Larmande - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2016

The estate

Château Larmande a historical property of Saint-Emilion. The town's archives record its existence since 1585.  This Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé since 1952, is owned by AG2R LA MONDIALE insurance group since 1990.

The 22-hectare vineyard, located on the North side of Saint-Emilion, is a true mosaic of terroirs, including clay-limestone soils, ancient sands, and clay-siliceous soils.

The 2016 Larmande has a lively, generous bouquet featuring a mélange of black and red fruit, cedar and subtle mint aromas; the oak is nicely integrated here. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannins, a slightly grainy texture, good backbone and a fine seam of acidity, and there is real delineation and poise on the finish. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Tasted blind. Heady spicy nose. Thick, sweet and creamy. Lots of attention to texture here. But just a tad pinched on the end. Is it all smoke and mirrors? Just not very refreshing on the end. A bit furry. Drink 2024-2037

2022-2036 91/100

I loved the 2016 Château Larmande, a concentrated, medium to full-bodied Saint-Emilion made from 77% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, all brought up in 60% new French oak. It has impressive ripeness as well as notes of black cherries, mulberries, and cassis intermixed with hints of chocolate, spice, and graphite. Textured, layered, and expansive on the palate, it’s a ripe, pleasure-bent beauty that’s going to drink nicely for 15 years or more.

Just a hint of bitter chocolate coats the fresh black-fruit character in this generous St.-Emilion. Polished tannins carry the long finish. A blend of 65 per cent merlot, 30 per cent cabernet franc and five per cent cabernet sauvignon.

The 2016 Larmande was tasted twice, once coming across a little overdone, while another bottle in Bordeaux demonstrated more restraint and precision. The nose is tertiary in style, with touches of pencil box. The palate is concentrated on the entry, offering layers of black fruit infused with graphite and sea salt. Hints of licorice appear toward the cohesive finish. This is very promising.

Owned by La Mondiale insurance (as with Château Soutard and Grand Faurie la Rose), this has a silky texture with rich, fleshy fruit. It has a good balance of fruit, tannin and acidity, with a clear shape and form to the body of this thoroughly enjoyable wine. 60% new oak. 45hl/ha yield. 70% of the harvest went into the grand vin in 2016.

Fruit savoureux, bel élevage, tannin mûr, bel équilibre. Du potentiel.

The 2016 Larmande has a clean and pure bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, more detailed and focused than some of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, well judged acidity, harmonious and focused with a long, persistent and very pure finish. This is a lovely Larmande that is going to give a lot of pleasure.

Sweet red cherry and raspberry notes give the 2016 Larmade its juicy, up-front personality. This straightforward, tasty Saint-Émilion is a good choice for drinking now and over the next few years.

(68 Merlot, 27 Cabernet Franc, 5 Cabernet Sauvignon) | 60% new oak Plush, dark and deep, this is a smart Larmande with more concentration than I have seen before. With controlled oak and nice depth, this is a good bet for some real fun in the future. 17.5+

Rich, almost burnt aromas. Black fruit compote and an unappetisingly sweet palate entry. Leathery tannins and really quite painful chewiness on the end. An uncomfortable whole. Another saliva-sucker.

arrel Sample. This juicy wine offers notes of spice on the nose and mouth, as well as firm tannins and a generous character on the palate. It is solidly structured, though the ripe fruit flavors offers some cushion.

Firm and silky with a pretty core of fruit and ripe tannins. Linear and focused. Bright. Very attractive.
