Léoville Las Cases - Saint-Julien 2000

Léoville Las Cases - a Super Second that rivals the First Classified Growths

Since 1901, Château Léoville Las Cases, 2nd Grand Cru Classé in Saint-julien, has been one of the Delon family's gems. Its terroir is primarily located in the Clos de Léoville Las Cases, which you pass through when leaving the village of Saint-Julien towards Pauillac, part of which is located right next to Château Latour. The Grand Vin of Léoville du Marquis de Las Cases possesses completely unique characteristics. The wines age beautifully and can last for decades with a great level of intensity. When you taste an old Léoville Las Cases you always get something special, and often surprising.

Jean Guillaume Prats has taken over the management of the family estates for a year. Drawing upon his expertise garnered at Cos d'Estournel and at Château Lafite Rothschild, he has masterfully crafted an extraordinary 2022 vintage, which was unanimously acclaimed by critics for its unparalleled perfection. Léoville Las Cases 2022 has been bestowed with the flawless rating on no less than 18 occasions. It is an unprecedented feat in the annals of worldwide viticulture.

Now closing in on two decades, this is starting to soften and open, bringing exotic spices to the fore. The inky colour translates into tight black fruits with liquorice, cigar box, graphite and grilled gunsmoke. It’s still a little fierce in its tannic structure, and will need a few more years to be truly welcoming, but it’s clear that the grapes reached full phenolic ripeness. The invariably low pH at Leoville, often below 3.5 (as it is here), explains its iron grip. I last tasted this in October 2017 and it has barely budged an inch since then, but it gets significantly better after an hour in the glass (and being double decanted), giving you an idea of just how much life remains ahead. Harvest 28 September to 11 October.

Tasted blind as a vintage comparison at the Valandraud vertical, the 2000 Leoville-Las-Cases is a quite fabulous, magisterial Saint Julien that is only just beginning to flex its muscles. It has a very intense and beautifully defined bouquet with mineral rich blackberry and bilberry scents, outstanding focus and harmony, and very well-integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, impressive backbone and focus in situ. There is a touch of mint infusing the fruit here, superb tension with a touch of mulberry and Hoi Sin lingering on the finish that still feels backward and sinewy. What was remarkable was to observe the melioration in the glass, achieving wondrous energy and delineation with time, still improving after a couple of hours. Buy it, cellar it, drink it. Tasted December 2016.

A classic Las Cases with masses of mineral, floral and blueberry character. Full and chewy, with so much power. It’s just opening now.

Full, bright ruby. Superripe aromas of roasted currant, violet and black licorice. Powerful and highly aromatic in the mouth, with brooding black fruit, violet and chocolate flavors. A step up in acidity from the Clos du Marquis, giving the wine great vinosity and cut. Extremely long and aromatic on the finish, with big, chewy, thoroughly ripe tannins. 95(+?)

This wine has put on weight and, as impressive as it was from cask, it is even more brilliant from bottle. Only 35% of the crop made it into the 2000 Leoville Las Cases, a blend of 76.8% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.4% Merlot, and 8.8% Cabernet Franc. The wine is truly profound, with an opaque purple color and a tight but promising nose of vanilla, sweet cherry liqueur, black currants, and licorice in a dense, full-bodied, almost painfully rich, intense style with no hard edges. This seamless classic builds in the mouth, with a finish that lasts over 60 seconds. Still primary, yet extraordinarily pure, this compelling wine, which continues to build flavor intensity and exhibit additional layers of texture, is a tour de force in winemaking and certainly one of the great Leoville Las Cases. In another sense, it symbolizes / pays homage to proprietor Michel Delon, who passed away in 2000. Michel has been succeeded by his son, Jean-Hubert, another perfectionist. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2040.

Absolutely fantastic. This is one of the most exciting young reds I have tasted in a long, long time. It shows intense aromas of berries, currants and minerals, with hints of mint. Full-bodied and packed with fruit and tannins, its long finish is refined and silky. A benchmark for the vintage. Las Cases has always wanted to make first-growth quality in a top-notch vintage, and it certainly did in 2000. Best after 2012. 15,000 cases made.

Great purity of cassis and black cherry fruit dominates the aromatics of the medium to full-bodied, austere, tannic, concentrated, voluminous 2000 Leoville Las Cases. It is a classic Las Cases exhibiting subtle oak, and a palate that builds with intensity as the wine aerates. The tannin still overlays it, giving it a youthful, backward, unevolved personality. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2035.

A sleek, super-concentrated, pure Leoville-Las-Cases has once again been produced. Yields were approximately 47 hectoliters per hectare, and only 35% of the crop was utilized in the grand vin. This wine is dominated by its high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon (76.14%, with the balance being 14.40% Cabernet Franc and the rest Merlot). Opaque black/purple-colored, with a reticent but promising bouquet of creme de cassis, blackberry and cherry liqueur, vanilla, minerals, and spice box, this medium to full-bodied, rich 2000 explodes on the back of the palate with high tannin as well as zesty acidity. A backward vin de garde, it will require 8-10 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2040.
