Langoa Barton - Saint-Julien 2018

The Barton dynasty, a fascinating story

What makes the history of the Barton family so fascinating is how each generation has left its mark and added its stone to this exceptional heritage. Settled in Bordeaux since 1722, the Barton family is one of the only families left in the Médoc that is still at the head of its properties since the 1855 classification.

Lilian Barton-Sartorius, the worthy successor of her father, Anthony Barton, now manages the three estates: Château Léoville Barton (2nd Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Julien), Langoa Barton (3ème Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Julien) and Mauvesin Barton (Moulis en Médoc). Her children, Mélanie and Damien, representing the 10th generation, are involved in the development of the family properties, thus keeping this remarkable legacy alive.

Château Langoa Barton, the first wine estate of the family

Saint Julien is where the roots and the heart of the Barton spirit can be felt.
The love story between the appellation and the Barton family began in 1821 when Hugh Barton purchased Château Langoa Barton. Since then, generation upon generation, the Barton family has been writting the chapters of this 3rd Grand Cru Classé in 1855.

The vines that make up the Château Langoa Barton terroir overlook the river and thus benefit from the natural protection of this thermal regulator. The mild temperatures due to this proximity imply early ripening, which is often a sign of good quality. The 20 hectares (49 acres) of Château Langoa Barton are planted on a magnificent outcrop of quaternary gravel lying on clay subsoil. This terroir gives pride of place to Cabernet-Sauvignon, along with Merlot and Cabernet franc.

The 2018 Langoa Barton is succulent and racy right out of the gate. Inky red fruit, sweet floral notes, cedar and spice all mesh together effortlessly. This mid-weight, pliant Saint-Julien is every bit as seductive as it was from barrel.

The 2018 Langoa Barton has a deep garnet-purple color and notions of ripe blackcurrants, fresh blackberries and kirsch with touches of bouquet garni, cedar chest and pencil lead plus a hint of crushed rocks. The medium-bodied palate is elegantly styled and refreshing with bright, red fruit and herbal sparks lifting the black fruit and an approachable, chewy texture, finishing savory.

Made by the stellar team at Léoville Barton and a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Château Langoa Barton sports a deep ruby/purple hue to go with a charming, medium to full-bodied, velvety-textured 2018 with terrific notes of red, blue, and black fruits as well as spice box, dried flowers, and a touch lead pencil. It has surprising up-front appeal, with ripe, velvety tannins and nicely integrated acidity, and it's going to shine with just 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for 20+.

Cassis, chocolate mint, flowers and tobacco leaf aromas is where the wine starts. But it is on the full-bodied palate with all of its chewy, crisp, fresh, vibrant layers of bright, spicy currants that you get the full character here. Youthful and tannic as expected, allow this at least a decade of aging before pulling a cork. The wine blends 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc.

The 2018 Langoa Barton was picked September 21–24 for the Merlot and September 29–October 6 for the Cabernet, then matured in 60% new oak. It remains opulent and high-toned on the nose, retaining those overt blueberry and cassis scents that I remarked upon in barrel. The palate is sweet and charming, though for me it needs a little more grip and backbone on the finish. This is a Langoa-Barton that might be just a little too willing to please at this early juncture, which leaves me speculating what it has in reserve for long-term cellaring.

Ripe and focused, with a lovely core of steeped plum, fig and cassis notes laced liberally with graphite and applewood. A violet note chimes bright on the finish. Absolutely rock solid. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2023 through 2036. 7,800 cases made. –JM

Dunkles Rubingranat, violette Reflexe, zarte Randaufhellung. Feinwürzig unterlegtes schwarzes Beerenkonfit, dunkle Kirschenfrucht, etwas Nougat, kandierte Orangenzesten.

Currants, cloves, graphite and cigar box on the nose. Some pine and citrus zest, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, tight-grained tannins. Structured and vivid with plenty of tension. Lovely sweet fruit at the finish. Try from 2025.

Beautifully textured and rich in black-currant flavors and tannins, this is a generous wine. The fruits and the dusty tannins partner each other well giving structure, concentration, a sense of poise and final freshness. Drink this wine from 2026.

The 2018 Langoa Barton was picked from 21 to 24 September for the Merlot and 29 September to 6 October for the Cabernet, then matured in 60% new oak. It has a high-toned and voluptuous bouquet with blueberry, crème de cassis and pressed violet aromas. It is very Margaux-like in style. The palate is very smooth and sensual, the multi-layered black and blue fruit with a saline undercurrent. It is floral on the finish, very seductive, but, maybe, I might have a slight preference for the 2017.

I was really impressed with the 2018 Langoa Barton. Fresh, floral and silky, with tremendous fruit purity, the 2018 is delicate and understated to the core. Langoa is always one of the most gracious wines of Saint-Julien. The 2018 has an extra kick of textural resonance that makes it incredibly appealing and delicious. The 2018 is an especially fine Langoa Barton. Tasted two times.

Bravo.

Black core. Intense, small-berried wild black fruits. A very nice combination of dark fruit and savoury black olive. Firm, dense and compact in tannin structure but not tough or drying, just very tannic. The second time I tasted this it seemed more supple. Even with these obvious tannins, there's freshness on the very end. Drink 2027-2037.

Crème de cassis, tobacco leaf, cedar wood and spice notes on the nose and a full-bodied, ripe, firm, fresh blast of zesty, crunchy, red fruits with a whiff of cocoa on the palate. This is very classic in nature with a strict side so you'll need to age this for at least a decade. The blend consists of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, reaching 13.85% alcohol.

The deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Langoa Barton is slightly shy at this nascent stage, revealing wonderfully pure, warm red and black currant scents with nuances of blueberry preserves, chocolate mint, smoked meat and a waft of bouquet garni. Full-bodied, rich and sporting a lot of vibrant, juicy fruit in the mouth, it has firm, rounded tannins and a lively backbone lifting the fruit to a good, long finish.

Des notes d'épices, de graphite pour un bouquet élégant et ferme. La bouche ne s'exprime pas forcément dans la densité mais possède de beaux tanins pleins et élégants. Aérien en finale avec une petite pointe moka.

This wine has generous tannins that are matched by a blackberry flavor. It has the structure and concentration that will allow the wine to age.

There’s real freshness to the crushed-raspberry and blueberry character of this young red. Medium-to full-bodied and zingy with energetic tannins. Crisp finish. Lovely purity of fruit to this.

This has the ripe, intense, racy feel of the vintage, with cassis, plum and blueberry compote flavors, carried by a long graphite spine. A textbook 2018 and a textbook St.-Julien.
