La Lagune (BIO-ORGANIC) - Haut-Médoc 2023

La Lagune, a superb terroir revealed through a natural approach

Owned by the Frey family since 2000, Château La Lagune is a Third Growth classified in 1855. The estate is located 10 km north of Bordeaux. Its 81 hectares of vines rest on a very fine gravelly ridge.

Here, it is believed that the vineyard is part of a global ecosystem where each element plays a crucial role. Thus, the teams, led by Caroline Frey, have implemented virtuous practices to preserve this superb terroir and the health of the men and women who work there: the vineyard has been certified organic since late 2016 and has obtained Biodyvin certification for its biodynamic practices. This natural and plot by plot approach plays a fundamental role in the quality of the wines. It allows the fruit to draw from the soil all the complexity and finesse of the terroir, which is then expressed through gentle and precise vinification techniques.

The 2023 Vintage:

The 2023 vintage marks two decades of Caroline Fry's management at Château La Lagune vineyard. Located on a terroir of deep gravel, this estate has been producing elegant and balanced wines for four centuries, with a consistency over time that makes it a reference in the region.

Tasting notes:

On the nose, the 2023 vintage presents delicate notes of strawberry and hints of menthol that recall the freshness of Cabernet Sauvignon, the true identity of Château La Lagune wine. The finish remains marked by the purity of the tannins, giving an elegant and balanced impression to this vintage.

The 2023 La Lagune, incidentally a wine that for some unfathomable reason I did not taste from barrel, contains no Petit Verdot this year as Caroline Frey, who has since stood down from running the estate, found it did not contain the finesse she was looking for. It has an attractive bouquet with blackberry, bilberry and light iodine scents that unfold nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with powdery tannins. Gentle grip, quite linear and certainly saline, it has a briny finish that just needs a touch more persistence as it feels a bit hard on the landing. Time will soften that up. Pleasant black pepper notes mixed with bay leaf linger on the aftertaste. Fine, but give this three years in bottle.

A linear and refined La Lagune with nutmeg, cedar, spice and berry aromas and hints of plums, bark and dried flowers. Medium-bodied with firm tannins and a lightly chewy finish. The tannins stay polished and precise. 65% cabernet sauvignon and 35% merlot. From organically grown grapes. Needs three or four years to soften and come together. Try after 2028.

This hidden gem of a Haut-Médoc is always worth checking out. The 2023 Château La Lagune reveals a ruby/purple hue as well as classic notes of red and black currants, leafy tobacco, cedary spice, and smoke. It's balanced, medium-bodied, has ample mid-palate depth, and ripe, integrated tannins. It plays in the fresh, lively style of the vintage yet brings beautiful fruit and depth.

Indian spice, flowers, smoke, red pit fruits, and a drop of espresso fill the complex nose. The medium-bodied, palate is elegant, refined, and silky, with lift, and sweetness to the red berries with a touch of chocolate in the end note that fills things out. Drink from 2027-2045. 92-94 Pts.

Concentrated spiced plum, billowing red and white roses fragrance, opening to a confident tannic architecture, and an expansive but controlled delivery of textured autumnal fruit. Rose stems and grippy tannnins suggest full ripeness was challenging, but this has character and depth, and lift through the palate. Caroline Frey owner, 30hl/ha yields.

The 2023 La Lagune is a serious wine, but it is also quite backward. Dark red cherry, plum, spice, leather and dried herbs open with some coaxing. The 2023 is going to need time to come together. Its aromatic intensity and overall persistence suggest it has a bright future. Tasted two times.

Dark ruby colour, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. Fresh cherries, fine cassis, inviting wild berries, attractive bouquet. Juicy, elegant, ripe cherry fruit, fine fruitiness, round tannins, good freshness, remains persistent, mineral, with good prospects.

La Lagune 2023 has a deep garnet-purple color. It pops from the glass with notes of fresh, juicy plums, black cherries, and redcurrants, leading to hints of wild thyme, black olives, and damp soil. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers just enough black fruit and savory flavors, with a chewy texture and a minerally finish.

The 2023 La Lagune, a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, reveals bright aromas of dark wild berries, flowers, cassis and spices. Medium-bodied, supple and enveloping, with a perfectly balanced mid-palate, it’s elegant and charming with an ethereal, fruity finish. This is an excellent rendition of this terroir.

A subtle yet plush La Lagune with black olives, blackberries and hints of chocolate and hazelnut. Medium body with fine, polished tannins and a savory finish. There's a crunchy feel to it and it’s layered and deep at the end. 65% cabernet sauvignon and 35% merlot. No petit verdot.
