Larrivet Haut Brion rouge - Pessac-Léognan 2022

Larrivet Haut Brion, a new era for this iconic wine estate.

In 1987, the Gervoson family purchased Château Larrivet Haut Brion, an iconic wine estate in Pessac Leognan. At that time, the vineyard covered 17 hectares and the park surrounding the Château extended over 13 hectares. 35 years later, the family has succeeded in restoring not only the unity of the vineyard but also the prestige of this former "cru exceptionnel" from the Graves (Edition Ferret, 1898).

Today, the vines spread over 75 hectares including 61 hectares of red grape varieties. The 12-hectare park surrounding the Château has been preserved. It has become a haven of peace and biodiversity. The new technical team at the head of the estate includes Bruno Lemoine, Charlotte Mignon and François Godichon and performs very well. Here, every action is made to reveal the purest expression of the fruit: a precise viticulture, "Burgundy-style" vinifications and ageing containers testing (barrels, amphoras, wine globe...).

Tasting notes

Deep, dark colour. The nose is marked by aromas of liquorice and mint which blend harmoniously with notes of black fruit.
On the palate, the tannins are present and silky, giving a velvety and dense texture, and the finish is persistent with a good length, offering all the dynamism of the wine.

After tasting a series of Pessac-Léognan wines, encountering the 2022 vintage of Château Larrivet Haut-Brion felt like discovering a treasure in the dense forest. The whole-cluster fermentation imparted rich aromas of black tea, longan, sour jujube, and dried rose petals, each breath drawing you into a scene of joyful childhood playfulness. The palate is smooth and sweet, with a tight, delicate finish. Silky tannins caress the face, allowing everyone who tastes this wine to bask in joy and happiness.

Lovely aromatics here, dives straight in to a charming, fruit-filled glass, nothing too concentrated in colour or on the nose, still with plenty of personality. Edge of vanilla bean smoke on the nose, there is a sweetness here, raspberry puree, fragrant lemongrass, violet and cherry pit. Enjoyable, fresh acidities on the finish. Dominant Cabernet, with over 80% between Sauvignon and Franc, and a generous for the vintage 40hl/h yield. 15% whole cluster, aged in a mix of amphora, new barrels and one year old barrels. Tasted twice.

Confirming my expectations, the 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion is one of the best wines ever produced at this estate. Revealing a complex, vibrant bouquet of cassis, lilac, iris, mulberries, spices and menthol complemented by barely noticeable oak, it's medium to full-bodied and layered with a seamless, pure texture and a fleshy core of fruit perfectly framed by velvety tannins and bright acids. The Cabernet Franc contributes a floral finish, while the Cabernet Sauvignon adds a balanced structure. It should age gracefully.

The 2022 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion checks in as 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc, and 18% Merlot that spent 16 months in barrel. Its deep ruby/purple hue is followed by a beautifully perfumed, medium to full-bodied, elegant 2022 that has red, blue, and some black fruits, a lifted, floral perfume of incense, smoky tobacco, and blood orange, fine, polished tannins, and a great finish. It's beautifully done, and while it's already accessible, it should age beautifully for two decades.

2027- 2047 95/100

The 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion never engages on the nose as I would like. The nose contains brambly red fruit and soy aromas of moderate complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. It has moderate depth, though it's missing a little grip on the finish that shows quite a bit of sucrosity. Perhaps this is an early-drinking charmer, but it could have been more.

Such beautiful aromas of blackberries, flowers, nettles and crushed stones follow through to a medium body with firm yet open tannins and a long and crunchy finish. Needs three or four years to come together but very well-constructed. 61% cabernet sauvignon, 21% cabernet franc and 18% merlot. 5% whole-bunch fermentation. Drink after 2029.

The 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion is dense, powerful and explosive. Black cherry, plum, new leather, licorice and mocha are amplified in this dramatic, deeply resonant wine. Gorgeous.

