Larrivet Haut Brion rouge - Pessac-Léognan 2023

Larrivet Haut Brion, a new era for this iconic wine estate.

In 1987, the Gervoson family purchased Château Larrivet Haut Brion, an iconic wine estate in Pessac Leognan. At that time, the vineyard covered 17 hectares and the park surrounding the Château extended over 13 hectares. 35 years later, the family has succeeded in restoring not only the unity of the vineyard but also the prestige of this former "cru exceptionnel" from the Graves (Edition Ferret, 1898).

Today, the vines spread over 75 hectares including 61 hectares of red grape varieties. The 12-hectare park surrounding the Château has been preserved. It has become a haven of peace and biodiversity. The new technical team at the head of the estate includes Bruno Lemoine, Charlotte Mignon and François Godichon and performs very well. Here, every action is made to reveal the purest expression of the fruit: a precise viticulture, "Burgundy-style" vinifications and ageing containers testing (barrels, amphoras, wine globe...).

The 2023 vintage -"An exciting vintage for its brilliance."

Climatic conditions:

A very hot, humid spring favored strong growth, followed by an equally hot, humid summer and 2 heat waves at the end of August and beginning of September, which accelerated the start of harvesting.

Tasting notes:

On the nose: Lots of brightness, notes of crushed black fruit, licorice, slightly candied. Very dense.
On the palate: Full attack, powerful without being aggressive, ripe tannins. The aromatic range on the nose is repeated on the palate.

The 2023 Larrivet Haut-Brion is deep garnet-purple in color. Notes of red currant preserves, kirsch, and black raspberries jump from the glass, followed by hints of lavender, wild sage, and wet slate. The medium-bodied palate delivers bright, shimmery red berry flavors with a fine-grained texture and great tension, finishing long and fragrant. Impressive! The blend is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc, and 7% Merlot. The Merlot component was vinified with stems and aged in amphorae, while the remainder was aged in French oak barriques, all new.

Coming from a mix of sandy, gravelly soils in Pessac-Léognan, the 2023 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion offers beautiful, smoky currants, tobacco, violets, and gravelly earth-like aromatics, with some classic Graves character and complexity. Based on 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Merlot and aged 14-16 months in 50% new French oak with 35% in one-year-old barrels and 15% in terracotta jars for a portion of the Merlot, it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a round, layered mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's beautifully done and well worth seeking out and buying. I like it even today, yet it's going to shine with 4-5 years of bottle age and have two decades of longevity. Drink 2029-2045.

The palate is bright, fresh, and almost crisp, with sweet red berries and an earthy, slightly green-tinted finish. The wine is made from 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc, and 7% Merlot. Drink from 2028-2045.

The 2023 Larrivet Haut-Brion is terrific, just as it was en primeur. A wine of polish, nuance and delineation, it dazzles from start to finish. Crushed rocks, blood orange, mint and pomegranate soar from the glass. The 2023 exudes purity and nuance, along with a compelling mix of power and finesse.

The 2023 Larrivet Haut-Brion has quite an upfront and lively nose, a little oaky although the fruit should soak that up with bottle age. The palate is medium-bodied, with forthright tannins. It feels a bit pushed in the winery, a little overextracted toward the finish where it loses delineation and clarity, with powdered dark chocolate on the aftertaste.

A complex nose of tobacco, wet leaves, elderberries, thyme and eucalyptus. The medium- to full-bodied palate shows delineated dark fruit with a smoky, saline and savory mineral profile, leading to a focused, precise finish. A blend of 75% cabernet sauvignon, 20% cabernet franc and 5% merlot. Needs to soften, but drinkable now with some aeration. Drink or hold.

“Such beautiful aromas of blackberries, flowers, nettles and crushed stones follow through to a medium body with firm yet open tannins and a long and crunchy finish. Needs three or four years to come together but very well-constructed. 61% cabernet sauvignon, 21% cabernet franc, 18% merlot. 5% whole- brunch fermentation. Drink after 2029"

I continue to love this estate, and their 2023 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion looks to be terrific. Sporting a deep ruby/purple hue as well as gorgeous aromatics of cassis, black raspberries, scorched earth, graphite, and smoky tobacco, it’s medium-bodied, beautifully pure, and flawlessly balanced, with integrated acidity and tannins. It's going to need just a few years of bottle age and evolve for 15 years or more. Tasted twice. The 2023 is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Merlot, aging in 92% new barrels and 8% in amphora.

Elegant, refined, soft, and focused, the medium-bodied wine offers complexity, vibrancy, soft-textured, sweet, ripe, red fruits and a floral, and smoky charm onthe mid-palate, that carries through to the finish. The finish is loaded with sweet, red pit fruits, with chocolate-mint coming in at the end of the refined finish. The wine is made from 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc, and 7% Merlot. Drink from 2026-2045. 92-94 Pts.

Balanced delivery of intense black fruits, clear tannic frame, and carefully judged extractions, emphasis a floral character alongside the smoked liqourice root and cedar spice. Starting an ambitious eco-forestry programme at this estate, owned by the Gervoson family since 1987. 92% aged in a mix of new oak and one year old barrels, the rest in a mix of other containers.

A wine of stature and pure breeding, the 2023 Larrivet Haut-Brion is superb. Its vertical energy is compelling right out of the gate. Dark red-toned fruit, gravel, incense, licorice, spice, rose petal and tobacco build effortlessly in a deep, layered Pessac-Léognan that hits all the right notes. The blend is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc and 7% Merlot, done with a touch of stem inclusion and aged in 92% French oak and 8% amphora. Superb. Tasted three times.

Dark garnet, purple reflections, brightening on the edge. Delicate woody savouri- ness, vanilla, preserved cherries, hints of figs. Medium body, red berryish nuances, subtle tannins, fresh acidity, somewhat broad in the finish, lemony aftertaste.

The 2023 Larrivet Haut-Brion bursts with aromas of cassis, coniferous forest, mulberries, orange zest and iris, followed by a medium to full-bodied, seamless and layered palate with bright acids and a succulent core of fruit framed by powdery tannins. This year, Bruno Lemoine and his team employed whole-bunch fermentation for their Cabernet Franc, yielding excellent results. This charming, well-executed Pessac-Léognan is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and the remainder Merlot (notably reduced due to mildew).
