Léoville Barton - Saint-Julien 1999

The Barton dynasty, a fascinating story

What makes the history of the Barton family so fascinating is how each generation has left its mark and added its stone to this exceptional heritage. Settled in Bordeaux since 1722, the Barton family is one of the only families left in the Médoc that is still at the head of its properties since the 1855 classification.

Lilian Barton-Sartorius, the worthy successor of her father, Anthony Barton, now manages the three estates: Château Léoville Barton (2nd Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Julien), Langoa Barton (3ème Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Julien) and Mauvesin Barton (Moulis en Médoc). Her children, Mélanie and Damien, representing the 10th generation, are involved in the development of the family properties, thus keeping this remarkable legacy alive.

Léoville Barton, the magic of Saint-Julien combined to the elegance of Barton

The Barton family's passion for wine is reflected in the elegance and consistency of Château Léoville Barton, 2nd Grand Cru Classé in 1855. Its 50-hectare vineyard is located on one of the most beautiful gravelly slopes in the Garonne region, facing the Gironde River, in the heart of the Saint Julien appellation in the Médoc. This precious and unique heritage transcends one grape variety, the Cabernet-Sauvignon, and gives the wine a signature like no other.

The 1999 Leoville Barton is deep brick in color. It sashays out with a gorgeous perfume of kirsch, dried roses, iron ore, and fragrant soil, followed by hints of cigar box, cinnamon stick, and graphite. The light-bodied palate is filled with an impressive amount of ripe black fruits and savory accents, supported by firm, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and minerally.

Dry tannin and a backward, austere, muscular, brooding personality characterize Leoville Barton's 1999. However, it is packed with grip, body, and depth. Give it 5-6 years of cellaring and hope the tannin melts away sufficiently for the fruit to come forward. It should last for two decades, but will it ever be balanced?

Black licorice and roasted coffee aromas. Medium- to full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long finish. Tight wine. Give it time. Solid Barton. Best after 2004. 19,165 cases made.

The vintage's lower acids give the 1999 Leoville-Barton a more forward character than normal. The color is a dense ruby/purple. The wine reveals fine body, a softer, friendlier, mainstream style, in addition to abundant weight and richness. Cedar, cassis, minerals, underbrush, and earth dominate both the aromatics and flavors. I suspect it will firm up after bottling. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2025. Readers seeking classic, muscular, extremely long-lived Bordeaux should always keep this outstanding classified growth in mind. It continues to sell for a price well below its intrinsic value.

Leoville-Barton's wines are consistently well-made, so it is not surprising that their 1999 is a muscular, serious, broodingly rich effort. An opaque ruby/purple color is accompanied by impressive aromas of cedar wood, black fruits, spice box, and loamy soil. Dense, chewy, and built to age, this unflattering yet potentially outstanding, full-bodied Leoville-Barton is one of the most concentrated and ageworthy wines of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2022.
