Lagrange - Saint-Julien 2023

Château Lagrange, the pursuit of excellence

Four centuries of Medoc history along with the uncompromising quality goals shared with the Japanese owners - Suntury Group - since 1983 have inspired Château Lagrange, 3rd Grand Cru Classé in 1855.

Located on two Günzian gravel mounds, the Lagrange vineyard stretches across 118 hectares in a single plot within the Saint-Julien appellation. Château Lagrange has managed to combine tradition and embrace innovation to express, with the utmost precision, its unchanged terroir since 1855 and produce a powerful, elegant, and harmonious wine each year.

The 2023 Vintage:

Climatic conditions:

In 2023, most of the rain was outside the vine growth period, replenishing the soil's water reserves. The season was early and warm, leading to perfect maturity of the grapes. The technical teams managed to deal with the difficulties of June to prepare for the summer season and the harvest. Harvesting went serenely, with a generous harvest and grapes in perfect health.

Tasting notes:

On the nose, fresh fruit notes dominate, with blackcurrant, morello cherry and liquorice. The press wines, which are essential to making a Grand Vin, were sumptuous, and give the wine a third dimension that will carry it effortlessly through the ages. Strict selection, which resulted in only 42% of Chateau Lagrange being produced, has allowed us to guarantee irreproachable quality.

The 2023 Lagrange was bottled at the end of June. It is understated on the nose, but it needs only two or three minutes before it reveals attractive blackberry, wild hedgerow, cedar wood and sous-bois scents. Very typical Saint-Julien style. The palate is well balanced with fine, chiselled tannins. Just the right amount of acidity keeps this on its toes, quite open and welcoming already, therefore I suspect that this will require only a couple of years in bottle before it's ready for action.

Very good, showing defined minerals and just a touch of sweet spices to the vibrant red and black cherries. Quite bright and precise, with fine, chalky tannins and a long but pristine finish. Such poise, transparency and purity of fruit. Tense, tactile and tightly knit. Certainly nothing heavy here. A blend of 84% cabernet sauvignon and 16% merlot. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Lagrange is bright, punchy and full of character. Red-toned fruit, blood orange, spice, menthol, licorice and rose petal lend exuberance and freshness to this mid-weight Saint-Julien. Readers will find a wine of total class and sophistication. In a word: terrific. Tasted two times.

I was able to taste the 2023 Château Lagrange on two separate occasions, and it showed beautifully both times. Deep ruby/purple-hued with a gorgeous yet reserved perfume of cassis, graphite, violets, and spicy oak, it hits the palate with a medium to full-bodied, ultra-pure, seamless mouthfeel that carries flawlessly integrated tannins and acidity. It plays in the fresher, elegant style of the vintage yet has so much to love with its purity, balance, and elegance.

Black cherries, black currants, flowers, and mint blend perfectly in the nose, and on the medium-bodied, fresh, energetic, bright, chewy palate. Give this a few years in the bottle, and it is going to be a very good wine to drink over the next few decades. Starting with the 2016 vintage, Lagrange has been on a hot streak! The wine is produced from 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 16% Merlot. Drink from 2029-2055. 91-93 Pts.

This is very much in the character of Lagrange over the past few years, showing precision and confidence in its construction, finessed and elegant, with St Julien balance and reserved power. Will absolutely deliver for fans of classical Left Bank Bordeaux with its slate tannins, savoury Cabernet black and blue fruits, fresh leaf tea, tobacco, raspberry leaf, spiced sage and lusicous mouthwatering signoff. 51hl/ha yield.

The 2023 Lagrange contains no Petit Verdot this year. Matured in 60% new oak, the aromatics demand a bit of coaxing in the glass, eventually revealing blackberry and cedar aromas and just a touch of graphite, quite strict and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with very pliant tannins on the entry, ensuring that this will be an approachable Lagrange. Pure-fruited and gently grippy, there is admirable depth to this Saint-Julien, revealing just a hint of brine toward the saline finish. This is a "solid" wine, if perhaps without the flair of the 2022. It will require four or five years in bottle but should drink well for the next 20 years or more.

Dark ruby, deep core, purple reflections, subtle brightening on the rim. Delicately leafy and savoury blackberry fruit, black cherries, fresh orange zest, tobacco nuanc- es. Substantial and fruity texture, ripe plums, some nougat, spicy overall impression, shows length and certain ageing potential.

A blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Merlot, the 2023 Lagrange offers up aromas of dark berries, plums and cherries mingled with hints of pencil shavings and violets. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, with good depth, supple tannins and a suave, vibrant profile, it's attractively seamless and complete.

This is tight but has creamy, round tannins and a juicy character. Blackberries, chocolate and spices on the medium-bodied palate. Chewy and polished.
