Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château Léoville Poyferré has one of the most harmonious and complete bouquets from Saint Julien: very well-defined blackberry, briary and chalky scents, real focus and delivery here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, ripe tannin matched with well-judged acidity. Like the 2006 Léoville-Barton, it is stubborn and backward, but there is clearly harmony and focus on the finish, the new oak deftly assimilated in the fabric of the wine. This is a lovely wine from Didier Cuvelier. Tasted January 2016.

Green note dominates the nose. Then rather oily texture. Lots of acidity on the finish. Not graceful. Jagged. Pinched finish. Drink 2014-2024

Blackberry, licorice and blueberry aromas lead to a medium- to full-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a clean finish. Firm and attractive. Best after 2014.

Dense ruby/purple, with sweet blackberry and black currant fruit with hints of smoke, espresso roast, and new saddle leather, this is another impressively endowed but tannic, backward style of wine. The concentration, brightness, and depth are all present, but I can't see it being even approachable in less than 5-7 years. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028.

Deep ruby-red. Plum, currant and sexy cedary oak on the nose. At once sweet and vinous, with juicy acidity giving lift to the flavors of currant, licorice and minerals. Finishes firm and long, with a note of licorice and a slight dryness to the firm tannic spine. This has the energy and backbone for a long, slow evolution in bottle and will require patience.

A deep black/purple colour. The nose has certainly closed down since last year but has maintained its sense of minerality and delineation with blackberry, wild hedgerow, baked cherry and a certain citrus quality that turns more to blood orange. The palate is full-bodied with great freshness and vivacity, a sense of tempered exoticism. Good grip on the finish – this is still one of the best wines of the vintage. Drink 2015-2035 Tasted March 2008.

Deep colour, concentrated, quite wild/gamey nose, ripe briary fruit, high aciduty an high tannins, but enough natural fruit to carry it through to the long term.

Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, jugendliche Reflexe, violetter Rand.

Beautiful, vibrant, black raspberry and cassis fruit, fresh acidity, medium to full body, superb ripeness, melted tannins, and a long, savory, expansive mouthfeel are found in this top-notch St.-Julien. Friendlier than the more backward, tannic 2005 Leoville-Poyferre, the 2006 should be at its finest between 2011-2028.

Tasted at the château. A deep purple/black hue. The nose wafts from the glass and caresses the olfactory sense: blackberries, cherry, cold steel and lots of sweet vanillary new oak. The palate is full-bodied, beautifully balanced, and very pure with plump, Rubenesque, rounded fruit. A voluptuous Poyferré, soft and showy, lush and sensuous. A second bottle at the UGC was showing a little more structure and backbone. A medium- rather than long-term wine that is pretty irresistible.

A big, spicy wood flavored wine, very modern and smooth with its vanilla character. But there’s also some dominant tannin which brings strength and power to the wine. —R.V.

Lovely deep, dark crimson. Sweet and ripe on the nose – something of woodland about this on the nose. Definite vegetal freshness. Hint of molasses and a slightly green, fine note on the finish. Bit of a ballerina – leaner than some though very fine tannin management. Bravo! More elegant than usual.

A suivre précisément donc.

Solid core of fruit. Full-bodied, with big, chewy, slightly austere tannins. Lots of currant, mineral and blackberry on the finish. A little more on the midpalate would push it up a notch.
