Léoville Poyferré - Saint-Julien 2019

Léoville Poyferré, a timeless style

"What is essential is invisible to the eye"

Since 1920, the Cuvelier Family has drawn inspiration from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's profound words while meticulously shaping the distinctive style of Chateau Léoville Poyferré. Their journey has been characterized by care, contemplation, and an unwavering passion, all infused with a free-spirited ethos unbound by convention. These 'wine adventurers,' hailing from northern France, have always cast their gaze toward the horizon, steadfastly pursuing their mission: the perpetual enhancement of the wine and the revelation of the unique terroir, this hidden gem of the Médoc.

As the fourth generation at the helm of this 2nd Grand Cru Classé in 1855 from Saint-Julien, Sara Lecompte Cuvelier preserves what is the real strengths of Léoville Poyferré that may not necessarily be seen at first glance: a secular know-how paired with the complexity of the terroirs.

As a Saint-Julien known for its richness and ripeness, Léoville Poyferré 2019 blooms like a burning fire in this vintage. Not overly flashy, the aromas are magnificently gorgeous. The seductively charming flavor of blueberries and mulberries coated with a layer of dark chocolate powder. The body is powerful but elegant, delivering a tenderly juicy taste, creamy tannins, even a strand of orchid lingering on the palate. It is totally unbelievable that such a gigantic body maintains exceeding flexibility and lightness, as if an elephant soaring in the sky. ??????????Saint-Julien??, 2019???Léoville Poyferré?????????????????????,?????????????????????????????????,????????????????????,??????????????????????????????????,??????????,???????

Blackcurrant, wet-earth with fresh black-mushroom aromas. Some chocolate, too. Full-bodied with layers of beautiful, ripe fruit and creamy tannins. It’s chewy and focused. Impressive balance. Try after 2025.

The flagship 2019 Château Léoville Poyferré is based on 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot. It's one of the bigger, richer wines in the vintage and has a gorgeous, thrilling, full-bodied style as well as notes of crème de cassis, tobacco leaf, violets, and chocolate. While many estates seem to be playing it safe and focusing on so-called elegance and balance, I love that Poyferré continues to make a ripe, sexy, beautifully textured wine that always offers more opulence and sexiness than most in the vintage. Ranking with the crème de la crème of the vintage, this gorgeous Poyferré can be enjoyed any time over the coming 40-50 years. Bravo!

The 2019 Léoville Poyferré is showing very well in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of crème de cassis and wild berries mingled with notions of licorice, loamy soil, cigar wrapper and smoke. Full-bodied, velvety and polished, it's broad and enveloping, with an ample core of fruit, ripe tannins and succulent acids, concluding with a long, precise finish. Invariably the most sumptuous of the three Léovilles, featuring some 35% Merlot, the 2019 is a terrific effort that will offer a wide drinking window.

Throws off gorgeous warmed plum, blueberry reduction and açaí berry compote aromas and flavors, laced with ganache and sweet tobacco from start to finish. Delivers ample structure in the guise of a cold cast iron note buried underneath the showy fruit, with a flash of violet for treble in the background. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2025 through 2040. 15,000 cases made.

The 2019 Léoville-Poyferré is creamy, racy and voluptuous to the core. Bright red cherry/plum fruit, blood orange, mint, spice and menthol fill out the layers with effortless grace. In some tastings, the 2019 has come across as quite powerful, while in other moments it shows greater finesse. Either way, the 2019 is positively stunning. I very much admire its energy and persistence. Tasted three times.

The 2019 Léoville-Poyferré has the quintessential "LP" bouquet of perfumed blackberry, black plum, perhaps less tobacco than last year but still those hints of desiccated orange peel. It opens beautifully in the glass. The palate has a satin-like texture, a fine bead of acidity and fine pixelation. It is perhaps less luxuriant than I found this last year from barrel and has become slightly more linear, displaying a touch more breeding and precision. It fans out wonderfully on the finish, completing a fabulous Saint-Julien with huge potential. 14.18% alcohol

Casting a deep garnet-purple color, the 2019 Léoville Poyferré charges out of the gate with alluring notes of chocolate-covered cherries, blueberry pie, dried mulberries and blackcurrant cordial plus suggestions of camphor, espresso, spice cake and oolong tea. The medium to full-bodied palate reveals bags of freshness and a suitably approachable texture, supporting the decadent blackberry preserves and exotic spice layers, finishing on a stewed tea note. An already incredibly impressive wine, I imagine by the end of barrel aging the tannins will be fully brought into line here and the fruit will emerge singing of even more nuances.

The 2019 Léoville-Poyferré is magnificent. Inky, dark and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2019 possesses off-the-charts richness allied to tremendous breadth that grows over time. Crème de cassis, chocolate, licorice, sweet spice and menthol wrap around the palate as this dense, potent Saint-Julien shows off its alluring personality. Readers should be prepared to cellar the 2019 for some years, as it is a wine of raw power.

The 2019 Léoville-Poyferré has a typically seductive bouquet with layers of ripe black fruit laced with tobacco, sous-bois, touches of marmalade and dried orange peel. Give it another hour and more blue fruit begins to emerge. The palate is medium-bodied with lavish, luxuriant black fruit and a creamy texture that is instantly seductive. It is a more opulent Saint-Julien than the Barton with a satin-like texture on the finish. If you love the style of Léoville-Poyferré then you will adore this.

Deep and dark in color, the wine exudes flowers, tobacco, smoke, licorice and dark red fruit aromas. Full-bodied, lushly textured, round and fresh, the fruit has this beautiful, opulent, sensuous character. This is a good thing as it allows the cashmere tannins and layers of sweet, ripe, almost decadent berries to come alive, expand and really hang in there. If you are a fan of Leoville Poyferre, this needs to be in your cellar. Blending 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, the wine reached 14.1 alcohol. The harvest took place from September 20 to October 11. 96-98 Pts

Chewy and rich this year with lots of ripe tannins and solid depth of fruit. Chocolate and walnuts to the blue fruit. It's full-bodied. Plenty of fruit at the end. Excellent length.

Very ripe blackcurrant-cassis to smell; a rich, fresh, concentrated, firmly tannic wine;
a core flavor of abundant sweetly ripe Cabernet, long and fresh, but succulent and juicy from
its Merlot content, also complex and racy and aromatic at the same time; a relatively showy,
top 2019 St-Julien, still with a very refined tannin texture and lovely length. This will be
succulently seductive when at full maturity.