Nicely aromatic on the nose, fresh black fruits and perfumed elements. Really juicy and supple with bite to the blue fruits and a grape skin texture that is nicely filling and not harsh or austere. Acidity is there but cool and fresh so you get a liveliness but it's controlled and not sharp. A complete wine with lots going on. Beautiful depth and persistence, I like the mouthfilling nature with energy and focus. Clean and precise, characterful and supremely enjoyable. Harvest 19 September - 10 October. Ageing 14-16 months. 80% barrels, 20% large barrels. Derenoncourt consultants.

When I discovered Château Larrivet Haut-Brion 2022 after tasting a variety of Pessac-Léognan wines, it felt much like unearthing a precious gem hidden within a forest. The whole-bunch fermentation process bestowed captivating notes of black tea, longan, sour dates, and dried roses. Each breath sends me to a whimsical scene of joyous children at play. The wine offers a velvety and sweet entry, followed by a refined, intricate mid-palate. Its gentle, silky tannins tenderly embraced my cheeks, bathing me in a wave of happiness.

The 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion was tasted on two occasions. The first sample was a bit suspect, intimating a little over-ripeness. A second showing was much better. Dark berry fruit and tertiary scents unwind on the nose and draw you in, nothing ambitious but neatly delineated. The palate sashays along with a firm but fine lattice of tannins and commendable balance. It evokes the sense of Pessac-Léognan on its finish that nicks the best from Left and Right Banks. Call me smitten.

Medium deep crimson. Pure red cherry, starwberry, redcurrant aromas with touch of dark chocolate. Attractive buoyant style with ample redcurrant, strawberry, cassis flavours, fine grainy tannins and well integrated savoury oak. Finishes firm and tight with linear freshness. (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc 30% new oak)

Luscious ripe apricot and white pear fruits, velvety texture, with plenty of concentration and depth. A gourmet white that has appeal but needs more lift on the finish, as is so often the case in this vintage. 70% new oak, 30% wooden casks, harvest August 26 to 29.

Charmeur.

I loved the 2022 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion, and I wouldn't be surprised to see this check in near the 2020, although it's in a riper, more sexy style. Cassis, plums, chocolate, and earthy notes all emerge from this full-bodied Graves that has an expansive, layered mouthfeel, ripe, velvety tannins, and solid mid-palate density. It's going to benefit from just a few years of bottle age. The blend is 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Merlot, resting in 50% new oak, with a small amount in amphora.

The 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion is bold, punchy and also quite exotic, because of the presence of Cabernet Franc. Succulent red cherry fruit, dried herbs, menthol, licorice and rose petal lend notable complexity with plenty of Franc perfume built into the layered, wonderfully expressive finish. Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion Rouge gallops out of the glass with powerful notes of blackcurrant pastilles, juicy blueberries, and blackberry preserves, leading to an undercurrent of clove oil, dark chocolate, and roses. The medium to full-bodied palate has a solid frame of fine-grained tannins and plenty of freshness to support the generous black fruits, finishing long and fragrant. Nicely done!

Smoked, cherries, strawberry, smoked meats, spearmint, and cigar smoke create the nose. The wine is medium-bodied, elegant, soft, silky and refined. The finish is loaded with sweet, red pit fruits, with chocolate-mint coming in at the end of the refined finish. The wine is made from 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc and 18% Merlot. 14% ABV, 3.71 pH. Yields were 40 hectoliters. 38% of the harvest was placed into the Grand Vin. Picking took place September 6 - September 28. It is interesting to note that Larrivet was the first known wine of the 2022 futures campaign to be offered, and it was priced at a discount to 2021! Drink from 2026-2045.

The 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion offers up aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry, raspberry, violet, orange zest, iris and ripe plums, followed by a medium to full-bodied palate that's supple, seamless and elegant, its succulent core of fruit framed by velvety tannins, concluding with a floral finish. A blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot and 21% Cabernet Franc—the most significant portion of this grape variety ever used at this estate run by Bruno Lemoine—this is one of the most interesting wines that this estate has produced in recent years. It matured in 15% amphorae, 50% new barrels and the balance in tanks.
