024 Lilian Ladouys is a very pretty, mid-weight Saint-Estèphe. Floral and savory notes open first, leading to a core of red berry fruit. Lithe and elegant, with fine balance, Lilian Ladouys is quite the charmer. There's just a bit of tightness on the finish, but élevage should take care of that. Tasted two times.

Currants, tobacco leaf, and herbs pop in the core of the perfume here. Medium-bodied, forward, chewy, round, and fruity, leaving you with sweet, cherries and crisp, vibrant currants on the backend. The wine blends 66% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc. 12.9% ABV. Drink from 2027-2038.

There’s acrtually more Merlot and Petit Verdot here than usual. Bright, fresh, quite lifted and with a rich plum and fresh raspberry fruit. Gourmand. Rather vibrant. Tender and chewy, but with an impressively clear and limpid mouthfeel, the tannins very refined at this level.

The 2024 vintage of Château Lilian Ladouys beautifully complements its signature light style with the fresh character of the vintage, exceeding expectations. While it does not showcase complex floral and fruit layers, its relaxed and serene nature captivates upon the first taste. Achieving such balance in a vintage when polyphenol ripeness was generally limited is truly exceptional.

A blend of 66% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc, the 2024 Lilian Ladouys evokes aromas of dark berries and cassis. It is followed by a moderately weighted, supple and lively palate, yet it lacks the broad shoulders and depth found in stronger vintages.

Intense ruby, purple reflections, subtle brightening on the rim. On the nose, a subtle herbal savouriness, cherry compote, a hint of plum and a leafy touch. Slender on the palate, with a subtle sweetness, integrated tannins and a hint of salt on the mineral finish.
